Mads been watching thru the whole refit of Athena and it never crossed my mind that # 1 : Never any doubt your ability to finish the rebuild # 2 : Never doubted you'd get to the ocean sailing you planned . Your get it done attitude and determination as a master craftman and a real blue water sailor has always shown thru .

Been blu water sailing ten years seasick everytime for 48 hours so I medicate. For me, any brand of meclizine works great. No drowsiness, no side effects. I do get the reset effect after 5 days ashore but easy fix. I also know people with the same who have been ocean sailing 50 years so no one should ever let it stop them.

I only get seasick when the boat rolls through upright. I can't stand that motion, so I don't go dead downwind in larger waves.

I love that bit about the comment that said that "you will never finish the boat and never go sailing". According to my kids, a certain person, said exactly the same thing to them about me finishing building my Farrier F22. When I talk about going sailing, I get the biggest eyeroll youve ever seen. I have since finished rebuilding an 11ft carermaran and I am absolutely determined to not only finish the F22, but also finish several other boat projects, build my own F22 beams and mast as well, and go sailing! Thanks for the encouragement and the further inspiration to prove the non supporters wrong!!

Excited to see this crossing! A lot of boats can go cruising. It takes a certain sailor and vessel to go transatlantic. Even though you’re recording ahead of time, I still want to wish you a safe passage

I think by now that most of us don't even read or take seriously the stupidity some seem to show when there are no direct consequences. I feel sorry for the sad sacks who can't feel good without being rude or dismissive of others efforts to find joy and do something they will never do. You have done so much more than most would ever try, been so great and are a genuine good guy! Also getting that wonderful girl to accept you is a major feat! It's all good sir! Enjoy the passage and keep bringing us something we look forward to each week.

What a fantastic milestone, she looks absolutely beautiful. A proper sailing ship!
I quite understand the nerves, I'd certainly have been the same.
Although it was a tragedy that the original mast broke the way it did, a least you both can have absolute confidence in the integrity of Josephine's rig now.
She really is a lovely vessel, you're doing a great thing by saving her.
    Loving the videos!

The psychology of internet trolling and keyboard negativity is an interesting one. It so very often stems from envy, regret and pain triggered every time the troll look in the mirror and catches a glimpse of their own lives in comparison to how they see yours .

A three section watch that I have used on several passages that really works well is this:
    A: 0700 -1200
    B: 1200-1700
    C: 1700-1900
    A: 1900-2200
    B: 2200-0100
    C: 0100-0400
    A: 0400-0700
    B: 0700-1200
    C: 1200-1700
    and so on.
Look at "A", a long watch in the morning, the first evening watch, then gets 6 hours down at night, before taking the 0400-0700 morning watch, then has a 10 hour 'day off' the next day. The watch dogs every day, so every third day you get six hours night sleep and a day off. 5 hour daylight watches are not burdensome, as one or the other of the crew will usually be up and about, anyway. The lucky crew with the 'day off' is a good candidate for the cook for the day, as well.
I did a double handed Pacific crossing with a variation of this, simply have a 'no watch watch' all day, assuming that somebody is usually up and about, and picking up 3 on/ 3 off for the night.

viewers who negative comment do not understand sailing. I grew up sailing and most of the time I got seasick.....so what....if you love sailing it does not matter and I made this sacrifice for the absolute glory of the voyage. You learn what to do and what to avoid to minimize or offset getting sick. good for you for standing up to viewers who have nothing else to do but criticize others....armchair critics.....why not try positive comments you who love to opine negatively...they help more than they offend. Negativity helps no one and hurts only the person who chooses to live this way. I miss your wife!!! She is wonderful and you are so lucky to have her as your partner. I hope you all thank her every time you eat one of the delicious meals she made ahead of time for all of you.

Doing the first crossing from Cape Town to the Caribbean we started of three people and had a 5 watch per day system. Three 4 hoar watches during the night and two 6 hour watches during the day. I had the same problem on a spade rudder boat - slop in the steering column. The manufacturer recommended adding a very thin sheet of Teflon to the shaft, which worked well to keep the shaft centered and it did not increase resistance. There was no bearing at the top of the rudder post, so a haul-out was not necessary. It was as simple as sliding the sheet around the shaft and pushing it into the rudder tube. Good luck! I hope it is that easy for you.

    Great stuff.
One comment I would make as a filmmaker is try and add in more variety of talking head shots, some wide, some with you not even on camera etc.
Also, it’s quite mesmerising out there just watching and listening to the sound of the waves, wind and boat moving through the water in a vast expanse of sea. Don’t be afraid to have no talking just visuals.
Looking forward to the next one and hope no offence taken by above comment.

    H Mads,
Nice video again, I had a simular rudder problem on my sailboat, at the end it was the upper bush that was shifting to the middle of the rudder tube. To solve this, I had to remove the rudder and push the bush upwards again and fix it with some screws. Hope your problem is as simple as mine. Good winds to the carribian.
    Regards Wim

Been watching since you first got Athena. Good for you Mads! Sorry some people have to be negative. You proved them wrong. I thought your refit was spectacular and inspiring as you took on so many tasks with no prior knowledge. Loved that you learned to weld and built your own boiler. You learned how to do stuff and we learned along with you. To be honest, I worried you would be bored with simple sailing, compared with DIY projects, but I'm glad you continue and wish you the best adventures. Glad you didn't get seasick on this trip.

Been watching you for years and this is my first comment. Hearing about the negative comments really bothered me. I find your channel inspiring and I’m glad you didn’t let the negativity stop you.
