Agree with you on the former point, though I really like the actor they did end up going with. Disagree on power though, the live action stuff is consistently lower scale than comics, and generally I'd say this is a good thing, for a lot of reasons, but when it comes to his character specifically it brings a lot to it if he can actually be hurt and potentially killed by people like the Purifiers, but still puts himself at the front anyways because he can take more than anyone else. It also puts him in the position where his decision not to kill people is meaningful, and his conflict on it makes sense, because he's not powerful enough sometimes win the day without killing. The more reasonably scaled takes we can get on comic characters the better IMO, as long as they're still strong enough to serve their narrative role (like Superman should be strong enough normal militaries can't threaten him), I think the weakest you can make them while fulfilling that the better, it creates so much more room for doing more with them. Without having to bullshit some weird meta threats or either have everything be destroyed all the time or just ignore the side effects anyways.

That's why when I try to figure out exactly where characters stand in a continuity I look at their strongest showing, and then work backwards until they'd be too weak for the narrative to make sense, I put them just beyond that. It helps if you can find a decent IRL explanation for things, like in the Luke Cage example his exterior is tougher than his interior, and sometimes peolle can be knocked out by really light hits if it gets just the right angle, so you can kinda fudge the shotgun example away (it was before his season 2 buff anyways).

I can accept that super strong characters may have trained to hold back against puny humans, or get matched against other super tough characters so fights can fill air time. But if you're in a rage, a get-the-knife-out-and-almost-kill-him rage like @11:05, the first punch shoulda rendered the other guy uncurious and possibly brain damaged even in a low gore setting where he can't just be constantly pulling his hands out of ribcages and skulls.
Yeah, that's his power set from the comics. It's a combo of super strength and durability, and an exagerration of the legendary tracking skills of Native Americans. I think his brother Warpath has the same skillset.
The only issue I have with his durability is that the show had buckshot be as damaging as it was when 5.56 Nato was bouncing off him. 5.56 is greater at penetration than buckshot.
