    This is a good video; informative and interesting. I think it would be improved, though, if it included the size and weight statistics of living bears (for example the black bear. the brown/grizzly bear and the kodiak bear) for comparisons sake. it’s hard to visualise the size of these extinct bear species from length and weight statistics alone, without context.

    • @Dr.Ian-Plect
      @Dr.Ian-Plect 3 місяці тому

      The grizzly is a brown bear subspecies, you are using a useless colloquialism.

    • @RaggedGothic
      @RaggedGothic 3 місяці тому

      @@Dr.Ian-Plect I specified exactly “brown/grizzly bear”. The term “grizzly bear” is more common in North America; the term “brown bear” is more common in Europe. *Both* are colloquial names for animals of the species _Ursus arctos._ Far from being “useless,” they are the commonly recognized name for _A. arctos,_ as used in different parts of the world. I've used them, here, in common, on a website visited by users from all over the world. The kodiak bear, also referenced in my original post, *is* a subspecies, _Ursus arctos middendorffi._ Specifically, Dr. Ian-Plect, you might try, when offering criticism, to be less rude and dismissive, if you expect it to be received better.

      "The term “grizzly bear” is more common in North America; the term “brown bear” is more common in Europe. Both are colloquial names for animals of the species Ursus arctos."
      - absolute tripe. Grizzly is *not* more common in N. America and brown bear more common in Europe! The fact of the matter is that grizzly is a subspecies of brown bear found in N. America. You, like many Americans (which is not saying you are American) are using the names as though they are synonyms, which they are not. 'Grizzly is an internationally recognised name for that subspecies of brown bear in N. America, thus it is not colloquial.
      "Far from being “useless,” they are the commonly recognized name for A. arctos, as used in different parts of the world."
      - that's just repeating your above part, which I've already corrected, only this time you used A where U should be.

    A 3500 pound bear on average means a 4500 pound larger version since there would have had to be large versions of the bear that lived so if 11’ was average then 14’ 4500 lbs could have been possible!!!

    • @ЛюбомирДрагнев-б1п
      @ЛюбомирДрагнев-б1п 3 місяці тому

      The problem is that these estimates are long out of date and should not be considered. The largest specimens of Arctotherium angustidens may not weighed much more than 1,000 kg, and even if there had ever been a 3,500-pound bear in history, it would have been an absolute freak of nature, not an average. The highest estimate of 4,502 pounds makes it bigger than an average sized Allosaurus, and I know a 2 ton bear sounds absolutely awesome and crazy, but it's just too unrealistic.
      In fact, to date, the Arctodus Simus is probably considered the larger of the short-faced bears.
