There are many reasons a person might enjoy a game. Being challenged is one of them. To think a game couldn't be fun for anyone without a challenge is just as short sighted as thinking all games should be easy. That said it could be very important for you individually for a game to have some kind of challenge, but the same isn't true for everyone and asserting it as such is as dumb as what Steve Shives is saying.
His example of a cheat code wasn't even a cheat code. Doing a posture to activate something else in game is just a hidden secret of the game. A cheat code is literally a code entered somewhere or series of buttons pressed somewhere (usually main title screen) that always you to break the game. Examples from the past. Contra code, invincibility, no gravity, explosive bullets, unlimited ammo.
Just because a game can’t physically improve you, doesn’t mean it can’t mentally improve you. Hand-eye coordination, timing, and problem-solving are some of the main skills you can improve from gaming.
I think it's odd that this guy keeps emphasizing how much he basically does not like anything in games (technical skill requirements, being challenged, having to improve to progress, literally interacting with the medium at all) and then says they neeed to be easier like what's the point you clearly just don't like video games just don't play them instead of trying to make them into movies or whatever where you get rewarded for watching them.
It seems like this guy wants to feel included, and if he cannot do something he feels left out. So everything should cater to him. It's just "thing bad, cause I don't like said thing. Therefore no one should like said thing, and it should also not exist". It's nonsense from an ignorant person that has already admitted being ignorant on the topic. There was nothing of substance or value in any of what he said, it could've just been dismissed outright. Since there was no argument to even rebut.
"There are some gamers who plays at highest difficulty and I don't understand this" That guy thinks every single game are meant to be always hard or unforgiving experience, however I managed to beat Armored Core 6 last year and It is satisfying and rewarding and it feels like I wanna play games at highest difficulty of how challenging they are except permadeath. (like in TLOU 1 or any other game that has permadeath difficulty) and now im playing Ghost of Tsushima PC on lethal mode, I've been enjoying it and having a great time.
Most story driven games have an easy mode specifically for players who want to experience the story. This guy really hasn’t had any experience with games.
Been playing a lot of Persona in the last couple years, many of the games have difficulty settings where the easy/casual playthrough option literally says you can "sit back and enjoy the story". And I'm sure it says the same thing in many games I haven't played yet!
Seen this kind of guy before, a mix of self important arrogance and the old "Games are for kids, you are not a kid so stop wasting so much time playing them" They tend to think like this then go spend just as much time watching movies or TV series as we do gaming and be completely oblivious to the hypocrocy.
13:00 if I remember correctly it tells you that you can play as Luigi after beating the game. I don't know if the game gives you anything for 100% as Luigi though or any other cheat codes for that matter, but I do remember those cheat cartages for the ds though.
I can understand him a bit, since for example, when I started to play Terraria, it was too much everything. I started on Classic. Every boss was just impossible. But I started to play more, more and today I'm on Expert. Maybe in few years I will be on Master. But it's mostly a progression. You learn how bosses works, how game works and what is in game. You learn to progress, and even if I fail with boss, I get up and try it again. And if I win, I get items that will help me more. That's the beauty of games. To never give up. If he wants to play easy games for fun, good for him ❤️✨
I can imagine a world where the gaming companies watch his video, and have a big parade where they make all games easier. And he gets that big goofy full mouth smile on and shakes his fists going "Yayyyyyy!!!!!" Like a muppet.
Yeah.. I like his Star Trek content, but this and his political videos are... rough. And not even because of his particular views, but rather his smug self-righteousness.
My lowest Halo difficulty is Heroic, Legendary is too hard, and normal is too easy for me, all difficulties and lack of options are valid because everyone has their own level they're comfortable at, also I knew about Margit's shackle before I fought him, but I chose not to use it cause I love the timing for the attacks~
15:48 I'll be honest, that's one kind of difficulty I don't really miss, the kind that just forces you to redo the entire game upon death. Unless the whole point is to just get a high score, I want to get back to where I lost as soon as possible to try it again. Of course, I'm not going to demand any game that has that kind of system cater to me, unlike this guy. :P
The way I'd thought about it is like this: a video game is like taking a test for fun. It tests your reflexes, puzzle solving, attentiveness, and so on. Different difficulties are like different grades of tests. If you want to take a hard test for fun, why not? Same for taking an easy test.
Everything he says about exercise from 16:26 to 16:50 can still be applied to video games, which tells me he doesn't understand the medium. Then again, him saying beforehand "I'm not a gamer" makes that clear already, just like him comparing games to a non-interactive medium.
I love cheat codes. I remember playing Drill Dozer for the GBA and after you beat the game, you can buy the strongest drill upgrade in the game to break titanium blocks. There is a titanium block in the tutorial level. Breaking it leads to a cheat code room for cosmetic stuff. But it also has a few extra goodies. A sound test, a code to start any level at max level from the start, and a permanent hard mode where you die in one hit. And it’s challenging! Very! But (using Wii U save states), I did it! And it was so great to do it! I loved the challenge! (Asides from a few bosses where I used the save states at.)
It’s not just about the challenge why hardcore gamers play on harder difficulty it’s also for the unlocking of rewards that they earn from playing them on that difficulty whereas on easy difficulty the game really punishes you for it by holding back the important rewards . The challenge in resident evil is by completing the game under 2hrs in order to get the infinite rocket launcher some players like to go with harder difficulty for that challenge amongst bonus costumes for the characters . And in the remake of the fourth game you have to do the merchants side quests if you want bonus rewards that’s including the DLCs as well . In the game Black you have to replay the game on all difficulties in order to unlock the infinite multi weapon as a reward.
I like a challenge, but I just don't like getting stuck... I unfortunately have a huge backlog so if I'm stuck and I've been there a few days I will probably play something else and then never go back to the other game and when I do I've forgotten what I'm doing so I end up starting over, getting bored, and just abandoning it all together. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to walk through the game either.
There's actually several layers of depth to this, just in subjective measures. Not just how much one wants to challenge themselves, but also what someone considers a challenge or what someone considers easy. Then there's the fact that even the worst player will passively learn from the experience of playing, and after enough time, even they might find the easiest setting 'too easy', and want a small increase in difficulty to maintain their engagement.
A hard game is always fun, I beat cuphead and that’s one of my greatest accomplishments 😅, but there is nothing wrong with a game with a mellow and easy difficulty
Game difficulty might be the most important aspect of a video game. Finding that correct difficulty where you are able to beat a thing at your wits end. It's magic when that happens.
To follow this guys logic. I don't remember the last time I watched a superhero movie that wasn't Deadpool. So why are the other superhero movies there?!
I guess I would just say that completing a difficult game gives you a feeling of gratification that is a big reason why people play video games in the first place. I don't want to press a few buttons and be told I won. I want to struggle and have that feeling of accomplishment when I finally win. People don't always have the means to put the desire for that feeling into something big like the guy in the video suggested. There are plenty of games for people who don't want a challenge. Some people just don't get what they need out of easy games.
"Im not a gamer but that doesnt stop me from having strong opinions about games." Yes, it does keep you from having strong opinions. unless your a gamer, nobody will listen to you.
12:45 Man, I remember banjo tooie; back then you had to EARN your cheat codes. You could enter them backwards if you remembered them, but the one for invincibility: KING, you could not enter backwards, it was the ultimate code for combing every level and world for their cheato page (collectible for cheat earning). If you couldn't find the last few cheato pages: That was on you. Also, reversed codes didn't stay saved: If your power went out they would be wiped and you'd have to enter them in again, incentivizing collecting the pages in the first place.
Ah yes, I like playing Street Fighter, Tekken, Soul Caliber, Need for Speed and other Competitive games on the hardest difficulty not because I want to be challenged, but because I wanna torture myself because I don't know what I'm doing. Whut?
Also playing games with a hard difficulty makes your senses more aware and allows to think on your feet when approached with problems that are difficult to face. So keep the real life aspect in your back pocket regarding difficult games and take it as a way to approach life's difficult problems with this thought: what can I do to deal with this immense problem?
His opinions are still terrible! He's not a gamer and doesn't get why people like a challenge. I would say one factor that makes something a video game is a fail state and the most common form of that is dying in a game (but is not just limited to it). this creates a challenge that we have to overcome and difficulty does play a role in that. without the challenge then your just playing an interactive movie. I remember times I kept dying on a boss, over and over doing a little better each time - trying different strategies and the game asks if I want to lower the difficulty and I just refuse it. Once you overcome that challenge is the greatest feelings you can have.
I absolutely love Difficult video games and if there not difficult/don't have a higher difficulty setting I'll just use self imposed rules. Easy video games are fine but the reason people play difficult video games is because sometimes it's to boring it's not intense I'm not planning my next move I'm just breezing through it sometimes you just need a challenge easy video games are good but sometimes we just need a challenge it's fun and beating the game feels more rewarding . In conclusion Hard video games = good, easy video games = good, this guy = major skill issue and is to salty that he isn't as good as other people at difficult games.
I want a challenge, but I'm a full time parent. I can't just abandon my kids to skydive or mountainbike for my challenges anymore, so games let me have a challenge while staying home with the kids.
Yeah, I wish more modern games had built in cheat codes. The only games that are modern I can think of that still have cheat codes built into them are the Lego games. Its pretty sad to think about.
Really depends on my mood. When I am feeling good, then heck yeah, I love a good challenge. Always feels satisfying to best souls bosses after carefully learning their pattern. Finally beating that Inphyrean Warden bastard from Salt a and Sacrifice felt so good. When I am feeling down, I just wanna kill stuff with no obstacles, so I play easy games.
difficult games are good cause it means i get to do something i enjoy whilst also still stimulating my brain. if you like a game where you can turn of your brain and blast through it at mach speed, cool, those put me to sleep, id rather the game be challenging on both a technical level, testing how well i can play, and a mental level, testing my knowledge of mechanics and how well i know the game, hence why i tend to challenge run games and not everyone feels like being challenged by life lol, not everyone wants to actually be pushed to the point where they want to put a gun to their head, sometimes i just want to sit back and enjoy something but not be asleep at the wheel. like i already sleep way too much, i dont need to be asleep for my hobbies too
If there is no challenge there is no sense of accomplishment, if there is no sense of accomplishment there is no reason to continue playing any game ever Video games help hand eye coordination and stimulate the problem solving section of the brain
Difficulty is subjective though "Normal" difficulty modes for example typically provide just the right ammount of challenge for most gamers Whereas hard mode is better for sweats And easy mode is for casuals/kids/non-gamers I just don't understand why where gatekeeping difficulty and making games that are only hard It's especially an issue with the racing game genre right now where most racing games coming out unless you play on Easy the AI is ridiculously difficult even for "pro" players
> You know what I do when I want a challenge? I lead my life. Everyone leads their life in different ways. One person likes to drive their modded to hell and back Mazda RX1, Another may decide to take a hike. And some people, They like to play video games, maybe at a higher difficoulty. The fact of the matter is that "Life" is such a broad term that anything can be applied to it. For example, me writing this comment is also an example of me living my life. I also strongly dislike cinematic games. Especially with the fatigue of those games right now. A story driven game can be done very well (Spec Ops The Line) but I hate games that are just riddled with a whole bunch of cutscenes that are overly dramatic for ZERO good reason (TLOU2).
i personally don't like soulsbourne, mostly because of the checkpoints and the fact you can't cancel even the normal attacks etc. but i never say they shouldn't exist. my favorite games are god of war, doom, batman arkham and red dead series.

And I'm pretty sure these codes weren't originally intended for players to use. They were made for the developers to use when testing the game.
Just because a game can’t physically improve you, doesn’t mean it can’t mentally improve you. Hand-eye coordination, timing, and problem-solving are some of the main skills you can improve from gaming.
Agreed and exactly, too bad this Steven Shives guy will never understand that ever probably
One thing not mentioned is replay value. If you cleared it in a lower difficulty a harder one might bring you closer to your first time experience.
"There are some gamers who plays at highest difficulty and I don't understand this"
That guy thinks every single game are meant to be always hard or unforgiving experience, however I managed to beat Armored Core 6 last year and It is satisfying and rewarding and it feels like I wanna play games at highest difficulty of how challenging they are except permadeath. (like in TLOU 1 or any other game that has permadeath difficulty)
and now im playing Ghost of Tsushima PC on lethal mode, I've been enjoying it and having a great time.
Armored Core 2 light work
Most story driven games have an easy mode specifically for players who want to experience the story. This guy really hasn’t had any experience with games.
Some of them even label it as "casual mode" or "story mode" for that
Been playing a lot of Persona in the last couple years, many of the games have difficulty settings where the easy/casual playthrough option literally says you can "sit back and enjoy the story". And I'm sure it says the same thing in many games I haven't played yet!
Seen this kind of guy before, a mix of self important arrogance and the old "Games are for kids, you are not a kid so stop wasting so much time playing them"
They tend to think like this then go spend just as much time watching movies or TV series as we do gaming and be completely oblivious to the hypocrocy.
@@poppyalt7427 in my experience at least with persona 5 even the hardest difficulty is easy.

If he wants to play easy games for fun, good for him ❤️✨
A game that hath too much challenge is not for me, and a game that hath no challenge, I am not for it
I can imagine a world where the gaming companies watch his video, and have a big parade where they make all games easier.
And he gets that big goofy full mouth smile on and shakes his fists going "Yayyyyyy!!!!!"

@@thediam0nddrag0n78 Exactly
15:48 I'll be honest, that's one kind of difficulty I don't really miss, the kind that just forces you to redo the entire game upon death. Unless the whole point is to just get a high score, I want to get back to where I lost as soon as possible to try it again. Of course, I'm not going to demand any game that has that kind of system cater to me, unlike this guy. :P
Agreed
The way I'd thought about it is like this: a video game is like taking a test for fun. It tests your reflexes, puzzle solving, attentiveness, and so on. Different difficulties are like different grades of tests. If you want to take a hard test for fun, why not? Same for taking an easy test.
Everything he says about exercise from 16:26 to 16:50 can still be applied to video games, which tells me he doesn't understand the medium. Then again, him saying beforehand "I'm not a gamer" makes that clear already, just like him comparing games to a non-interactive medium.
we need silk song to finally release so people will remember how hornet said “git gud” truly the most important phrase in hollow knight
In the game Black you have to replay the game on all difficulties in order to unlock the infinite multi weapon as a reward.
bro random Daniel Lord in your video did not expect that. Almost nobody references Hiding in My Room anymore
Basically as long as it’s fun, then it’s good
Game difficulty might be the most important aspect of a video game. Finding that correct difficulty where you are able to beat a thing at your wits end. It's magic when that happens.

i wonder why people play hard mode on video games maybe they want to be challenged
Holy shit, Leafy got out of rehab
"Im not a gamer but that doesnt stop me from having strong opinions about games." Yes, it does keep you from having strong opinions. unless your a gamer, nobody will listen to you.
It's a shame coz his Startrek content is super on point but it amzazing how hard he misses the point of harder games
This guy probably thinks pressing +5 on a calculator is an enthralling video game.
Wtf is the point of invincibility if youve gone thru the entire game basically
Bro sounds like he chronically complains about participation trophies existing and then complains when he doesn't recieve one for trying.
Would you believe I had forgotten about Steve Shives? Tho having been reminded of him, I'm not surprised at his bratty, entitled attitude.
Once you overcome that challenge is the greatest feelings you can have.
so plumbers don't wear ties than
all I'm hearing is that he has no perseverance and just gives up the second he can't run right through something

The point of hard games is the adrenaline and dopamine high after you overcome extreme challenges

He couldn't beat a Madden game on rookie mode.

sonic 2 on the sega genisus has no difficulty setting
“Im not a sports guy but I think that we should get rid of football. It’s too competitive and I don’t like it”
I absolutely love Difficult video games and if there not difficult/don't have a higher difficulty setting I'll just use self imposed rules.
“How do you do fellow gamers”
I want a challenge, but I'm a full time parent. I can't just abandon my kids to skydive or mountainbike for my challenges anymore, so games let me have a challenge while staying home with the kids.
I've been playing video games since the 90s video games always had cheat codes not so much nowadays

difficult games are good cause it means i get to do something i enjoy whilst also still stimulating my brain. if you like a game where you can turn of your brain and blast through it at mach speed, cool, those put me to sleep, id rather the game be challenging on both a technical level, testing how well i can play, and a mental level, testing my knowledge of mechanics and how well i know the game, hence why i tend to challenge run games
and not everyone feels like being challenged by life lol, not everyone wants to actually be pushed to the point where they want to put a gun to their head, sometimes i just want to sit back and enjoy something but not be asleep at the wheel.

i already sleep way too much, i dont need to be asleep for my hobbies too
You know he really sucks at video games when he plays Doom II on the easiest difficulty and STILL needs cheats to beat the game.
If there is no challenge there is no sense of accomplishment, if there is no sense of accomplishment there is no reason to continue playing any game ever
Video games help hand eye coordination and stimulate the problem solving section of the brain
Difficulty is subjective though
"Normal" difficulty modes for example typically provide just the right ammount of challenge for most gamers
Whereas hard mode is better for sweats
And easy mode is for casuals/kids/non-gamers
I just don't understand why where gatekeeping difficulty and making games that are only hard
It's especially an issue with the racing game genre right now where most racing games coming out unless you play on Easy the AI is ridiculously difficult even for "pro" players
> You know what I do when I want a challenge? I lead my life.
