  • September 2014 found me driving to Arkansas with my good friend Frankie, AKA The Candyman, to pick up a special new member to our family. Jedidiah, The Bluetick Hound. Jed's Father can track a deer on the hoof, so naturally blood trailing, or for that matter using his sense of smell comes very natural to Jed. As an archer, there is most certainly always to be a blood trail, therefore it makes perfect sense that a Bowhunter would have a tracking dog. Jed fills that void for me. It's work, but with effort, he'll grow to be a great tracker, which means less loss game for me. WIN WIN!!

    Whoo! Jed is one fine Bluetick--six months old, you say? Good stuff in him, for sure. And I LOVE the banjo background; hunting dogs and banjos go together like bacon and eggs. Keep up the good work.

      Bud Savoie - Thanks for the view and comment. Jed was a fine dog, but sadly he never reached his full potential. At 1 year of age, Jed started having seizures. Taking him to the vet determined it was a brain tumor. The seizures continued for about a year, when they finally took his life. My family is done with big dogs for a while. Jed was always kind and never lost his track. We miss him. Keep Shooting!

    Great video, fun to watch and what a beautiful boy! Also lovely to see someone not unnecessarily resort to using live animals in a cage as target practice.

      Thanks for the kind words, he's gotten really good since then. Feel free to check out some of my other videos. I used Jedidiah in central Texas this past fall. Check out the video on my page. Don't forget to subscribe!

      +The Man - Thanks for your comment. Yep it's a miracle! Hounds have a acute since of smell, allowing them to distinguish certain smells. With proper training, certain dogs can focus on this particular smell and seek it out, even when the track is not visible to the human eye! I appreciate your kind words and thanks again for the view. I agree this video is the "Sh$t". Be sure to subscribe for future videos! Have a blessed day! 😃👍🏻

    That go pro got me feeling sea sick lol. Us Louisiana boys can sure make great dogs. A lot of people don't know that's where blueticks came from. Great video thanks

      Train Bennett Yeah the GoPro was a shaky view. But still cool. Jed is from Arkansas, but you are correct. Blue ticks came from LA. Sadly Jed had s brain tumor and died at the age of 2. It was hard, but god has a plan. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe for future hunts. Be safe and Keep Shooting!

      Twisted Arrow Productions O no poor Jed. People just can't understand the bond between animals and people. Mine are called my babies not dogs. The live inside and hunt and go every where with me. To be honest most animals are better than people. Thanks God bless you buddy.

      +FaithbyFlight I feel like I need to go ahead and get a few things lined out. First off, YES, Jed is a great dog! He is full of energy and has a great nose. With that being said, if you do decide to purchase a Bluetick Hound there are a few things you should take into consideration.
      #1 - Look at the Breed: The Sire of Jed was a great hunting dog, so was his Dam. Which is why Jed has an instinct to use his nose first and his ears second. If you are looking for a great hunting dog (Tracking) look at the parents.
      #2 - Understand what you are Getting: Because Jed is such a specially bred dog, he required a lot of additional training to learn the other things that most people like in a dog. He was leash trained, which for a dog that follows his nose, was quite the task. Blueticks are very strong dogs and will drag you easily.
      #3 - HIGH ENERGY: Jed is allowed to run freely on the 5 acres that I own across the road from the 72 that was shown in the video. If for some reason he finds something to track, he will be GONE!! If you get a Bluetick, I strongly suggest you purchase the Garmin dog collar ($800). The one with the GPS and the Shocking Collar. I went cheap on my first shock collar, which resulted in me losing Jed for 4 hours one time. I guess he got on a group of hogs and was chasing them through the swaps far from my land. One good thing about being a dog with a great nose, he was able to backtrack his scent to the house instead of getting lost. It caused me a bunch of stress and is something that will never happen again. The Garmin Collar not only shows you where your dog is, but allows you to communicate with them via sound / vibration / and finally SHOCK. I use the Shock as a final resort, but trust me, if these dogs get on a track, good luck calling their name and getting them to respond.

      Thanks for the info. I'll be on 3-10 acres here before long, so he/she will have a ton of room to move on. The Garmin collar is a good suggestion.

    Pretty dog you got there. I had sister blueticks but one recently died from complications of a brown recluse bite. It took about a year for the effects to set in. Finally had to have her put down.

      +Bill C - sorry to hear that. Somethings you just can't prevent. I appreciate the kind words about Jed. He's having his own issues these days, but still trucking. Don't forget to subscribe. I'm looking forward to putting him to work this fall. Hopefully I'll have some blood trails for him to follow..

    Just got my first blue tick and she is a house dog but I want her to track people and lost pets. Thorn in paw was a winning moment in telling the wife to stop spoiling my coworker. Can happen to any pup but I used it as "see what happens when they only walk on carpet"

    How do you live with the barking?but it is beautiful breed.

    • @CatfishHunter81
      @CatfishHunter81  5 років тому +3

      Jed didn’t bark unless there was a reason to. He was a good dog, and would have been great but for the brain tumor that took his life. It wasn’t meant to be.

    Is Bluetick’s x German shepherd mix beautiful dog?

    • @CatfishHunter81
      @CatfishHunter81  5 років тому +1

      Blue ticks are a pure breed. Not sure what the mix between a hound and a shepherd mix would look like. Either way, what’s pretty to you is all that matters I suppose. Be safe and keep shooting!
