I started on acoustic guitar, but found bar chords were difficult to play cleanly. I then started playing bar chords on an electric guitar; this was MUCH easier. Amazingly, after switching back to acoustic, I found that bar chords were now no problem. So, I needed the intermediate step of training my fingers to hold bar chords on the electric before being able to hold them cleanly on the acoustic. The lower action of the electric made it easier to hold bar chords.
I think this is what happened in my bar chord learning. After 2 years with an acoustic that I could not get a clean bar chord unless I was squeezing painfully hard. Then I got the PRS se, played it exclusively when I first got it for awhile. Then when I picked the old Ibanez boat oar back up, I was a bar chord playin fool.
Buying used through guitar center can protect you. If it shows up wuth issues you can just return it to your local store. I have confirmed this with customer service and store personnel.

I'd say start with an electric, even if you want to play Johnny Cash songs eventually. It's just easier. Use the lightest strings you can. Only trouble is that your amp matters a lot, then. So maybe go for a non-terrible guitar and the best amp you can afford. (You might be able to get your money back selling a good amp if things don't work out. It's probably easier than selling a guitar?) If things work out well, you can sometimes improve an ordinary guitar quite nicely. (I had one when young that a friend who's still a luthier to this day gave scalloped frets. I never became that kind of player, but it's quite nice playing with scallops, and you're not going to want to put them on an expensive name brand guitar, so there are other advantages to starting out with "not much of a guitar". I suppose these days there's that Acoustasonic option, too (if it sounds OK unplugged). Trouble is there probably aren't that many appearing secondhand, yet. That said, this almost flies in the face of what I've done. I moved to an acoustic dreadnought copy with quite a high action, and for a long time with quite heavy strings. If you're playing an acoustic loud, there are advantages in a guitar that fights back a bit. (These days I can't play loud, so have light strings. They still fight me a bit.) It is possible to survive a heavy action. You just wait until your hands have become gorilla paws, that's all.
This is not a great video for absolute beginners buying their first guitar. 24 frets and pots for volume swells?? For Acoustic, get a Yamaha FS800 $200 and for electric get a Yamaha Pacifica 112V $300. Even better, buy both. The acoustic will make you better and the electric will build your confidence.

It's better to learn the hard way, that's what I did, it gives you more hand strength.
