4 Speed Transmission Clutch Release Finger Replacement

  • I think we have all been stuck on the side of the road a time or two before, and this time when I went to pull in my clutch and had absolutely zero resistance all of a sudden, and just a floppy clutch lever, I knew something was broken- and it was not my cable. Upon a brief inspection, I found that the arm attached to the release shaft that comes out the top of my kicker cover was completely loose. So I opened it up and (not much to my surprise) found that the release finger (what you might also refer to as a fork) on the shaft was broken in two. So, clearly, it was time for a replacement.
My first time doing this particular job, but it was actually a pretty quick and easy fix! And thankfully I had the spare part kicking around so there was no waiting for parts to arrive in the mail 🙂
And we also have a little trick we do just to help keep that release finger centered on the shaft so that it is putting even load on your throw-out bearing and helping to prolong the life of that bearing.
I hope this video is helpful to anybody watching or at least entertaining. Thanks for being here. ✌️
And, anyone who want's to send me pictures of their bikes, you can email me at:
    redrider.canada.bc@gmail.com
    PLEASE SEND LARGE CLEAR PHOTOS!
1080p x 1080p is the MINIMUM we can work with, so please do your best at making sure your photos are large and not blurry 🙂 And send more than one if you can as well!
Only motorcycle related emails please - sorry, but I just don't have the time to engage in personal conversations.
    Thank you for your understanding.
If you DON'T want your bike highlighted in a future video showing viewers bikes then make sure to mention it in your email. Other than that, expect to see your bike in one of my videos!

Just started watching a few minutes ago. The replacement throw out fork you’ve got as a replacement looks pretty comparable to factory panhead or shovel forks which is a step up from what you took out even in unbroken form. Had a kicker cover like yours with the flush mount Allen bolts on my pan at one time and shitcanned the fork before I ever tried to use it. I run jockey shift on the pan which necessitates running the old style throwout bearings that knuckle, pan and flat side shovel used. They hold up much better on a jockey shift setup and can live a LOT longer when using aftermarket clutch springs like the Barnett springs. They’re interchangeable on your bike with the throw out bearing you’re running as long as you run the old style heavier pushrod that doesn’t have the end whittled down to slip thru the little Torrington bearings.
Anyway it was just a thought for an upgrade. I’m almost positive that your Dad knows about the throw out bearing and pushrod I’m talking about, he might even have one of the old setups laying around to give you a visual reference. My buddies 100” shovelhead got changed over to that setup about 25 years ago and still had the same parts in his trans the other day when I was at his place. Anyway, great video young lady, keep up the great work. 👍

Nice video and you’re absolutely correct about not giving your bike to someone to fix but to fix it yourself, because besides the fact that you’ll know your bike also you’ll get a stronger mental connection with it.
Btw, I wouldn’t throw away the old, broken clutch finger but I’d chamfer the crack places, put the thing on the shaft so the square inner diameter is sound and weld the thing with stainless, haha.

You got a slight breakdown of a part that gave you experience. I also like the old equipment, because it is maintainable. The engine and gearbox on my motorcycle have not been repaired for more than twenty years. And when I decided to repair the engine and gearbox, I was very shocked, there was a huge wear of parts, but the motorcycle never let me down. He's like an old soldier, he'll die himself, but he'll save his friend. My engine has a dry clutch, the rivets of the "squeeze" disc have been erased for a long time and the discs were just hanging on the shaft, and everything worked anyway. The caps on the valves were erased a long time ago and still everything worked and did not let me down. The old technique is an amazing technique. Whatever happens, don't sell your Angel motorcycle, it's a part of you!

I have an ‘85 Evo FLHTC. It’s 5 sp trany has the same style of release finger. The bike has 300,000 miles on it now and I’ve had to replace several of these parts. It would break in two stages. After the first feeling of something snapping the clutch would have a weak, “springy” feeling. After having been through one of these I knew to save the remaining clutch shift for when I really needed it. I could still clutchless shift to get to where I could safely work on it. After a couple of these I noticed that the shaft that turns the finger was developing cracks at the corners of the machined flat surface that the finger fits onto, and was twisting. I think the twisting broke the finger from the inside. From then on I always carried a spare of both the finger, and the shaft. I could replace them in a parking lot in 20 minutes.

The bike is a late 60s early 70s surviver. Paco frame. Maybe one of sugar bears early front ends. Gotta investigate that. Stretched, lowered frame. Springer of course. King and Queen diamond tuck seat. Still running the mag. 9 foot wheelbase. I want to restore it back to it's bass boat metal flake 70s paint. Gonna dress the part when I ride it. Mutton chop face hair, bandanna on the head, boot cut jeans with boots and a fly collar shirt with a vest on top. Gonna be a time traveler is my thought process. Some David Man type shit. Oh don't get me wrong, they can be a pain to work on, but nothing like todays bikes. Electronic this, electronic that, ride modes, throttle by wire and on and on. I call them throw away bikes. Cause that's how I feel when something goes wrong on them. Just give me air, gas and spark and let's ride! Simpler everything makes for the better bike. That's just my way of thinking anyhow. Another thing I noticed, but this goes beyond the technical aspect, if I may, that the hair up looks very good on you, it highlights the neck.

Yo Red, You are one in a Million. Most women would think a clutch is a small purse lol that comment should draw out some female haters lmao. Great Vid. Always nice having spare parts laying around. You Meet the Nicest People on a Honda Valkyrie/GoldWing. Keep the Shiny Side Up.

Nicely done. And thanks for the closeup shots of what you're working on. I tried to watch a vid the other day, and most of it was buddies elbow. You don't really know your bike until you get yer fingers in its guts. I hate anybody touching my bike.
Absolutely love that shovel, the little details like the oil lines, support fittings...groovy.
By the way, the two bikes behind you when you're at the bench. Is that another shovel, and a Evo?

Hey, thanks for watching! And yea it’s a 1978 shovel and a 1994 evo

Very nice. Now I've learned something new about my shovels (thank you). Now I know what to keep an eye out for if that ever happens to me. Great work as always. Tell Fatty we all say hello. 😁

Nice job Angel...I was pretty sure that was the problem too...they make a beefier throw out bearing fork...best suited for your performance clutch !! ✌😘

I love your copper and brass oiling system. Do you have a video that shows how you built it?

Thanks! And The bike was built before I had my UA-cam so I have no videos of the actual build.
