Homemade CUSTARD RECIPE - Super Easy To Make!

  • This classic custard recipe is the perfect dessert to enjoy year-round. It's silky smooth, perfectly sweet, and much easier to make than you think. Serve it up warm, drizzled over cake or a fruit crisp, or chill it and top with berries. It's up to you!
Custard has a special place in my home. My dad (as a New Zealander) always preferred it warm and drizzled over some sort of cake. While my mom (an American) preferred it chilled and more pudding-like. And that's not surprising, because based on my travels I'd say that many people in the US think of custard as a pudding, while many people in the UK enjoy it served as an accompaniment to another dessert. I'll gladly enjoy custard either way!

I love all the versions. Warm, cold or frozen. Knowing how to make a custard opens up so many new recipes and options for dessert. I hope people try it, and with your version they should have no problems. It's such a basic recipe with so many flavor combinations that everybody should find a version they will love.

I LOVE warm custard on gingerbread! Warm is also good on warmed up banana nut bread. But mostly, I like it cold the next day -just on its own as a pudding with a little sprinkle of nutmeg on top. YUM!

Custard is one of my favorite things in the world!! I love mine chilled.
Your flourless chocolate cake is now a staple on our Jewish holidays - either when I'm cooking a feast, and need a delicious/addictive, easy dessert or during the holiday where we don't eat leavened foods (Passover)

I like both. Of course I never had homemade custard before. I have had warm vanilla pudding poured over pound cake, my dad introduced to me growing up. His grandmother served it to him as a child. Grannie was from England. My mom loves chocolate but then most people do. I can't wait to make this myself. Thank you. I'm enjoying your book so much. 🍧🥧

Next i want to try a baked custard using a bain marie inthe oven…how would you describe the difference??
    Edit:
Unfortunately my custard did not set up even after chilled😔 I followed recipe exactly...still tasted good though, just prefer a denser custard, so I will also try a recipe that's baked but also calls for a few whole eggs and 2 yolks

Those left over egg whites, besides being delicious in your flourless chocolate cake, would be used well in a financier (I truly think the recipe could be modified to work for you by substituting your favorite flour for the wheat flour). Love it warm or cold. Or like true brûlée- cold with the warm sugar topping - YUM!!!

Absolutely! You could even save them for an egg white scramble 😉

Lisa, when I was little, my grandmother always made my favorite dessert: baked cinnamon raisin rice pudding with a cold pourable vanilla custard on top. She's been gone many years and I never got the recipe, and I cannot figure out how she kept the custard from "congealing". It was an egg based cooked custard like yours, but stayed pourable when cold. Any ideas what she did different from yours?

Can other milks be used in place of the whole milk and heavy cream?
