  • Changing the battery and back cover of a Sony Xperia Z1 Compact D5503.
    Mainly utilizing a hair dryer and a guitar pick, maybe a spudger and a little bit of patience.
    A suitable battery is available here (it's one without the antenna, you have to reuse your old antenna if you need NFC):
    US: amzn.to/2WZRKq6
    UK: amzn.to/2XyVu1f
    DE: amzn.to/2ZJJcQZ
    A back cover similar to the one I used is available here:
    US: amzn.to/2qTjuJi
    UK: amzn.to/2prurk9
    DE: amzn.to/2qKaGbA

    A few additional things to note:
    - Do not push the pick in too deep. You can end up damaging the NFC sticker on the old battery (more on that below).
    - The camera lens area is magnetic, so be careful when removing the screw, as it might magnetize to the lens.
    - My new battery did not come with an NFC sticker or the foam square above the power connector. I had to remove these from the old battery using the toolkit tools and then reapply them to my new battery.
    - When removing the film on the back of the backplate, there is a second layer of film on the camera lens. Remove this additional film circle with tweezers.

      No problem! I'm just happy I got my phone working again. I had the same issue as you, but I rode it out until the battery was nearly completely dead. It would only last for about 6% until shutting off.

    Hi Jan, excellent tutorial. One of the best I've seen.
    Just a couple of questions, did the replacement battery hold it's charge once it had been fully charged and have you tested the phone's waterproof capability since you put the new back cover one?
    Thanks from the UK!

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  8 років тому

      +Andrew Wyatt Thanks Andrew. The replacement battery holds its charge very well. I guess I was lucky and it's a real Sony one. I heard there's a special glue to keep the phone waterproof (which I didn't use). I suspect mine isn't anymore.

    Thanks very much for video,thanks to you I successfully replaced my one with an original battery without NFC ( I don't mind) it came 18%charged and now my phone is like new. I accidentally had the correct metal tool and that allowed me to remove the case easily and without damage it . I already ordered a replacement but I could actually re seal the original one. Thanks again :)

    Hi, great video, I'm trying to replace my battery but it still does not seem to work. So I would like to know, How many time did you leave the battery charge before it works at all? Thank you in advance for your answer.

    • @TheAbyss200
      @TheAbyss200 8 років тому

      I ask this because I don't know If I did something wrong because when I try to charge it the light is only blinking on red and I don't know if it is charging or not. Or if it is something that I did not put on its place

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  8 років тому

      +TheAbyss200 I think the red light blinking means there's something wrong with your battery and it's not charging. Mine worked fine after the first charge. Is the battery connector correctly inserted (the flex cable pointing to the bottom of the phone)? Sometimes even a little dust on the connector prevents it from making contact. Try reinserting it. Otherwise you probably got a faulty battery, I guess.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  8 років тому

      +TheAbyss200 Could also be that the charging circuit in the phone itself is broken. Did the old battery charge at least for a bit? If so, the circuit is prbly fine.

    • @TheAbyss200
      @TheAbyss200 8 років тому

      +manny me I think there is pre-cut double sided adhesive available. You I could also just use a good thin double sided tape around all edges (I recommend 3M brand). The phone will obviously not be waterproof anymore except you get a special adhesive for that purpose.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  2 роки тому

      Oh, sorry to hear that. The replacement batteries come with and without NFC antennas from different manufacturers I think. If you are patient, you can peel off the antenna from the old battery and reuse it. It is literally just a sticker.

  • @diegocanossa5676
    @diegocanossa5676 8 років тому +1

    Thank you for the tutorial. The replacement batteries I find online don't seem to have that square circuit that you said to be the antenna (NFC). Is it possible that new batteries come without the antenna? If so, is it possible to dettach it from the old battery and stick it to the new one? Thank you very much!

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  8 років тому +2

      A lot of replacement batteries come without the NFC antenna. It should be possible to carefully peel it off the original battery and put it on the new one. It's just a kind of sticker. If it breaks, you only lose the NFC capability of the phone, everything else should be fine.

  • @cannnonfoddder
    @cannnonfoddder 7 років тому

    I made the ameture mistake of trying to prise the back off from the side which leverages the entire internal frame out. Protip: Start prising the back off from the notch at the top (speaker?) then there's no mistake. Changed the battery (mine didn't come with an NFC antenna though), replaced the back and all seems good again.

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      +cannnonfoddder Yes, starting from the notch is indeed a good idea. I nearly made the mistake myself on the first try but realized it before I applied force. Glad your repair worked in the end. :)

      +Carl Quinn The old one on this particular phone was very scratchy. Especially the camera lens cover was damaged so it had to go. Plus it's far easier to insert a new cover with fresh sticky tape than trying to get new tape on the old cover, I think. You can try, of course. Maybe it works for you. Hi Lynn. I'm afraid I can't really help you there. Got both things from German ebay. The back cover I just bought the cheapest one I could find that had the sticky stuff already on it. The battery claimed to be a Sony original (which it probably is) which was salvaged from an unused phone that was on display somewhere. Maybe you can find something similar. Good luck anyway!

  • @ShaveyaHead
    @ShaveyaHead 8 років тому

    Awesome video, I'll definitely be using it next week to replace my battery. All I can find on Ebay though is batteries without the NFC antenna. If I use one, will it affect anything other than NFC? Cos I never use it and can live without it. Also, was the battery cover you got an official Sony one or 3rd party?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  8 років тому

      Losing the NFC antenna will not affect anything else afaik. I think you can also try and carefully remove/reapply the old antenna if you want to keep NFC capability. It's basically just a sticker. The back cover I used was the cheapest one I could find that had the sticky tape already on it. Definitely not an official one.

    • @ShaveyaHead

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      I got lucky and found an new old stock original on eBay. I think you only get original parts if you are a certified repair shop otherwise. You have to gamble and buy a third party one I'm afraid.

    Hi Jan Beta, Thanks for this beautiful Tutorial. m just waiting for my new battery which i have ordered from Amazon.india the name of the battery in amazon i written as Sony Xperia Z1 Mini D5503 Z1 Compact M51W Battery (LIS1529ERPC) (SP)
    and i m geeting it tomorrow. hope i will get Original Sony battery. or atleast a good battery which has good life. so my question to u is once i remove back case. will my Z1c looses water resistance capability...?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      +Girish M Thanks! Yes, it will not be as water resistant as before. There is some kind of special sealant available, but I'm not aware of how to get it unfortunately.

      Hi Jan Beta yesterday i tried replacing battery but i opened the back case successfully but my new battery power connector to phone was not at all connecting i tried many times no luck, my phone failed to turn on. phone was turning on only when i unscrew it and hold the power connector so i just gave to phone repair center and that guy fixed it and said me that the connector strip was little short in size so it was not connecting...unfortunately i had to pay little money for fixing it. not a problem anyways it got fixed.

      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      +Girish M Oh, good that your phone works again. Not so nice that the battery connector didn't fit well. I guess there is a lot of fake and low quality replacement batteries out there. Unfortunately it's very hard to tell which ones are good until you try. Hope you didn't pay too much. Anyways, thanks for sharing!

    how to reuse antenna nfc?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  6 років тому

      If you are really careful, you can peel off the antenna (it's just a sticker) and reapply it in the same spot on the new battery.

  • @letsgochamp8516
    @letsgochamp8516 7 років тому

    hi can use the one without that black antena at the back, amazon dont have this type of batteery any more

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому +1

      They should work just fine. The only thing you lose is the NFC capability (which most people don't ever use anyway). You could also try reusing the antenna from the old battery. It is basically just a sticker that can carefully be peeled off and attached to the new battery.

    Hello. Thank you for this video.
    I have a question. Can battery removal affect phone data (settings and all) in any case?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому +1

      +SniperNLN I'm not an expert on how the data is stored but it should all be flash storage so it won't be affected at all by removing the battery. It's just like turning the phone off and on again. You should always make a backup of any important data before you open up a device anyway, just to be perfectly safe.

    Thank you for this great tutorial. I changed my battery following your instructions :-)
    As far as you know, does the newer battery cover make the phone water proof as before?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому +1

      +Claudio Nicolotti Glad that it worked for you! The new cover is most probably not very waterproof though. You would have to use some kind of special glue for waterproofing it again.

    hi, i want ask is that ur z1 compact have the issues that turn off automatic due to the overheating, and sometimes it cant charge normally, it will get the red link blink and blink. Need to rest a little time then can continue charging

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      Mine just turned off. No blinking or overheating. The failure sounds like it's also the battery. Could also be the charging circuitry but the battery is far more likely to fail.

      Jan Beta how to test the battery?

    • @JanBeta
      @JanBeta  7 років тому

      I don't know of a way to do it from the outside. You would have to take the battery out and test it with a multimeter. And it would probably show the right voltage anyway. I would just try a new battery I think. Chances are quite good that it fixes it.

    • @JanBeta

      +Tomas Cingel No, there is some special adhesive available that is said to make it waterproof again but if you just use double-sided tape like in my case it won't be fully waterproof anymore.

    A very helpful video; easy to follow and understand.
    My new battery did not come with the NFC sticker, I carefully peeled it from the old battery and stuck it in place on the new battery without a problem.
    There are 2 small tabs at the lower end of the battery which need fitting in place first, before the top right [tiny] screw, or the cover will not fit properly.
    As a native English speaker may I say how impressed I am with your excellent English.
    Keep up the good work
    PS Is the Z1 Compact a lovely little phone, or what?
