I like this fellow but not sure he is right about a few things. If Matthew needed to support his virgin birth story, Joseph would be superfluous altogether. Secondly, Joseph did not disappear immediately after Jesus’ birth. He takes Jesus to the temple for his circumcision. He takes the family to Egypt and back. He is there when Jesus goes missing and is discovered on the temple amongst the Doctors. Spong mentions some of these things later in his talk, contradicting his earlier part. The fact that Paul and anyone does not mention Joseph doesn’t mean he didn’t exist. Does Paul mention Mary ? A few holes his argument. Doesn’t mean he is wrong, but not convincing.
I understand where u are coming from. But that is the Jesus taught by christian pharisees, especially Paul from Tarsus. You must help rescue Jesus from religion. It is not Jesus who lied to you, but latter day fundamentalists. Ironically Spong was once one of these. Try to find Jesus outside organised religion and its rules. Rescue him. You will find an entirely different person.

It cannot be allowed to stand that Joseph is only spoken of in Matthew’s gospel. He also appears in Luke 2 and 3, and up until Jesus was 12.
