Great interview. I'm a huge fan of Joe's. The part about fear is so accurate and relatable as an addict. It gets to a point where you're afraid to do pretty much anything sober. Simple stuff like checking your phone messages or email brings with it a sense of dread. Not necessarily for any particular reason other than you don't want to find anything that's gonna make you have to get sober. It's a horrible place to be.

You ain`t kiddin SuperStrik. I would have a ton of never opened bills and unanswered calls. I have 14 yrs now and it still is a problem, because now I CARE about the mess unpaid bills can be. I went to A.A. before getting sober for a while. Every time I left after the meeting I wanted to go right to the bar and after a few beers me and a buddie would drive into the Bronx (15 min. drive) and cop dope and coke and jab speedballs in our veins for the rest of the night. Fast track to hell. I now avoid all A.A. completely. I hold a 4th Dan BB in Hopkido(from my late teens and early 20`s, so I am currently taking Krav Maga. Yup, my 56 yr old ass don`t dig all of the kicking in Hopkido, hence K.M. Cheers to you my good man!! Fair winds and following Seas.

First time I saw Joe ,he amazed me. He was playing in Amsterdam ; I stood there and was humbled as I watched. Many years have passed & you, like my pathetic self are still here. When I play my guitar & sing , your example of humility have helped so many souls. I love hearing you play & sing Desparado & Family. You're a wonderful soul. Keep helping others because GOD is so happy that HIS HEART MUST BE SINGING . LOVE you Joe. Keep going & never quit. God Bless you Joe .

I wish the US medical community took the course at the cross-roads after WWII to really study the psychology behind chemical dependence-escape through opioids.
What seems to be a common thread for those 30 percenter's, who beat the odds to stay sober in the current treatment paradigm, is "finding the higher power."
For Psychologists, this borders on the realm of a religious occult. Similar to such long standing institutions like the AA. But a truthful Psychologists will admit this is the same "cure" rate for those with "certified" DSM manual psychological medical issues.
In this current epidemic of serious drug abuse concerning prescription and illegal opioids, we seem to be very inadequately adept.
Opioids are nothing new to man. It's been around since the beginning of civilization with The Sumerians (3400 BC). Yet we have a problem now like the Chinese during the British Opium wars.

I singularly doubt whether the Pilgrim Fathers and their families suffered from addiction at Plymouth Rock. Not because of their morality but because of their necessity. They had a whole host of other problems, but additional was not one of them.
For addiction is the natural bi-product of plenty. Addictions stalk societal success like a dark shadow, be it addition to drugs (including alcohol and tobacco), gambling, food, sex and, let’s not forget, consumerism.
That’s why, as Joe says, addiction is the unspoken of curse of the Developed. We already see its progress in other societies right now. China has an increasing problem with obesity after centuries in which it could hardly ever feed all of its people. Mexico has the highest per capacity consumption on sugar on the planet (and a resultant problem in chronic diabetes amongst its population). Addiction, ironically, is a badge of ‘progress.’
Because of this, because it is a ‘natural’ bi-product of success (albeit national or personal), it should not be treated like a aberration. True, the law need to be involved. Yet because it is natural, it should not be treated as the equivalent of bank raid or a homicide. Rather, addiction should be treated as society treats road safety or fire prevention.
Why do you drive sensibly? Because the law tells you to? No, because, firstly, you have been trained to drive well. Secondly, because others care about you driving well (ie how YOU drive AFFECTS me!).
What am I saying? I saying that Joe is absolutely RIGHT. Of course the law needs to be involved but only at the edges. The solution (or attempted solution) can only be brought about by education and a sense of community involvement.
Thanks Joe for raising this point. Thanks Mr. Walsh and KLEAN Radio for fighting the battle for education and community.
