- There's a fine line between torturing LEGO bricks, and building something magical. This design definitely skirts that line, but ultimately I think this is an amazing build that needs to exist.
You may have seen me build LEGO rings/cylinders, and you may have seen me build LEGO helices, but a helical LEGO cylinder? And although there's a lot of stress in this build, I've had this sitting in the corner of my studio for a few years now. It's solid and very stable. And there's so much more to do with this technique. : )

Note: The fail in the post-credits scene comes from a mistake I made. I deconstructed the build, and in my first attempt to film and recreate it I built it ~16% smaller than it should be (I used 6 segments rather than 7). I had a couple of frustrating moments in that reconstruction only to realize that I had build it much smaller than I ever would have knowingly attempted. When I started over with seven segments per loop I had zero problems and it assembled perfectly. LEGO plates are a wonderful and resilient creation. 😂

Alright, serious question: how long would that spiral have to be for you to be able to flex it around to connect to itself at the start? One giant helix?

Great question! I'd have to change up the overall structure to accommodate smaller cross-bracing on the inside of the helical torus, and longer cross bracing on the outside. So it would depend on how much curvature I could get in the final design. But I will be going there some day 😂It just feels inevitable.

The power of tolerance-stacking is difficult to comprehend, but brick-bending is an excellent visual aid.

@@keithsvenson568 Nothing built by humans is perfectly exact - or at least nothing big enough for a person to hold in their hand - so everything is made with certain tolerances. In the case of mass-produced objects that are all supposed to be identical, they will all have the same tolerance, but they will all be somewhere in that range (say, six thousandths of an inch). This means that some may be two or three thousandths bigger than the design specification, and others may be smaller by that same margin. If you take a thousand of the undersized ones and stack them, then take a thousand of the oversized ones and stack them, the stacks will not be the same height, and the difference will be enough to matter (big enough to see, big enough even to add one more to the stack of small ones to even it out), The concept of Tolerance Stacking is the idea that when a bunch of different parts all have large enough tolerances, things can be noticeably different (maybe even falling outside of specification for the assembly, even though each part in the assembly on its own is within specification).

The whole end part was stressful, every second I thought it’d either burst or shatter
I quite literally blurted an "OH MY GOD!" as if I was watching a contortionist doing something along the lines of dislocating a limb to put it backwards or something like that. I didn't expect that bend at all 😨😂

Has anyone else noticed that when you watch these pieces and modules be assembled you can see a slight bend, indicating a prior test?
I like the final twist at the end too! Trial and error and you show failures too!
That lime green is one of my most favourite colours. I like seeing it used with black.

I’m always amazed at just how well the bricks and plates hold together when you start bending them! I keep thinking they won’t go that far and then you magically make it work!

The recursion-like building steps make it so satisfying
Played with a lot of Lego, normal and technic, but I did not realise just how flexible it could be. Sir you have opened my eyes with your amazing constructions, thank you 🙂
I love how you always have a color scheme for your crazy builds, but I wonder if you could every now and again, just use a whole bunch of random colors for some builds.
I ask for a couple of reasons, personally, I just want to see how it looks.
The main reason though, is because, a few months back, I shared a bunch of your videos with a friend, one who does a lot of Lego collecting. They told me, the only reason why they won't do builds like yours, is because they don't have enough of particular color for a shape, for example, they don't have enough black 1x3 bricks. However, they have enough 1x3 bricks to do such builds.
I think that sometimes people inadvertently hold themselves back from creating something because they think they need very specific tools, even though they have tools that would work suitably.
I feel it would just be very beneficial to many, to see that you can create no matter what tools you have.

As a sidenote to all of the above, this particular build, how many times would this build have to be replicated to connect them all into one big torus?
I'm think it would take 64 segments.

With a variable length of the mid spikes (>7 spikes unit in this case, i.e. profile fits a normal curve) would it help bend the structure in multiple ways?
Pretty tight bending there, I was expecting a toroid out of it but that'd be just another few days of clicking pieces together.
I would never have thought that I would feel anxious watching someone build something from Lego.
That reminds me of those GIANT Thresher - hay/crop binder cylindrical mechanical things they put/use on the front of big tractors for mounding up hay/crops out in the fields. (Farming Equipment)

Could you have made it so that it doesn’t simply "cut off" at one of the "pillars" but rather that, at some point, the spiral stops ascending/descending, loops around and meets with its previous position to form a plane circle for it to stand on? Also, what was the reason behind not having the "pillars" perfectly on top of each other? Was it not feasible structurally or was it simply a design decision?
It's because the double-wide strips are staggered for strength.
Two great questions. It's always really tricky when you try to adjust curvature in a LEGO build because those adjustments have to happen in whole number increments (3 LEGO studs down to 2 LEGO studs). So what you describe is probably possible--just really difficult and would take some experimentation. And the building technique I use requires staggered 2x2 plates, so the cross bracing couldn't perfectly align--which is what my brain wants. : )

usually when i see a few pieces at the start i can make a few guesses on how it should turn out, this one kept me guessing. It was like watching a train wreck or a car crash... I couldn't look away. Excellent Video!

From watching a bunch of these videos, I’ve gotten better at predicting which way the bricks are going to bend, whether on the plane or into the plane. This time around I was pretty sure either was possible. Apparently it was both. This build was awesome!

A shot that I think would be cool to see on a build like this is @5:13 when you roll it side to side have the camera on a track and try to keep it centered so we’re looking through it as it rolls.
it looks like a tool design, like an archemede's screw, or for a dry-medium-processing-plant-maneuver: it looks effective for whatever means it is intended for; maybe moving gold-mining slurry through a mine-processing-plant for extraction.
I honestly do not understand how your brain can figure these things out! Every time I believe you have reached some kind of threshold to what can be made with bricks, you come up with something new and amazing... Kudos!
