I think Charlie (Mo1st Cr1tikal) said it perfectly when pointing out that “Actiblizzard wanting to hire more women” sounds more like a threat than a promise to do better
At this length of persistent bad news and horror stories. I'll no doubt say by X years time, HR horror be damned. It'd no doubt become impossible for ActiBliz to hire any 'more' women... Especially, women or anyone 'different' from the noun who'd rather dodge being abused in the first place. Or at least, those who are a bit more 'woke' than naívely blind.
The day Sterling stops talking about abuse in the games industry is a day I'll be really happy, ONLY because it means real change has happened to stop the abuse and I trust Sterling's judgement on that.
The problem is I don't think it's ever going to go away. Even the companies that seem to not have a culture of rampant abuse of their employees (that we know of) still have rampant abuse towards their customers. EA with lootboxes. Microsoft pushing hard on DLC. Sony with exclusive content. Nintendo with amiibo and a lack of diversity in Smash. The video game industry is literally Hydra. Kill one head, many take its place.
@@Henshingod But the whole point is the hydra myth is to teach people to come up with an alternative solution to their problems. If it comes back stronger every time it's killed... then don't kill it. We need to starve it until it learns some humility.
@@danielgehring7437 Also the hydra DOES die, you just have to kill it hard enough. Right now we are in the stage of "Boy, alot of people are sure pro-"Hydra continues to eat people.", maybe we should do something besides send the hydra a firmly worded letter?"
Some people need to be honest: They don't just want JSS to stop talking about the abuse; they want the _people who are being abused_ to shut up about it. "I just want my toys and I don't care who gets hurt making them."
Exactly this. I can't count the number of times I've heard "I've got my own problems to worry about, I don't have time to care what happens in someone else's workplace." Usually said after making time to defend a multi-billion dollar corporation.
Worse, they want them to shut up and keep taking it, and just get back to work on their precious toys. Truly psychopathic levels of entitlement and apathy.
I made the mistake of looking at some comments on a post that PC Gamer published about Jennifer Oneal (The CEO that recently resigned due to the obvious pay gap), and just... wow. I mean I knew gamers were horrible people but that was beyond horrible, they were saying exactly what you just mentioned, that the big company should punish employees for walking out and make an example out of them. And that was just one of the many things I saw, these people truly are manchildren who want their toys no matter what.
@@bravo075 Then they'll complain about the quality of their games and never put two and two together that it could be tied to the working conditions of the people making them.

Remember when they said "Well he wasn't aware of the abuse" and we responded by pointing out that has to mean one of two things: Either he's lying and complicit, or telling the truth and therefore incompetent. And either way means he shouldn't be in control a fucking houseplant, much less a company, and especially not PAID to do so that badly. Oh look it was one of those two just like we all said it was.
Spot on comment. Not being aware at the top level doesn't excuse an executive from being wilfully ignorant. Being aware and not doing anything about it, then releasing a statement confirming that he was unaware of said abuse does nothing to instil any confidence in anyone that he's effective in the position (doubling down on the angle of not being aware of abuse rather than admitting that it exists and is difficult to handle would be more honest but I appreciate I'm expecting some humanity where there is very little).
Being aware of everything that is happening in your company is literally the job of a CEO. Kotick using "I dunno" as an excuse should have been grounds for dismissal for not doing his goddamn job!
As someone who works in this industry: Please don't stop talking about it. The only way things change is if people keep talking about it and hold those companies responsible. I haven't played any of their games in years and as much as it pains me I am not going to give money to those people again. Please don't stop talking about it. We owe it to the people who died. To the people who got traumatised. To the people who still work there and are afraid.
The only people complaining about it still being talked about are the ones who are complicit, whether passively or actively, in the same kind of hateful and abusive behavior.

I would like to see a game which has a single line of code which was programmed by Kotick, or Android Wilson. Both are CEOs of gaming companies, which makes video games, yet their CEOs do not know how to code even a simple linear game. So how can CEOs of video gaming companies "do the most" for a video game company, if they cannot make a video game? Furthermore, has anybody received an Amazon package delivered by or picked by Bezos? No?
Because it protects the stock price, and thus, the Almighty Line of the Bull God. And if the past two years have taught us anything about the Capitalist hellscape we inhabit, it's that anyone and everyone outside the Capital class is expendable if it means that The Line doesn't go down.

I'm pretty sure "unsubing" is the weakest threat/argument that can be made against the channel. A) The channel was a success LONG before it reached it's current size, and B) people that get pissed enough to unsub aren't spreading your message anyways... you know: they are literally useless to your cause.
Thing is, the people whining about it don't seem to understand that even if they were 100% selfish and didn't care one bit about the devs and other people being abused, that it'd be in their own interest that the gaming industry gets better and has cancerous tumours like Bobby Kotick cut out from it and banned from ever serving in a position of authority, be it even a manager at McDonald's, ever again. Workers being treated well and respected rather than subject to abuse means happier devs and more devs to share ideas and work on things. This means more games and the quality of the work will only improve; so everyone benefits from the game industry improving for all the workers. It'd be in the own self interest of such people unsubscribing and complaining to actually get on board and kick up a stink too. That's not an okay stance to take however, because what the workers have had to and still continue to go through is beyond obscene and disgusting. That's the real problem to be addressed. The sheer level of wanton cruelty with no regard from the higher ups, who act like no one below them is even human is quite scary when you think about it and no one should ever have to go through with it.
I unsubbed from this channel for a few reasons but none are related to the content. Steph covers very important subjects everyone should know about. If you want fun content, we need to help demand change so less of this crap happens in the first place.
Steph has always cracked down hard on this and will always do so, the beauty of the Jimquisition is that it lives off of people who want to hear the bad news, to help them spread until greater action can be taken And if you were a survivor of any sort of abuse in any capacity: i'm sorry, it's awful knowing people out there are getting the short end of the stick every day while the Koticks, and the Wilsons, and Guillemouts, and people in position of any power apparently only draw "get out jail free"
Bobby Kotick's actions can be summed up by that classic scene in Transformers G1: Megatron: "You're either lying or you're stupid!" Starscream: "I'm stupid! I'm stupid!"

Anita Sarkeesian talked about literally nothing regarding workplace abuse. She only tried to say video games themselves were sexiest and abusive. And pointed to things like Princess peach as proof. Her arguments were terrible.
Yeah. Sarkeesian herself got so much flak for saying such milktoast things and still does, whereas the ghouls in this industry commit serious offenses and cover up for each other and most of them won't be subjected to a month of what the women in this industry go through during their entire careers. I think about that a lot too.

'Voting with your wallet' is slacktivism. There are 99 people dumber than you, less woke than you, more burnt-out than you, still consuming mindlessly. Vote with your voting booth instead. Vote as left as you can. Republicans are bigots who shoot racial minorities and dehumanize women.
@@JoshSweetvale As much as I wish that were true, its not. The highest powers you know of are all just puppets with rich corpo's hands up their asses making them talk. Voting in America is about as helpful as pissing into the wind. At least voting with our wallets can ever-so-slightly annoy our financial gods.
@Billy Bandito This is why I think we need to make a "Death Penalty" for companies that commit crimes that simultaneously bans the leadership of that company from owning shares or being on a board of directors again. Take their money, take their ability to make more money and toss them in a government run prison for a non-negotiable decade where the only people they can rub shoulders with are other former executives who also are handicapped from doing more business. To prevent them from networking with Organized crime or learning how to cook drugs or something cause you know they aren't too proud to try that shit.
Thanks for what you do Jim Stephanie Sterling. We appreciate you going through the emotionally harrowing process of covering this shit. It takes a toll. Thanks.
Thank you Stephanie. I'm glad you have been keeping up with abuse in the gaming industry. He was genuinely shocked! ...That his crimes have caught up to him. Also good God, I'm striking companies off my list of 'willing to reluctantly engage in capitalism' with, left and right.
It's always lawsuits and settlements, we need something that will make these executives afraid to carry on enabling this abuse, something riskier than loosing money to those who are the least reason to fear loosing it. I think even a few months in prison (though it should be years) would be more effective than any hundred million dollar lawsuit, some form of punishment that doesn't attack their wallets.
But their wallets is all they care about. They won't care about going to prison, they'll still be *making money* while they're inside. Activision needs to burn, and all the board members and executives should have their assets seized and distributed among the employees.
@@RaunienTheFirst That first point practically never true, otherwise they'd live on the absolute bare minimum and do nothing else with their money. Money offers them comfort, luxury and power, a prison sentence does very significantly take away from that, even if just temporarily. Sure, establishing socialism does do the same to a greater degree if that's what you want to campaign for, but something is better than nothing, and if you only set your sights on a jump as large as seizing their wealth then you'll be stuck with nothing for a very long time before then (assuming that it ever happens).
That's the power of capitalism. People need money to survive, and if a company is offering a couple million dollars to shut up about getting sexually assaulted, people may take it. Socialism gives society a base-line of comfort, especially if you consider UBI. With a base-line like that in place, people may be less inclined to take the bribe. Instead, preferring to take up the attack because they can't be as easily exploited into submission.
My first thought about the articles coming out last week was that I was ready for Monday's Jimquisition. I totally understand why you report this evil, because it continues to not go away. I wish more people reported this stuff.

Even though it's hard for me to hear about this stuff, I'm so happy that you keep talking about it. It makes me feel like there is some hope that things could get better when there's people out there that refuse to just forget about these horrible acts. I hope this comment can help offset all the negative ones and let you know that you're doing the right thing.
Ever since I was 11 (am 24 now) I wanted to be a games developer. I've worked on honing my skills for 13 years, and now that I'm ready to take those skills into the industry.. I've decided to give it all up. Because the industry is so corrupt, so abusive, so despicable that I would either get chewed up and spat out or be forced to become one of those monsters myself. And I hold myself to too high a standard to be Bobby Kotick, Yves Guillamot or that guy from Xbox One who was in Zinga or whatever. More and more bright young talents like me are making the same decisions, and so given time the industry will probably sort itself out in time, but only because nobody new will be wanting to join the fold. God, I know that Hollywood can be a rough place, especially in its early days, but I'm pretty sure the game industries problems outstrip even that!
I always feel the need to thank steph for their absolute dedication and hard work to making gaming better for everyone. While you might be losing subs, your content is only getting better, and people would rather hold their fingers in their ears then help each other out, thank you for not being one of those people. So from one Trans to another, thank you!
Keep fighting that good fight Steph. Yours is one of the loudest voices consistently pointing out industry abuse. We're with you and all those poor gits on the ground floor all the way x
Which higher ups?! The systems meant to control the CEO are stuffed with his friends and people he helped get into those jobs. He won't leave until he retires and the person that succeeds him will be whoever Kottick chose.
Thank you Jephanie for reporting on this abuse and the companies that allow it. It helps inform me of the games I should stay away from, and the companies to avoid.
Thank God for you as always ! One note though : "Guillemot" is pronounced with a harg G like in "guilty of covering for abusers". Because the french language has no constant. ^^
eh, G before U is basically always hard though. Guilaume, Guerre, Guitare. Same with O and A. I think E and I are the only vowels that tend to have the soft cosonant. Gifle, Giraffe, energie, gilles, Gerant, gene, etc. it's in fact English that has no constant. French paradoxically just has way too many rules to keep track of (which gives the impression that it's non constant). Admittedly there are often specific exceptions to any given rules, (since no oganic language is ever fully structurally sound) but even then those are stated and accounted for
The soft G in English comes directly from the French in fact, and most English words that have a hard G before an E or I are retained from Old English, whilst the other words came from French later on. English has a 'constant' to a degree, in that the pronunciation indicated by its orthography is largely tied first to an overarching set of rules and then further potentially altered by a given word's etymology. It's not the most efficient system but it's not _quite_ as off the wall as it's often made out to be.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for continuing to cover these types of things still happening in the gaming industry. As more of this has come out, I have had to seriously consider my commitment to purchasing video games as my hobby. I still love video games, but these types of reports have allowed me to expand my hobby to including board gaming and tabletop RPGs, which I enjoy playing just as much as video games. Keep up the good work and let's all hope for a better tomorrow!

I won't be, cos it'll probably mean they're dead
That or they've given up on things ever improving, which, you know, kudos for them still believing in that possibility

@@CharlieTheSupersaurus Perhaps a lot of those people who want others to shut up are in fact evil pricks themselves reveling in the abuse.

Thank you J Steph. As a survivor myself, this sort of coverage is vitally important. I guarantee that this sort of thing helps, if at least by making some of the victims feel a little more heard.
We all *want* more fun video game content. But this is much more important, so this is what gets covered. If you want fun content, we need to help demand change so less of this crap happens in the first place.
Steph has always cracked down hard on this and will always do so, the beauty of the Jimquisition is that it lives off of people who want to hear the bad news, to help them spread until greater action can be taken
And if you were a survivor of any sort of abuse in any capacity: i'm sorry, it's awful knowing people out there are getting the short end of the stick every day while the Koticks, and the Wilsons, and Guillemouts, and people in position of any power apparently only draw "get out jail free"
Bobby Kotick's actions can be summed up by that classic scene in Transformers G1:
Megatron: "You're either lying or you're stupid!"
Starscream: "I'm stupid! I'm stupid!"
Actiblizz: "There is only room for one abuser in this company and we are hereby commited to hire more victims for him."
Woof!
Oh yes; here’s the Jimquisition I was hoping to see! Been looking forward to this all week! Bobby’s rotten to the core, as is anyone at that damned company that dares to defend him.
Thank you for keeping the focus on these things. I know it has to be extremely stressful and exhausting for a variety of reasons, but it is very important we don't ignore it.
Lately I've been thinking about Anita Sarkeesian and all the other women who said the game industry was skeevy years ago. The women who got shouted down and harassed for it.
Been thinking about them alot.
No one listens to us :(
@Janeiro I which of her points were actually awful?
Anita Sarkeesian talked about literally nothing regarding workplace abuse. She only tried to say video games themselves were sexiest and abusive. And pointed to things like Princess peach as proof. Her arguments were terrible.
Yeah. Sarkeesian herself got so much flak for saying such milktoast things and still does, whereas the ghouls in this industry commit serious offenses and cover up for each other and most of them won't be subjected to a month of what the women in this industry go through during their entire careers.
I think about that a lot too.

Never complain to Jim that they're talking about abuse in the VG industry too much. That's tantamount to shooting the messenger.
If you want Jim to talk about aspects other than the gross abuse, negligence, and judicial miscarriages, then stand behind Jim. Push the message. This is far more important than the GTA remastered being a steaming pile of code or how NFTs are a scam that even game devs like BHVR are falling for.. It will forever be more important than things like these.
And we need to only stop talking about it when it stops being perpetuated. Harsh, focused light is an effective disinfectant.
If you want Jim to shut up and go back to talking about things like before, then you're part of the problem. Because that's asking for the problems to go back under the rug.
People don't want to hear that they are funding a company ripe with abuse. They want to bury their head in the sand, resurfacing on the release of the next Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed and returning to the sand immediately after.
Lets be blunt Jim. This kind of crap needs to be talked about, I knew that Kotick was a pos but at this point we should deal with this nonsense the right way.
I have so much trouble watching your videos. Not because of you, you are very entertaining and awesome. In fact, I consider you one of my heroes. It's because of how awful the game industry is. Months ago, I resolved myself to never give Activision or Ubisoft even just ONE more of my fucking pennies. In that sense, even if I rarely watch your videos, you're currently achieving a small part of your goal in getting people to stop giving these monsters our money. Good luck, Stephanie. No matter how awful and mentally taxing this bullshit may be, keep your chin up; there's a lot of good in this world. Keep fighting the good fight; we're all behind you and against these bastards.
Steph did say in a video that they completely understand if people can't watch these Jimquisitions all the time, and you shouldn't feel like you have to if it's impacting your mental health. Honestly the more people who know about this and speak up about it (just in their own personal interactions and conversations) the more impact it can have. The biggest problem seems to be people not only tolerating it, but actually attacking any criticism - if we can shift those general attitudes to where it becomes unacceptable, that's where we could see some pressure to change or regulate them. Spread the word and all that!
@@cactustactics I think its almost a form of abusive relationship. These people have been gaslit so much by the gaming industry that they have had their perception of reality broken down to where they are reliant on their abuser.

It's that kind of toxicity that's usually the loudest, but the more everyone else becomes aware, the more marginalised those attitudes will become hopefully. Imagine if Gamers(TM) directed a fraction of their rage at women who dare suggest that games could be a little less sexist to the abusive CEOs that are actually destroying the industry.
To be fair, quite a few people who were just parroting the narrative without realising where it actually leads or by whom they're used as free propaganda kind of woke up (the fact that Blizzard started to be disliked for other reasons also helped) Asmongold, Bellular, etc.
When it broke out I fully expected them to go full "it's a false flag conspiracy against The Gamers! Gamers!" or just pretend nothing "political" is happening, but it seems there's a limit to how much they're ready to just push people along the right-wing pipeline on those issues.
@James Rule I mean I learnt about this stuff from Asmongold before Jim. But he fits the older stereotype pretty well. Though not the older older stereotype cause you know he doesn't have braces and glasses.
@@noonenowhere877 To me anyway, "Gamer(TM)" isn't so much a stereotypical gamer as someone who would complain Kotaku "encourages piracy" when they mentioned emulation, then show screenshots of how much better Ocarina of Time looks third-party emulated compared to the official Switch release _the very next week._ They don't care about either piracy or game preservation, they just want to be mad at Kotaku because it's "SJW."

We need their heads. Or their wealth. About the same to them.
@@Hero_Puddle Look up the term "luxury prison suite"
That's the power of capitalism. People need money to survive, and if a company is offering a couple million dollars to shut up about getting sexually assaulted, people may take it. I think E and I are the only vowels that tend to have the soft cosonant. Gifle, Giraffe, energie, gilles, Gerant, gene, etc.
it's in fact English that has no constant. French paradoxically just has way too many rules to keep track of (which gives the impression that it's non constant). Admittedly there are often specific exceptions to any given rules, (since no oganic language is ever fully structurally sound) but even then those are stated and accounted for
@@badflamer Yeah, I know, I am French and a teacher. I was just kidding around. ^^
Or like guillotine.
