I had been reading some book before trying it out, this short video is very helpful indeed. With no nordic walkers miles around, but me, and no instructors, how else I could know that I 'did it right... Enjoy your walking outdoors!

I just bought some poles for walking as I have a lot of trouble with my balance due to illness. I've fallen quite a few times so I'm hoping this will strengthen my body and get some outdoor exercise at the same time. Thanks for sharing this:-)

This exercise is very good for your upper body strength and helps anyone who has has got back problems or neck problems (following a slipped disc) With "Nordic Walking" as we call it over here you also put 30% less on your joints as opposed to normal walking and you use a lot more muscles when you do a proper workout with the right technique and long steps. It looks a bit odd for some people but it with a lot of things, you either love or leave it.

Very helpful. I wish I'd seen this many years ago, but being an avid hiker and always trying to perfect my hiking technique, I pretty much arrived at the same technique as described here through trial & error. Those hand loops look superior to anything I've seen. Thanks for the instruction.

Nice introduction! Now, as soon as you're comfortable with NW, go seek out your local group of IVV walkers, and introduce them to NW (highly likely they've never seen it before, but they'll all be interested!) James Hardiman, The Happy Walker (who lost 100lbs while Nordic Walking).

At the beginning people laughed at the first cars too.

And I laugh at likening the invention of the automobile to the invention of the nordic walkin pole.

Other instructors say that you should put your hand through the loop of the handstrap from the bottom up through the strap... that way, if you fall, the pole falls away from your hand and you don't break your thumb over the pole! The technique is I think from what I ve seen other instructors wrong. Body should 'not be totally upright slightly forward. Let stride longer and hands releasing backwards as pole goes back.

Those who refuse Nordic Pole Walking are overweight, using canes, and walkers. They think I've got a loose screw somewhere when they see me out walking. I'm not overweight, or using devices in order to stay upright. I also practice yoga, weight training, hike, and cycle (10 spd). So, who's laughing now?

then the best way is to drive your car (take a bus) to the other town, place, city and start nordic walking there, where you probably won't meet your friends. Or go to some park, forest and walk there. After few lessons of walking you find out how great it is even for young folks. And you sure realize others are idiots when they don't do it.

Tell people who tease you that your major is in common sense and mathematics. With Nordic Walking, you burn 20% more calories than walking and use 90% of your muscles. You will be doing this in your 90s - not like the ex-runners with blown knees pushing around walkers after their knee replacement surgery. - Michael

Amazing how swinging your arms when you go for a walk can be made into a michandizable, franchizable industry?
    Marketing at it's best.

Maybe in the states but you haven’t bothered to do any research into the method, have you.? Nordic Walking originated in Scandinavia, as an answer to professional skiers looking for some way to exercise when not on snow. It was NOT a marketing opportunity. It is a system whereby you not only exercise the lower body as in plain walking, but engaging the core muscles and the arms, shoulders and back muscles. Since proving so successful for skiers, the system has been taken up by physiotherapists for people convalescing after skeletal trauma and more interesting by those working in the field of neurological medicine and therapy, where this has proven to be incredibly helpful for recovering patients. It has only the. Been taken up by people walking for pleasure/ exercise . Here in the UK it is promoted by local councils to encourage people who need to get some movement into their lives by joining community walking groups. Nordic poles give support to those who need it and enable people to walk longer and faster. Please think carefully before making cynical comments about things you really know very little about. You’re welcome.

i'm all in favour of any form of excercise, long as it gets you up & going, but i'm sorry, i really cannot think of any other activity that makes you look more of a bell-end - they've banned them from my local park as the abuse and mockery they got was getting out of hand

Probably more to do with idiots walking in packs, not looking where their feet and sticks are going because they are so concerned with their superior posture, and hitting children or tripping up joggers because they take up the surface area of a small car on the pavement..

Are you serious? What town do you live in that wpuld ban this exercise to please the ignorant constituents? I would like to avoid living in a place like that. They take away the liberties of people to satisfy the ignorance of the masses.. Wow!
