Need advise, Chumley and I need to securely hold a one inch diameter bearing to surface grind a flat. We have the vee notched mag blocks but our fear is the bearing will catch and just spin at best, catch and we dead to think? What should we do? Thoughts are to imbed in epoxy as heat melt glue or wax would melt. The epoxy could be baked off. Any thoughts? Sorry Chumley an I are having issues with iPhone self correct. Dread
I'm surprised to hear that Chumley is still alive given his lifelong weight problems and poor diet. Give him my best. Not clear on where we are grinding the flat.
Nice vertical vise. Did you drill in dowel pins to key the fixed jaw of this vise? Clever to make the vise jaw bolt spacing, match the milling machine T-slot spacing. I tried looking for a vertical mill vise, they are darn expensive and small. So many times I've had to figure out how to make something rigid enough sticking above the Kurt jaws. This would fix that problem. And I have bolted things to angle plates, but the setup takes time. I'll have to play with router bits, as there's so many radius options. Have you found that cheap import carbide bits will hold up to steel? Sounds like you're running about 120RPM or so. Do the 1/4" shank work OK, or do you use the 1/2"? Thanks for posting this.
The fixed jaw is secured with shoulder bolts which double as dowels. Those are cheap Chinese 1/2" shank router bits, I bought a full set for less than $20. I believe I was running around 300 rpm, no sweat at all.
