Yes, it is Jocelyn Brown's voice that was sampled (from one of her classic tracks) for only the one phrase "I've got the power," but it is Penny Ford's vocals that you hear in most of the song that carries the track. In the music video, it is my former Frankfurt American High School classmate, Jackie Harris, that you see lip-syncing the vocals. To this day, this is still a monster jam!!! It has stood the test of time!
I love this song and knew years ago that Penny Ford sang on this song but learned just yesterday from an interview with Jocelyn Brown that she’s singing I GOT THE POWER line. Wow two awesome ladies and singers. I met Penny Ford at a casino in CT back in 1998 when she was working with Chaka Kahn. No soon as I saw her I knew who she was for I saw her interview on Video Soul with Donny Simpson. A sweet lady indeed.
I always thought Pennye looked different in the Snap video. But I was just reminded that it was Jocelyn Brown's vocal that was NEVER acknowledged. Jocelyn's "I'VE GOT HE POWER," line is the crux of the song. Amazing how record execs treat true talent.
That’s the thing. It’s Jocelyn’s strong voice and conviction singing “I’ve Got the Power” that made the song big, even though her part was a sample. But despite that, anyone could have made a rap verse and got a hit of it. Same with Martha singing “Everybody Dance Now”. Her vocals alone make the song, and anyone could have added a rap verse to go along with it. Unfortunately Turbo B got a big head thinking his solo career would jump off from it.... ironically the same thing Freedom Williams thought but their solo careers flopped
Penny Ford actually said that's not her singing the hook (I've got the power) you can look up the Apollo live video and she is actually in the comments saying that's not her that's why she don't sing that part! She also gave credit to Jocelyn Brown in her comment. Penny is the female voice in this song except for the one part (I've got the Power) that's Jocelyn Brown's voice!
Thank you all for looking at facts my mother jocelynbrown has been sampled and used for her gift like many others its time we fight back because we do have the power!!!!!
I'm sure the record companies dealt with that... they're all corporations who deal with samples taken from different songs, they all work together, it's not just some underground dj stealing samples and getting rich off it... so calm yourself
I was in school with Jackie Harris the girl in video n her sister Angel we were n are Army Brats .very nice n talented dancers we all were now in our 50s the opportunity was Awesome for her . Stop the Hating !! Who wouldn't have taken the job?
Cool's version is the actual original song....but the powers that be didn't want a black song like that to resurrect the spirit of black people so they put out a watered down version of the original...... Both a great versions but they definitely had to kill that warrior spirit that was about to rise up from those vocals.
@@shacks29 Snap released the Chill Rob G version first, got into troubles, said it was by accident and re-recorded it with raps by Turbo B and additional vocals by Penny Ford...
That is some bull crap right there. Sounds like what happened to Martha Wash. She never got in most of her videos either, nor credited for some of the biggest slam hits of the 90's. Wild West back then in music, everybody was lip sync'n in concerts too.
They actually wanted Chaka Khan in the group and to record “The Power”, not Penny. However Chaka refused to do the project and instead wanted Penny to do it. Penny initially refused too until Chaka briefly fired her and made her do it. But they wanted Chaka to sing the line “I’ve Got the Power” so it wouldn’t be a sample.
She was on drug real bad that was they didn't find u cuz I'm sure that you know what the video date was going to be on come on you know what the play was

So you mean to tell me my friend Jackie did not originally sing that song and that she was lip syncing?
Yes, Jackie Harris (my former classmate at FAHS) did not sing on the song but performed in the video.
+Glen Mac is Jackie a singer at all or was it just a video thing?? IS she on any social media?? Just asking as a curious fan.
HEY WINSTON P I KNOW HER PERSONALLY
Is she online anywhere??
Penny Ford is so amazing. She's still performing a lot. She has two beautiful solo albums

Penny Ford has been inducted into the Cincinnati Black Music Walk of Fame ❤.

and lets not forget that it is Jocelyn Brown who provided the vocal hook/sample

Jackie used to beat up boys 😂 4real!!!!
It's a great song... I wish they would have put her in the videos
the chill rob g version ,if you listen to it is as good as snaps version in my opinion

@@kenralph1748 Chill Robs version is NOT the OG one he "stole" this idea from Snap and made it his own after Snap samples a few of his vocals.

i wondered who that man was for Snaps 2014 performance. I see he was the new Turbo replace for years now.
I always wondered why it wasn’t here in the video
They did the same thing to the woman from C&C Music Factory. The used someone else in the video.
Martha Wash is the singer ! She’s amazing ❤
Penny has a great voice
She is Beautiful and looks like her Sister Sharon ❤
our Jocelyn :)
Ilove you somuch miss
Wow, the actual singer was much hotter than the drone they replaced her with.
Not really but if that's what u think
Jocelyn Brown was sampled for sure and a portion of Chaka Khan or maybe Penny Ford resung Chaka Khan.
