    The Macallan 12 sherry was one of the first "higher" end scotches that got me started in my whiskey journey. Always a SIP in my bar!

    After hearing so much bad blood against Macallan from other UA-cam channels, it’s very good to see that on a blind tasting, Macallan still rates high amongst other brands. I always thought Macallan is a premium expression with a creamier profile than most. But the enthusiasts are very angry at the brand for some reason. I still consider it one of the best out there. Cheers!

      It certainly had a more viscous feel to it and the sherry note was more pronounced. I was a little surprised with the results, but I can't argue with it. The Macallan was just flat out better for me. Cheers!

    First of all, I would consider myself a beginner when it comes to whisky. Over the past year, I’ve been making an effort to try and explore different whiskies. I’ve watched videos on many channels, but your channel has become my favorite. I can’t understand how your follower count is still so low. Your videos are amazing, and I hope you keep going. I couldn’t find a video about Balvenie-if you haven’t made one yet, it would be great if you could. I’m particularly curious about the Balvenie 14 Caribbean Cask. Cheers from Turkey

      Thanks. I appreciate you. Unfortunately I don't have the Balvenie 14, but I do have the single barrel sherry cask 15 and the standard double wood 12. They are both very good. I will look to see if I can find the 14 and get it in like for a review. Cheers!

    I haven't tried sherry macallan 12, but regular one is pretty good, especially for beginners, due to its soft mouth feel. I actually started my whiskey journey with it. Let's say gently opens the door. But of course it is not cheap. Cheers guys

      The amount of sherry and the viscosity was certainly a factor in the win. The Glen Allachie fell short in both categories. Cheers!

    The Macallan distillery seems to elicit of negativity from whisky enthusiasts so it's nice to see Peter pick the Sherry Oak. I love the Sherry Oak and think it's one of the best entry level sherry whiskies out there.

      I'm a big sherry fan and like you said, whiskey enthusiasts have a negative impression of this bottle, but I was pleasantly surprised with it. It was viscous, rich, and had a depth of flavor that the Glen Allachie was lacking.

      Macallan comes in at a higher price point than other comparable bottles so many treat it as overrated but I agree: it’s compliments are well deserved

  • @MrMBBM

    I haven’t compared the two yet, but I have both bottles on my shelf, unopened . I wanted to point out the rise in price for scotch in general, and for Macallan in particular. I bought this bottle for $75, two or three years ago , and I remember that just three weeks later it was $90. Now it’s $100! I really hope you’re right, and this is a great bottle.

    I think the Glenallachie 12 is underwhelming, as-in flat on the palate to me. And the Macallan 12 Sherry Oak is much too strong in Sherry dominance. I actually prefer the Glenallachie 15 and it’s $99 at my local shop. Excellent review, Peter! Cheers 🥃

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  12 днів тому

      I agree. The Macallan does come across as sherry dominant. I can see this hitting the point of too much sherry and over casked. I think something in between the two would be more preferred. Cheers!

  • @lyacoubian

    Another bottle that could complete with these two is the Glenfarclas 12. I tend to reach for this exact Macallan 12 when in the mood for a sherry aged single malt.

    Terrific comparison Peter. For me Macallan 12 and other Macallan expressions are generally overpriced/overrated. But that's just me! I gave up alcohol completely after a recent heart disease diagnosis and newly released research on cancer risk from this level 1 carcinogen. The heart issue may be genetic. I will be fine and have a superb medical specialist! No worries. I am a long distance runner, slim and I'm a vegetarian. I drank in very small amounts as a caution. I don't fit the profile for risk of heart disease so a genetic predisposition is likely. Hope you are healthy and well! Cheers!

      I was wondering how you have been. Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. Staying healthy as we age can be difficult especially when genetics play a part in it. You can do everything right to stay healthy and then genetics kicks in and messes up everything. I'm happy to hear you are taking measures to stay as healthy as you can. It's nice to hear from you again. I feel the same way about Macallan, but this blind revealed more viscosity and depth of flavor over the Glen Allachie that I didn't realize was there. All good over here. I'm enjoying my retirement and having fun on the BBQ circuit with my brother in law. Take care!

    Here in Idaho the sherry oak is $100. The Glenallachie is not available.

    • @aaronberkowitz1803
      @aaronberkowitz1803 11 днів тому +1

      @ Idaho has a state controlled liquor market. The scotch selection is poor. Bourbon is better, they put the allocated bourbons on the shelf at random times, all at msrp.

    In our country in Europe the Glenallechie around 50euro, the Macallan is 100, and only 40%, not 43!! And of course colored and chill filtered… :/ uncomparable…

    • @whiskeyisajourney
      @whiskeyisajourney  11 днів тому

      I've always found that to be odd. Why do you think there's a difference in the abv?

    • @balazsremport3875
      @balazsremport3875 11 днів тому +1

      @@whiskeyisajourney I read somewhere that in the US the higher abv is more common, so they probably couldn't sell it at 40%. But I don't know if this is true...If I understand correctly, taxes in England rise with abv, in our country it is fixed. So that should not be a reason.
