His father's side of the family were in the New York area in the 1600s when it was still a Dutch colony (so literally _before_ the Mayflower).
His maternal grandfather immigrated from Italy but was an affluent lawyer.

Good natured hair tossing, like when you tease a friend upon discovering they have a Backstreet Boys album.
Maybe there's been comments that crossed a line that I haven't seen, who knows.
People that don't like Springsteen but watched anyway and irreverently expressed their lack of enthusiasm for Bruce are implicitly indicating they love watching your channel even when they don't like the artist being discussed.
I personally agree with your opinions much more often than not, but enjoy hearing opinions I don't agree with. It would be boring if we all agreed with everything or pretended to.
Anyway, congratulations on the 60k subs; I'm honestly surprised it's not 600k. I think your channel is awesome.

I had heard Springsteen earlier, at a friend's house, but the first time I heard the "Born To Run" album, it changed my life. I got to see him on that tour also, at Seneca College in Toronto, on December 21st, 1975, in the gymnasium, and to this day, it is still the best concert I ever went to, and I've been to a lot! Three hours of solid rock, and at times I thought Bruce and his band were going to blow the roof off the place! (Just for Pete - the second best rock concert I went to was a double bill featuring Iron Maiden and Judas Priest in Buffalo, also amazing!)
Tunnel of Love is one of the greatest albums ever made not just by Srpingsteen but by anyone.
It's definitely overlooked because it's sedate and reflective Bruce.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I love both Nebraska and Western Stars.
Even though I'm not a huge Springsteen fan, but I do own some of his music. I was 12 when I saw Bruce and the E Street Band in 1985. I'm glad that he went mainstream for at least one album, because it broke him to the masses and those fans explored all of his past music. He can still bring it live, if you saw him on SNL this past season.
To be honest, I am not really a Springsteen fan, but I've never missed an episode of this series or any series, and I'm not about to start.
Who knows? Maybe I will find something by him that I like. Well, I do like his earlier stuff.
Whether you like Bruce or not, it's always nice to see an open-minded Music lover :)

Tunnel of Love from the 80's for me beats out the river by a little.
I am a huge Springsteen fan - so I was excited to see this in the video list at my beloved "Sea of Tranquility". Pete is always a sensible guide, and I appreciate Scott Berry's input on this list. Their picks are great. Here is mine:
The 1970s: Hard to pick for me. I finally landed on "Born To Run," but "Darkness" is close.
The 1980s: Again, hard for me. But I landed on "The River". I love "Born In The USA" for many reasons, especially for the memories I have attached to the album.
The 1990s: Human Touch. - For me, it the best album he did since "The River"
The 2000s: The Rising. I was emotionally attached to this album when it was released. It has meant a great deal to me. There are songs that I play today from the album that cut at a deep level in the wake of 9/11.
The 2010s: Wrecking Ball: I love this album. However, I am emotionally attached to "Western Stars". The "Western Stars" album was my soundtrack to the summer of 2019 - and it was a favorite as it was a throwback to the music of the early 1970s (especially the great hits of Glen Campbell). But Wrecking Ball is solid.
The 2020s: Letter to You. I hope that there will be more this decade.

Heard a lot of people say they don't like Western Stars. I'm the opposite, I think it's the best thing he's done since the Rising.
I like it. It's just not a favorite. I prefer Wrecking Ball. There's a tone on Western Stars as a whole that sounds way more Americana, more so than any other of his albums. That being said the build up of the title song with the strings gets me emotional every time.
Agree, I think it's his best album of the last thirty years or so.
I quite like Born in the USA album, not the song it's been overplayed to death & all in all not a great song. Dancing in the dark, I'm on fire & Cover Me are my favourites off the album
I’m not really a Big Bruce fan but a friend of mine is. I am a big Metallica fan and my friend isn’t. The Black Album/Born in the U.S.A. analogy I used to explain the Black Album to him - blown away when I heard it repeated here. Very cool.

A very enjoyable show! Thanks gentlemen, for being so fair and insightful in your choices. I know Bruce is one of those "Love him or hate him" artists for a lot of people. I'm a singer-songwriter, who plays acoustic guitar and sings, and sometimes the harmonica comes into the mix, so I appreciate you going into this sometimes unpopular territory.

Finally Bruce...Been waiting. So many who dislike him have never really listened to the early stuff...because it is staggeringly great. From 1973 to 1987....so fu...ing amazing. Brilliant lyrics...great musicianship, He was so far ahead of his time that it's staggering. I certainly don't love all his stuff...but back in the day...this guy was incomparable. And in concert...never been anyone better.

Didnt care much for the 80's output,a bit too poppy and dumbed down for the mass 80's market for me.
The Rising was a long overdue return to form,proper Boss.
Thanks for some Bruce programming! I am a die hard metal/prog/fusion/rock fan but Bruce is my all-time favorite. Extremely tough to pick an album per decade!

Many great albums. Seen Springsteen live a bunch of times here in Florida. But like Pete, I have a soft spot for Darkness at the Edge of Town. Came out when I was in high school and edges out many other great ones for me. Unlike Pete, I love Nebraska. Good show!

There was something missing from Human Touch & Lucky Town.............The E Street Band!
I got the human touch better days 2 cd's on the day they came out and Fox News here in New York interviewed me at tower 4th and Broadway in NYC and I was on the 10 o'clock news.

Bruce fan here since 1977. Albums are great, but nothing compares to his live shows. Dude is a hard worker for sure.
1970s-Darkness (Probably should be Born to Run, but like many classics (e.g. Hotel California) the songs have been played to death. Really need to come at it with fresh ears to really appreciate it.)
1980s-Nebraska (I actively dislike Born in the USA)
1990s-Ghost of Tom Joad (I also lost touch with Bruce for a bit in the 90s without the E Street band around.)
2000s- The Rising (An underrated masterpiece.)
2010s- High Hopes (Although panned by most reviewers, I enjoyed it.)
2020s- Letter To You (Bruce and E Street back in form.)

I'm just stunned that neither of you picked Magic for the 2000s. This is a classic E Street album with the classic E Street sound and the first seven tracks off this are just stunning. The Rising has a few nice songs but he still hasn't completely shaken his vocal twang and it just doesn't rock the way I want Bruce to rock. Bottom line: I still think people pick this as a favorite because it's "the 9/11 album".

I might be in the minority here as a Bruce fan, but I thought that The Rising is one of Bruce's WORST records - if not THE worst. First of all, I find the music and lyrics very un-involving and not inspiring in the least. Bruce's passion, Poetry and lust for Life are sorely missing in action here. And hiring Grunge Producer, Brendan O'Brien ( this is the first record that Bruce didn't self-produce ) did Bruce NO favors from a Mix/Sonic standpoint. The record was WAY over Compressed, and the bottom-end was a mushy and muddy-mess. Especially disappointing, considering Bruce had the excellent ears and hands of Bob Clearmountain at the Desk for Born in the USA, Human Touch and Lucky Town; and those records were as clear as a bell! To be honest, I find very little of Bruce's output after Ghost of Tom Joad the least bit interesting or compelling. And I know a lot of you are in madly in love with Western Stars but that CD is so "sleepy" and uninspired it's like a Soundtrack for Nursing Homes. From Tunnel of Love backwards is the "good stuff' for me and many Bruce fans. Call me living in the past if you want - I couldn't care less. Quality in any Art form stands the test of Time ♫

70s - Born To Run.
While the absolute classic Darkness had a theme, the BtR album is 8 brilliant songs, perfectly sequenced to tell a story & is greater than the sum of its parts. Cinema for the ears. Meeting Across the River is possibly my fave track. It gets relegated to being thought of as the intro to Jungleland, but I think it is a brilliant song in its own right & just paints such a strong emotive picture whenever I hear it

80s - Born in the USA.
Easy to dismiss due to being a commercial juggernaut, but full of great songs. Just pips The River as it manages to do in one disc, what the other needed two to achieve. Nebraska I love too, I get what these guys are saying about BitUSA, but I still love it.
One of the best weekends I ever had was going to 2 concerts in Melbourne in 2014 and watching Bruce play Full BitUSA album in the middle of the show on Saturday and then Born to Run on the Sunday night. I also saw the full Darkness album in Sydney. I still regret not going to Brisbane and missing the Wild & Innocent show, though I did get to see NYC Serenade a few times a couple of years later.

90s - The Ghost of Tom Joad.
If I could’ve chosen the best tracks from Human Touch and Lucky Town, the resulting album would have been the winner. Hahahaha.... I have a playlist called Lucky Touch with the best tracks. Great minds...As it stands, there’s less tracks to skip on Joad. It’s a different experience than a band album, but definitely a rewarding listen. The NOT Unplugged live album with the 1992 Band was pretty good.

The return of the ESB! A time capsule of a moment in history. A cohesive collection of consistent quality tracks. I absolutely love half of the songs from Magic, but don't enjoy the rest of tracks at all. The Magic songs that don't grab me sound like they belong on Working on aDream, which I can't get into at all

10s - Letter to You.
I wasn’t expecting the past 2 years to get their own category. Most of this decade gave us albums of songs randomly pulled from various years. Letter has 3 old songs that fit well with the rest of the songs that all came together quickly. Recorded mostly live in 4 days. Has a spirit the others from this decade lacked. Ghosts is SUCH a great song. If I was to choose from the rest, I’d say Wrecking Ball edges out High Hopes. I’d probably want to Lucky Touch the best songs out of these two as well. I like Tucson Train from Western Stars, but not really into the rest of the album at all.
I never liked the production on Human Touch. I prefer Lucky Town.

I have tried, I even went to see him in concert (amazing front man), but I just can’t get into his music. Sorry, but just not my cup of tea. His voice (nasal, monotonous) probably is the biggest hurdle (almost as boring as Bob Dylan).
My favourite Springsteen album is " lm sorry l pissed the world off for 50yrs with my incomprehensible vocal style & my overrated band".

I remember just like Pearl Jam and Nirvana wanted to be Seattle's little secret but,made it big. Bruce was New Jerseys little secret until the born in the USA album. I mean the born in the USA album is when I discovered
Bruce.

Saying Born In the USA was trying too hard to have hits is a bit of an oxymoron since it's the album that took him from arenas to stadiums where he plays to this day when with the E-Streeters. I don't grudge these acts having one mega album even if I don't like it, if it sets them up to do what they creatively want. And that's what Bruce did - he didn't do Born In the USA 2, he did a relationships album with rockabilly, twang, ballads..he could have repeated himself and chose not to. I respect that.

70's: Born to Run (SUPER important album for me.)
80's: Born in the USA (I love it.)
90's: Ehhhhh
00's: Magic (But I could easily pick The Rising as well)
10's: Wrecking Ball
And just as a note, I think his latest album, Letter to You, is his best in a long time.
70s - I gotta go with Darkness on the Edge of Town. Raw, cutting diatribe and emotion . . But then a nice mix of uplifting beliefs, and the usual commentary on lower class working life.
80s- ooh uh The River or Nebraska . . I’m thinking The River today, just on production and how many damn classics are loaded all over that sucker.
90s - kinda hate this era, but Human Touch is the winner . . Ghost of Tom Joad in second.
00s - Magic. The album that got me back into Springsteen. I heard The Rising title track too much, and it kinda turned me off from going near the album. I ended up moving out of NY a month after 9/11, coincidentally. Couple tracks on Magic just feel like they fit or speak to me-especially “Girls in Their Summer Clothes”, that might as well be a personal anthem. That lead off free single on iTunes “Radio Nowhere” blew me away. Funny thing is I didn’t buy the album until 2014 😄
10s - Wrecking Ball with High Hopes just trailing. Love the biting commentary and broad range of tones & melody on that LP. So many great tracks-even bonus cuts-and yeah, what the hell is up with that cd digipack; more like digibook without the cool hardcover spine like on the Noise remaster series of 2015-17.
2020- haven’t heard it all yet, but Letter to You sounds great.

Honorable mentions: Born to run; The River; Tunnel of love; The Rising; and Western Stars are all pretty great.
The best Springsteen albums are albums of ideas. Ghost of Tom Joad is perhaps his most underrated. Western Stars, it's about more than the music, it's about how these songs about travel take you on a journey through the human condition, from optimism to failure to some semblance of redemption and ultimately to resignation. Born in the USA might be his most misunderstood album. It's not my favorite either but I think it might be his most conceptually brilliant, how he puts these stories of Americans down on their luck in catchy, upbeat melodies, which mirrors the Reagan administration's tendency to use punchy and positive catchphrases to distract from economic hardship. It's so sly, so subtle, that even Reagan didn't understand the irony! Few records are able to stand as a time capsule of the times in which they were created, as near perfect representations, and Born in the USA is one of them. Anyway, great show, guys. Here's my list:

The River was my 1st Bruce LP, purchased it when it came out. But exact same story as Pete, I loved the RISING saw Bruce on the RISING Tour 3x, and that was the album that knocked my socks off and got me to revisit his early catalog. However, before the Rising, Tunnel Of Love was my all time favorite LP and has got me through most of the tough times in life. Springsteen's voice has matured and gotten better over time IMO, those early albums are great but vocals sound like hes constipated.
70s: Born to Run. It's what got me into Bruce and it's a classic. Love Backstreets.
80s: The River, but Nebraska is there too. I think Bruce has said Nebraska was inspired by his reading of Flannery O'Connor, perhaps America's best writer of the 20th century, or at least second half.
90s: Human Touch
00s: The Rising
10s: Western Stars. But I'm into the whole roots thing. I like the acoustic and harmonica thing well. Moody and inspiring. Wrecking Ball is so close second.
70's - Darkness on the Edge of Town: Agree with Pete on this, some individual songs stand out as amongst the best in Bruce's career, the title track is amazing and Adam Raised a Cain is probably the heaviest song he's ever done. Hard Hitting.
80's - Tunnel of Love: Had you asked me a few years ago BITUSA would have been here but over the years I've listened to TOL a lot and I think the song writing is more subtle and moving than either BITUSA or The River. Nebraska is a bit too brooding for me. Deep Cut Heaven.
90's - Lucky Town: Not really a big fan of any of the 90's stuff but this has If I Should Fall Behind so it wins by default. Nice.
00's - Magic: Lost interest in Bruce for a few years but this one reminded me of why I loved him previously, the first 2 tracks Radio Nowhere and You'll be Coming Down are fantastic. Lovely Stuff.
10's - High Hopes: I like the production on this and some of the more downbeat keyboards and song writing, though something I'd listen to more in the background compared to his heyday records it's a testament to his talent that he made such quality so late in his career. Satisfying.
I agree with Pete on The River for the 80s Bruce album. Some of the songs are just so deep poetically, like Independence Day, The River, Drive All Night, Point Blank. Some songs are the most tender of his career like I Wanna Marry You and Fade Away, and some songs are just fun like Cadillac Ranch and especially Sherry Darling (the lyrics are hysterical).
Pete, one more thing. Since I have The Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River boxed sets, I’ve taken all the unreleased tracks and b-sides from each session and created completely “new albums” from just those tracks that I think flow pretty nicely. Let me know if you’d like to hear ‘em and I’ll get you copies.
I have been fortunate enough to go to lots of concerts since the late 60's . I first saw Springteen in November 1978 at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto , and it is one of the top 3 concerts that I have seen . It was the Darkness on the Edge of Town tour , and the E Street band were at the top of their game . The 4 hour show culminated with the classic Detroit Medley , and the entire arena was on it's feet dancing and singing along . The 1980 River tour concert wasn't far behind it in terms of greatness . To me it is like that with Ted Nugent.
He's never hid them. They've been there in his lyrics forever. Not sure how they can turn you off him as they would be there from whereever you come on board with him.

70's going with Darkness for the same reasons as Pete, 80's Born In The USA, 90's Human Touch, 00's As much as I like The Rising and I know what it means for everyone over there, I have to go with Magic it just Rocks more, 10's Wrecking Ball and of course the Brilliant new album Letter to You which is arguably his best since those 70's albums.
Like the Beatles, I didn't really get into BS's music beyond the radio hits until I was in my mid-20s. I started to drift away from his newer music in the 2000s and I'm not that familiar with his work from the last 2 decades. That being said, here are my picks from the 3 decades I'm familiar with (and own his entire catalog from those decades).
'70s - Born to Run. It may be overplayed but it's not overrated. It's on my short list of perfect albums.
'80s - The River. This album just edges out Tunnel of Love.
'90s - Human Touch. For some reason this album and Lucky Town (both released on the same day in '92) were met with a measure of resistance from critics and Bruce fans (and from Pete and Scott in this video) but I really like both of these discs. The nod goes to Touch.
I should revisit Bruce's post-2000 catalog and give them another shot.

Yeah, Born in the USA never did much for me. The only song I absolutely love on there is Bobby Jean, which wasn't even a hit. Another case of radio ruining good music by saturation
I quit on Bruce after Darkness. He fired the entire band and went in a new, kind of California direction, which is not bad in itself, but he lost me. Greetings, East St Shuffle and Born to Run are amazing.

I got into Bruce's music in 2012. i bought a greatest hits cd and then bought Wrecking Ball and went to see him twice on that tour. Then I went to see him when he did The River in its entirety. I was deployed to Afghanistan in 2013 and 2014 and his music kept me company. that's where I discovered The Ghost Of Tom Joad. special place in my heart.
Thermos flask in the UK. I didn't know till recently that Bruce played all the guitars on Sandy.
