      Haven't been diagnosed, but recently had lesions in my brain scan show up. Anyway, I've always knew diet was important but had no idea how important it is for the brain! That goes for everyone too. I disagree with the dairy part, there is a small part of the population (Europeans and their decendants), that tolerate dairy well. Cheese maybe not so much. Im trying to avoid wheat products all together and eat more fish. Difficult when you are landlocked in the central US. Thank you for the video.

      Most certainly, you need the food that nourishes your body. Food that contains the most nutrient dense nutrition, which comes in all animal products. Check out dr. Shawn Baker and all his testimonials. There are people on there who have healed themselves from MS and all sort of afflictions. Be wise. Eat what your body is made of which is protein and fat. Not oils! Instead, natural chicken, or beef fat, or butter. The very best to you.

    Respectfully disagree. A few years after I was diagnosed I started the Ketogenic diet and ate 80% of my diet as fat and saturated fat. All things improved. My blood pressure went down, my HDL skyrocketed to the level that it’s considered protective of heart health. Then I went on holidays and fell off of keto and switched to a mostly vegetable lifestyle and over two years I progressed to being unable to walk. I went back on Keto again recently and as soon as I was back in ketosis everything started improving again. I don’t diets are a one size fits all. Mine works for me.

      As soon as I moved to low carb high fat (ketogenic) eating, my symptoms cleared up as well. I've been without issue and no further changes on my MRIs since 2015. I would never remove clean animal proteins and real fats from my diet (trans fats are not included in this, they're man made.) Sugar and ultraprocessed foods are the real bio-disruptors, I avoid them.

    It may just be splitting hairs, but couldn't yogurt & cheese technically be considered fermented foods (and no longer "dairy") , and thus important & good for a healthy gut microbiome -- which could help to decrease leaky gut.
    Moving on, our brain is a fatty organ as you point out early on. What types of fats ARE needed to optimize brain & mylein sheath preservation & replacement? A future video perphaps?
    Thank you for creating this channel. Be well.

      Thanks Kevin! Yogurt and cheese still have the saturated fat and the protein butyrophilin so it is best to avoid them. Look for alternative fermented foods like soy yogurt, kimchi, and kombucha.
      Yes we definitely need fats in our diets. Most of us are deficient in omega 3s and I will be posting a video this coming week on foods to eat to support our CNS. I will give you a sneak peak-eat whole plant based food that are rich in omega 3s such as hemp hearts, chia seeds, flax seeds, Brussels sprouts, walnuts, edamame, kidney beans, wild rice and kale!

      This might not be the answer you are looking for. I've been diagnosed with SIFO caused by aspergillus. To repair my gut, I'm on a limited deit. In a nutshell, I'm basically carnivore, until my gut heals. Then I'll bring back safe things to eat. Why carnivore? Because I've also found out that gluten tears me up inside. And while I'm at it, I'm going low oxalate, no lectins, and fodmap. You might see the complexity here. It's easier to just cut out all plants until my gut heals. I'm under the care of a functional medicine doctor. The only fats I eat now are what's provided in the meat, eggs, and butter. I'm not saying this is the diet for you but an example of a tailored diet based on my needs. I'll bring back olive oil when I'm able. By the way, the knee pain which I've suffered from for 10 years is completely gone. This is just on diet alone. Brain fog is lifting, and so is fatigue.

      Hi, Kevin! My doctor says yogurt is good for microbiome and it can be considered not dairy because the lactose was broken by the "bacilo lático" into fructose and glucose, sugar from fruit. So it's good to take a tablespoon now and then. But cheese, he said was junk food. It was removed from the food piramid in 2011 by Harvard Medical School. It causes cancer (John Hopkins stated) and plaques that can cause a stroke if in the brain and a heart attack, if in the heart.

      Thanks for watching and for the question. Any diet that helps us to remove processed foods and foods that cause inflammation will be helpful. So if we go from the Standard American diet to keto, we will improve. The short term benefits are definitely there. One of the good things about keto is weight loss and being overweight is linked to worse MS. Staying on long term keto may be more problematic though. There are numerous studies linking high saturated fat with worsening MS. Also keto is linked to higher fatigue, more constipation, and possibly less healthy gut microbiome because of lack of diversity in fiber.

I would love to be a vegan, but my diagnosis includes an inability to digest disaccharides and polysaccharides (sugars and starches). As a retired nutrition professional, I have seen, first-hand, the fact that dietary requirements reflect the old maxim, “Different strokes for different folks.” The only solution? Trial and error. The most important thing to avoid when having autoimmune conditions like MS are plants and plant foods.

    Have to say I disagree too. I was vegan, completely plant based, for 3 years before I had my first MS relapse, then it was highly active for the first year. It went into remission once I got on a course of Cladrabine. Since then I panicked about my diet and cycled through The Swank/Jelinek diet, Terry Whals, keto and plant based again. Symptoms come and go on all of them and are dependent on other factors, like stress especially. What I have realised is this. What to eat/not to eat with this disease IS inconclusive, save for eating a regular old Mediterranean diet (so everything is included with mostly healthy fats, plenty vegetables, fish and a bit of dairy and some meat) and fasting. The only micronutrients I am sold on are Vitamin D - take plenty! And Omega 3 - flax seed or fish oil. And even then, no, one size does not fit all.
    To anyone newly diagnosed, please, don’t be afraid about what you eat - just follow the health guide lines that are recommended to everyone on this planet: eat whole foods that haven’t been processed to shit, stay hydrated, get enough sleep, enjoy some exercise; move however you can. Our additional thing is to work with our neurologist on a course of medication appropriate for where our disease progression is at.
    If this plant based diet helps anyone, great. It didn’t for me, I was real sick after 3 years being a strict vegan.
    No single diet is the cure. We won’t have that until we know the cause. Of course, aiding to reduce inflammation is always a winner, so again, whole foods, plenty veggies, proteins, fats and carbs. Don’t stress about food. Have a beer with your friends. Enjoy that birthday cake with ice cream. Eat take out pizza with the kids. UNLESS you, yourself, really notice something happening with your symptoms when you eat certain foods.
    This disease has been a great teacher in listening myself. I wish you every success with your self care. And @EvenSoItIsWell I understand the trauma of this disease and the loss of control we feel. I am happy for you that you have found your balance. But science is always my guide, and we just haven’t nailed that to the conclusions you are stating with this. But peace to you, its a journey!

      @EvenSoItIsWell  11 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for watching Nellie! As I said in the video the saturated fats found in meat are associated with increased risks for heart disease and inflammation. As MS is an inflammatory disease reducing or eliminating saturated fats found in meats will benefit us. Also, modern farming practices have lead to increased use of antibiotics and hormones that may be problematic. The animals are also consuming feed that has many pesticides that end up in the meat and those pesticides are now being linked to more negative health outcomes.

    No studies have ever been conducted on the long-term effects of saturated fats. The National Library of Medicine says-> An updated systematic review by the Cochrane group in 2020 on saturated fats reported that reducing dietary saturated fats reduced CVD events but had no effect on the remaining seven CVD endpoints including total mortality, CVD mortality, coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality, fatal heart attacks, non-fatal heart attacks, and CHD events. Even the significant effect of saturated fats on CVD events became nonsignificant when subjected to a sensitivity analysis that only included clinical trials which had successfully reduced saturated fat consumption while excluding those that intended to reduce saturated fat but were not successful.
    High fat, low carb diets have long been used for reducing inflammation. Granted some people do have elevated LDL on a high fat diet, but there is much debate over the cause possibly being familial, hereditary, and much debate over how harmful that number ALONE actually is. It's common practice to vilify animal-based diets in favor of the traditional health pyramid. The same pyramid that probably got most of us sick in the first place. There aren't any successful long-term studies on ANY diets because there are other factors that were never accounted for in the study group's activities.
    I agree that whole foods are a much better way to go, but much of the food we eat has been altered in so many ways (because chemicals save the food industry profits) that it is still very risky. Animal products seem much safer. Refined grains, sugars, processed foods, and GMOs leave most vegetables in a less than desirable state for consumption. Be careful what you eat, and start out by avoiding anything in a can, box or "stay fresh" package. Stay away from fast food.... and most restaurants.

    • @EvenSoItIsWell
      @EvenSoItIsWell  6 місяців тому +2

      Thanks for watching and commenting. I respectfully disagree. There are many large, long term, peer reviewed studies showing that reducing saturated fats lowers CVD such as the Nurses’ Health Study, the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, and the China Study show that eating more fruits and vegetables and less saturated fats reduces the risk of CVD.
      I agree that the food pyramids have failed miserably. Unfortunately the recommendations were not followed in part due to the power of the food manufacturers, the marketing machines around them, and the shear volume of junk “foods” available.
      All this said, we are adults and can make our own choices. I wish you continued health and wellbeing!

    Dairy: I agree wholeheartedly with regards to regular, or “normal” especially the low fat varieties (totally debunked study funded by the sugar industry started that in the late 70s) BUT… we need some of those fats to absorb and gain a host of B vitamins… SO, I noticed no caveats such as grass fed, non-GMO, and hormone free, whole milk sourced varieties. Would you please comment and do some research in that area? Especially with regards to yogurts, sour cream, and cheeses? I agree regarding milk itself, but I am already a “lacto-ovo pescatarian” for several decades now. I do not have MS, but I have a partner who eats like a teenager! And I desperately want them to grow out of that!😅😊🙏🏼

      Thanks for watching! I believe a whole food plant based diet is best, but you are right we do need fats in our diets. Getting them from nuts, seeds, dark green leafy veggies, beans, legumes, and avocados are great. Here is a video I did with more information on why I eat whole food plant based.

      @@EvenSoItIsWell - So, the answer to my question is you don’t know because you just cut out ALL dairy, correct?

    • @EvenSoItIsWell
      @EvenSoItIsWell  Рік тому

      Yes, I have cut out all dairy. We don't need the fats from dairy. The saturated fats are not good for people with MS and there is a protein called butyrophilin that may be targeted by our immune systems.
      Based in research that I noted in the past video link I shared, I believe everyone would benefit from giving up dairy.
      Here is a bit more information about dairy and MS.

    I’m tending to minimise salt intake because (a) it seems to affect my cognitive functioning adversely, (b) I have noticed that often things recommended for Cardiac patients, are also recommended for MS patients 👍🙏

      Thank you. I seem to think we’ve “spoken” on here before - probably because I was curious about the origin of, “Even so, it is well” but does that ring any bells? 🙂

      We may have spoken before! I do get quite a few comments so I am not 100% sure. "Even So It Is Well" is a line from one of my favorite hymns. It reminds me that no matter what happens, I will be ok.

    One of the toughest things to give up is salt & vinegar potato chips. Oh, cheese too. Especially a good Dutch gouda.

    Interesting. Do you know a low fat diet (10mg of sat fat per day) is an effective treatment for MS? (and cancer. It stops a tumour matasizing). Personally I think cancer is a trigger for MS. It triggered mine, that and in addition to a urine infection.

      Gluten may cause UTI. Gluten/dairy/soy/sugar/GMO may hurt. Gluten may cause cancer and many other health issues once it hurts the gut lining so less nutrients absorb then cells are not made right to work right. Glands need cholesterol to work right. Poached eggs/lecithin in yolk may help. Fish oil/evening primrose oil/Krill oil/lecithin/CLA...olive oil/coconut flakes (limit) and more may help. Clogging the blood vessels with certain fats may hurt/heated oils may hurt. Low oxygen in the brain may trigger MS/cancer etc.. Nature's Way - Kidney/bladder may help UTI, but no gluten may prevent them. Antibiotics may hurt people and not help.

      Thanks for watching. The research indicates that dairy is not good for us. I make golden milk with almond or oat milk and it is quite nice. Honey shouldn’t be a problem.
