Scott nailed making the most unsettling and uncomfortable environment possible. Not even just the ambience, but also the occasional background noises you hear. It’s true horror.
Imagine being Scott. Previously made Christian games before that almost nobody played, then he had the idea of making a horror game about a restaurant with animatronics set in 1987. Scott may not have realized it at the time, but he slowly added more lore into every iteration of the FNAF franchise.
The first Five Nights at Freddy's is untouchable, everything about the game is just right. The sound design is what makes this game standout from the rest of them, especially the little details like Foxy's hum; or the circus theme that plays randomly.
Speaking of the sound design, this theme plays constantly if you let foxy peak outside pirate's cove. It's a great way to tell his progress when none of the other animatronics are close since this normally plays when the others move in.
Scott really made this unsettling, the lighting. The animatronics. The feel of this. The music. The look in there eyes. How did he make somthing with a soul. Soulless?
Fnaf 1 definitely felt the most scary and ghostly since it was the first of its kind, there was basically no games that functioned like this and Scott made the atmosphere and ambience perfect, so that all of it felt quite spooky to say the least

For those wondering, 0:15 is not a real image in the game. It's a fake image that circulated through the internet, but because people had played the game so long ago, they would not be able to clearly remember what is in the game, thus they would remember seeing this image in either a UA-camrs video or in their own playthrough, when it never existed at all. It's an interesting case study of the Mandela effect (remembering something that never happened).
It wasn’t fake, it was just unused, but people probably saw it in some FNAF unused items compilation, and it quickly spread, before being grouped with the game, due to old memories.
At 3:00 the endoskeleton staring at you gives me a sense that the other animatronics are not the only ones that are haunted. It feels like remnant (both literally in the sense souls are called remnant but also) that was left over from the toy animatronics. Stuck in parts and service forced to sit there for god knows how long. Which makes it very sad too.
I interpret the endoskeleton more as just the objects in the building also being affected by agony since agony and remnant are 2 different things. It isn't possessed but it's still haunted I guess
I think that the main 4 Animatronics are not possessed but the heads and endoskeletons are. Also wdym possessed toy Animatornics they have a broken criminal database
I don’t think the toy animatronics were ever possessed. They just had facial recognition technology that easily screwed up, causing them to turn deadly, and as such they ended up being scrapped after the place closed. (Likely due to both the Bite of ‘87 and another "missing children incident" when William Afton struck again.)
To my knowledge the Toys weren't actually possessed, only tampered with. Here I think the whole building exhibits paranormal activity from time to time, which makes it more interesting

He was meant to only attack when the player ran out of power. But then Scott at the last moment decided to add Freddy Fazbear in ALL of those other rooms. Such a genius. I'm truly going to miss him. He had that "terror charm" that he gave to this first game. What a shame that the new ones aren't like this... { "Dark yet with small lights. With the feeling that you're in a place that was used to be the happiest one of the world... But now it is an place where you will possibly die." } The ambience of the game being spooky and eerie like if you're surrouned by ghosts or *something.* Everything went to hell making the most recent game look like an childish version of what we have been seen. Still, has his creepy moments but not everything there seems "off" and "eerie". Let's hope Security Breach's DLC fixes all of this by not adding cringe/ nonscary stuff or even an new and *EVEN MORE, MORE DESTROYED* version of the one and only William Afton.
I agree, personally I think security breach was the biggest mistake of the fnaf franchise, was not at all creepy except for maybe 2 parts. The biggest problem they had with it is that it lacked any real fear, and changed it for some cheap ass jumpscares. You were in a pizzaplex with bright lights, happy music, and it is SO neon it’s mental and it was never really creepy. That’s why I’m looking forward to fnaf +. Phisnom has experience making great and creepy fan games.

Personally, I prefer Fnaf 1 more than the rest, this is why its atmosphere is more gloomy, the game over screen gives you chills (I mean, they have literally put you in a suit and you can see how your character's eye sockets are outside) and especially because of how dark the setting is
