Very impressed with Kovalev. He will have tougher test once he faces the other champions and the new contenders but still on that showing he will be hard to beat.

Kovalev's new found humility has made him stronger. That's what I saw in the fight.

  • @tombarry1824

Kovalev is heavy handed so even when he is boxing the shots are having an effect on opponent.
Ward said it was when Kovalev boxes and throws the jab and sharp short straight punches is the most difficult to fight against, not when he is swinging for the KO.

Well, bloody hell. I wasn't expecting that. Kovalev elevated his game, big time. I thought Alvarez was going to do the business more quickly this time, but Kovalev finally got it figured out. I think those losses were actually valuable for Kovalev. He now understands the value in listening to a trainer and dialling back his bully mentality. Completely caught by surprise but fair play to him.

Kovalev beat Ward the first time imo, he was winning the second fight before he started to wither from the rough boxing by ward, this Kovalev with better conditioning and smarter boxing IQ and is in a better place mentally, he would beat Ward imo. I still think he would lose to Bivol, he has a good chance against the other top fighters.

I wanted Kovalev to win, but i thought he wouldn't because of his age and his personal problems which could hinder his performance. Glad i was wrong. Wish he continues to improve, he clearly had a good colaboration with Buddy McGirt. He's now a 3 time champion he clearly has great ability. A fight with Gvodzyk would be great.

What do we make of the presenters talking to the corners and questioning why certain things weren't being done? I'm not saying that it affected the fight, though saying to Alvarez's trainer "why doesn't he go to the body?" is a bit dodgy.

  • @beniamingt

I've always rated Kovalev, but there seemed to be a mental weakness rear it's head over the past few years, so tonight I wondered if he had anything left.
First time we've really seen him show such nous in the ring, so hats off to him and his trainer.
It will be much harder against Bivol, but if he can get the gameplan right, I wouldn't completely write him off.
