  • This is the 2020 version of the Outdoor Vitals Summit sleeping bag, which sheds weight over its predecessor and adopts a center zip design. In this current iteration, I expect this bag will punch above its weight class - it's certainly hard to beat at this price point.
    Basic specs:
    10D ripstop polyester with DWR
25oz (730g) of 800FP hydrophobic and responsibly sourced down
2lbs 4 oz (1.02kg) total weight for 0F lower limit

What are your measurements and did you get the regular sized bag?
Have you tried taking it to zero in just baselayers (like what is used to do the temp ratings?)
Also, how big is your head? I've got a small head, so the hood size is probably not an issue for me, but I wanted my guy friends to get these, but some of them have large heads and I may need to just keep looking for an alternative for them unless they have extra height in the bag and can make up for it that way somehow.
The 2021 bags are on sale now at affordable prices. They are just slightly heavier than the 2022 but you save like 100.
I'm a petite female and would really rather spend my money on something that fits me better, but then again...these are light and on sale right now.
That snagging zipper issue could probably be easily dealt with by using a special kind of tape made to stiffen the fabric under the zipper like Nemo bags have. They probably heat bond it before they fill it with down. It's like zipper guard tape or something, but you could use tenacious tape to do the same thing, or you could have a seamstress sew some webbing or..there's all kinds of things you could do. I think the weight of strips of tape would 100 percent be worth the weight penalty on a UL bag because the fabrics are so thin, and also, can you imagine jamming your zipper when you're 100 miles into the wilderness and having to choose between ripping the fabric and maybe breaking the zipper anyway or trying to make it work with a gap in the bag? Or having to get out of the bag quickly for some reason and jamming it. But then again, I'm just a beginner and maybe those kinds of things don't happen in real life if you know certain tricks.

Thank you. Interested to hear more after you try it out, or while you're trying it out.

I bought their 0-degree quilt and use a sleeping bag liner with it. I've used it in temps down to the mid-20s and it was very warm, except for a few drafts let in because I only used one pad strap to hold it in place. Overall, a great deal as well.

I'ma fan of quilts over bags except in the case of center zip bags because to me a center zip is the best of both worlds. Since I would use it as a quilt first and bag only in extreme situations to trap air I feel center zips are pretty perfect. I also love using the hood covering my face so it's actually good for me this way. It's my preference anyway. I sleep at home this way tho lol. I use an old style cold weather center zip military surplus bag as my bed quilt.

Which bag did you end up getting and thoughts? Also looking at the Antelope. But of course it costs more than twice as much as the OV.

@@ChristopherMarshburn Ok so I WANT the Antelope, but its been sold out everywhere for months! either that or the Feathered Friends Snowbunting if I can't get the Antelope in time for my PCT thru in 2023. Long time off but who knows how long supply chain issues will last, and then there is the crazy backlogs too.

How is this version different from the version available last year? I got one January 2019 or so, was wondering how this is different. I like mine, but, it doesn't pack down very well and it's shown me I'm a quilt guy! Glad I have it though!

    • @HikingNerd

Maybe you should tell me how it's different! Just kidding. I believe the 2019 model was a side zip with different hood and neck baffles.

@@HikingNerd Yeah, I definitely don't have the neck baffles, those look sweet! Your's just looks lighter ultimately! haha

Your next subscriber giveaway should be at 31,415 (31,416) subscribers...which I think will be at the end of the year! Awesome vid. My Marmot mummy sleeping bag is 0 degree 800f, but about 1.5x the size of the Outdoor Vitals summit

Hah I like the number. You know, I’ve never done a giveaway and I’m curious if people understood that to be part of the April Fools joke. Although it does benefit some lucky winner, it really feels like I would be buying viewers and subscribers. I prefer to know that I’m getting the right kind of viewers (there are “influencer levers” which I haven’t been interested in pulling).

I enjoy your videos but watching you inside that bag made me want to scream, to restrictive. I had to go with quilts to eliminate that feeling of being claustrophobic. Nice first look and hope it's everything you want it to be.👍
