- How reliable are F-35s, the most advanced fighter jets from the Lockheed Martin stable? The issue was raked up by Rep Matt Gaetz at a hearing of the House Armed Services Committee.
Citing a report of the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) put out a fortnight ago, Gaetz asked pointed questions about the fighters, their sustainability and combat readiness. He even went to call then $100 million paperweights. Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin responded.

Tejas is a 1980s era technology platform....It is almost obsolete now. .. There is nothing to be proud of. We should be ashamed that we can't still make a 5th gen fighter.
The development of the F-35 was a financial disaster, costing $150 billion in development and construction. To date, the suspicion of corruption and taking advantage has not been completely dispelled. It was developed back in the 1990s together with Jakolev's design office (YAK - 141/41). The collaboration was then ended and the USA continued to develop, test and build alone, with skyrocketing costs. Between 30 and 50 percent of the F-35 is not operational or flyable. The maintenance and repair effort is enormous. It is inferior to all other aircraft of the 4th generation and upwards in terms of flight and performance because it only has one engine. As soon as it was put into service, German engineers had already developed a system with which the F-35 could be located almost without any problems. This deprived her of her stealth technology.
