I must write that I am so happy you did this video, and for the methodical way you captured the entire process. This has been an absolute godsend for anyone wishing to work on the 5L40e box. I have just finished rebuilding mine, and referenced this video for the entire process. Thanks again, It is very much appreciated.
One of my fav videos simply for leaving in the fact that you didn't pull the filter first. Kudos to you for leaving it unedited out. Had you not shown that, I would have done the same thing. So, thanks.

at around 3:23:00 ,i did a repair on the neutral safety switch, but the thing holding it, the piece right beside it, the rod fell out of its spot, and I cant seem to put it back together any ideas?
The snap ring that came out with the rear tailshaft plate... Where does that clip? Special tool needed? I did not see you re-install that. I have to (potentially) replace the rear bearing on one and want to ensure I have everything needed.
@@morantb thanks for the reply, but I downloaded the ATSG service manual and that "clip" is just a spacer thrust washer that sets the tail end (in and out) play it seems. According to the service manual, it just slides on by hand.
hello, I want to ask you a question I have a bmw e46 which has the 5-speed GM 5L40E automatic gearbox (A5S360R / A5S390R) and I have a problem with the gearbox I changed it with a gearbox that works well on another vehicle that has the same box all the same but just I changed the side where the converter goes in with the 7 screws that we tighten to 22nm this side whose box does not work well is that just because of the component can fault the box? because inside I see nothing electronic, thank you for your answer
@@morantb so infact I had a box on the base car which did not work the 4th and the 5th pass and default and I bought a similar car with the same automatic box I mounted it wrong so I break the front part where there are the 7 screws tighten to 22nm so I had to put this part but from the old box which does not pass the 4th and 5th in default, and the parcontre the 4th and the 5th pass but I have the fault when I reached it
I believe the pressure regulator valve is housed in that part. So if that is what is causing the issue then you will still have the old pressure regulator valve.
That's awesome, that is the only one video I found about GM5L40E assembly! Thank you very much. Just one question, what for did you dismantle such a good transmission?

Hi, does anyone knows is there any (especially major) differences between these gearbox in: E39, E46, E38, E53? or are they the same and can be successfully swapped 1:1 independently of car's model and engine? I'm asking, because I need to replace malfunctioned box in my E39 530d and I was wondering if I can swaps it to box from E46 320d? I have read somewhere, that there's no differences at all - besides shaft connection (which can be simply use from old gearbox). But what about Hydrokinetic clutch? Does it the same type for all 5L40E, or depends the car's engine? Many thanks for any answer :-)
A lot depends on whether the auto box was matched with a petrol vs diesel engine, the power output of the engines., whether the vehicle was 4wd or 2wd. Some of the differences will be external (input and output shaft for instance) other differences will be internal. You'll need to do your on research on the equivalence and the pre-programmed shift points... Or go and ask an expert who you trust and follow their recomendation.
@@grahamepigney8565 Gearbox tooked from E46 320d 150KM - only shaft connection was bit different (outer dimmension is bigger for 3.0d) so it was re-mounted from original box. That's it for differences. Plug & Play. Everything works and even computer is not required after the swap. Regards 🙂
I can not add a pic here to confirm what you are talking about exactly. But if you mean what I think you mean the torque specs for the PUMP COVER RETAINING BOLTS are: TORQUE SMALL BOLTS (240) TO 11 nm (8 FT.LB) - 6 of these TORQUE LARGE BOLTS (241) TO 22 nm (16 FT.LB) - 5 of these
