    Ted, right on regarding interuption of the creative process. Here's a compromise: Lock the shutter speed down @180 degrees*. But, leave the iso in auto and EV down approx 03 to protect the highlights. DJI does a nice job of making subtle adjustments to the iso in 1/10 stop increments**. (When you have the proper filter in place and exposure lock is not appropriate because the light is changing. If you have the right filter, it should not push the iso above 200 . I.E. making a 360 flight around a subject and you need to get it in one take.) *If your shutter speed changes during the flight it WILL affect the motion blur and it will bite you in the butt when you least expect it. Definitely lock down the color balance. ** I have found this to be the case from DJI's consumer drones all the way up to the Enterprise models. This works for me shooting D-Cinelike or D-Log-M and allows me to concentrate on my shot-list and just "Play". Cheers man! 😀

    I gave this a shot tonight. I live "up north", so I started with an ND32, thinking light up here is slightly less intense. Nope, had to use ISO 100 to get 60fps properly exposed. So the first thing I did when I got home was to swap to the ND64, and now I'm set. The only filter I'd consider having handy would be the ND2000 for really slow exposures (photos/hyper-lapse).

    Ted my flying camera buddy: I nearly always agree with you. However, after one of my neighboring towns got pounded with a 5-foot snowstorm, I took my drone there the next day to shoot some of the snow-plow cleanup. It was soooo bright that I had to resort to an ND-128, so I could watch through my DJI RC controller. Normally, I - like you - just keep on an ND-64 because it handles nearly everything. Keep flying and I'll keep watching, brother!

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  3 місяці тому

      Keith…..HUGE QUESTION. I have this exact topic on my list of upcoming episodes I need to make.
      Before I answer your question….I’ll preface by saying this is an art, not a science: there’s many different workflows for different folks.
      So what I’m about to tell you is what I was taught by all my mentors and its great advice…. when you’re recording video….there is only correct exposure. Then if you want to darken it or lighten it for effect in editing….that is when you adjust. BECAUSE…getting correct exposure while recording gives you the best starting point and will yield the least amount of artifacts when edited.

  • @grahamniven

    Aye the K.I.S.S. principle really works. 👍
    Choosing your single ND filter value depends on the aperture of the drone lens, methinks you wouldn't want to use ND64 on the Mini2 which is more than a full stop slower than the Mini3.

    • @TedNemeth

    Ted - your excellent adventure videos always rock, and I'm bought in. Question: does the choice of "Go To" ND change at all if most of my missions are a combination of video AND still photography? I do a lot of sunset missions over a a marsh and I'm fascinated with doing gimbal down shots over the creeks. These can result in some pretty slow shutters for a properly exposed photo with an ND64. Also I'm typically shooting vid at 60 fps so targetting 1/125.

  • @Reviews4fun1
    @Reviews4fun1 3 місяці тому

    Kinda depends on how you’re flying - low and fast vs high and slow. I typically look at the cloud cover and pop on a filter to match the situation. Full sun midday 64. Partly cloudy 32. Mostly cloudy 16 or 8. Sunset time or full overcast - none.

    Man, you had me convinced of this many moons ago! Would love to get your feedback on my cinematic attempt with my Avata called Winter Stream Wandering. I used a little different method where I set the shutter speed to 1/120 (4k60 fps) but set the ISO to auto with a cap at 800. This enabled me to render the video at half speed (hopefully) making it more cinematic.

  • @upclosepro
    @upclosepro 2 місяці тому

    I typically use auto w photo outside of long exposure. The only problem I see with this is someone not using right nd or no nd and getting a 1/25 shutter speed in lower light or a 1/600 in bright sunny day. Even w algorithm trying to stay close to 180 rule if f stop is cranked up and iso is at its lowest the only other parameter the drone has is the shutter speed to achieve correct exposure. I'd also be concerned w the drone blowing out the highlights to properly exposure for subject when a better more cinematic look would be retaining highlights and having Milton's slightly underexposed and potentially crushing or losing details in shadows. Without running a more thorough test (I think you could have been more thorough in your testing) I can't give any definitive statements but I can agree that under certain circumstances this may be good practice

Maybe comparing none to a ND64 (my darkest) will better answer my question. I'm going to try it today photographing white churches. Great idea, teaching people how to do their own tests. Thanks Ted.

      For stills, an ND filter will only slow down the shutter to get the exposure right (if in Auto). Now slowing the shutter down may be a desired effect, if you want light trails, blurry background or something like that. It's all depending on what effect you're going for.
      But if all you want is regular sharp stills then no, ND filters will not help you get better results. In fact you may end up with blurry photos when you wish they were sharp.

      @@olabergvall3154 Thanks for the info, this makes sense. I knew it will slow down the shutter speed, but not sure of the results. I thought a slower shutter speed would reduce highlights and give the photo more detail information. I will experiment with 0 to ND64

    I’ve always used auto exposure, as you say changing lighting conditions or a directional change can ruin a shot in manual mode, unless you’re close to a subject at speed or the subject is moving at speed past you, it’s pointless. I use ND16 on bright cloudy days, 64 on sunny days & if midday in harsh sunlight, I’ll go up to 128. When flying around or over water I’ll use a CPL & that’s it, the technology is often better than attempting to manipulate the shot manually. Look at AI for example, it’s progressing to do a better job than a manual attempt, such as object removal as an example in photoshop, 20 seconds to remove two vehicles in front of a complex building with windows, provides 3 options, of which 99.9% of the time are good enough & most likely better than a manual removal of an hours worth of work trying to airbrush it out.

    Great vid. Do you use standard or a log profile ?

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  3 місяці тому +1

      I have a Mini 3 Pro and it only has D-Cinelike which is a terrible excuse for a log profile. MY TESTING….found it offered no meaningful benefit to dynamic range or color fidelity. So i always record in normal color profile and save all the time of having to restore the exposure & colors back to the way they were while recording.

    my only problem with auto exposure is when the camera adjusts the exposure mid video recording and changes the brightness too quickly making the footage look unnatural

      Hey buddy. Just assign the EXPOSURE LOCK FUNCTION to a controller button. So when u come to a scene and don’t want the exposure to change: just hit the button, lock exposure. When the scene is over just hit the button again and instantly go right back to getting correct exposure.

    Funny you publishes this now. Last week I tried AUTO with an ND32 filter and the resulting video was way better quality. I'm looking at ND64 now.
    Awesome video my friend. Thank you! 👍🏼👍🏼

    You don't give us any information, which drone you used to get these conclusions.
    You just say drone, BUT WHICH drone? There are drones with sensors from 1/1.3 to 4/cmos.
    There are also drones WITH FIXED APERTURE (usually from 1.8 to 2.8) and drones WITH VARIABLE APERTURE.
    If we're talking about variable aperture drones, "YOUR GENERAL THEORY = ALL AUTO" makes no sense...

    Your filter test is pretty stupid because it misses completely why you need a filter to get the 180 rule ... you need to move the drone.
    eg panning or following or overflying the subject. the 180 rule only shows on moving terrain....

    • @TedNemeth
      @TedNemeth  3 місяці тому

      @@TedNemeth The whole reason for the 180rule is to smooth out movement and create a trace instead of fast flickering images. There's temporal filters in various video editor that can apply it afterwords if you didn't fly with a filter.

    I love you Teddy old boy. I love your stuff. You teach so well. And you remind me of his dear friend and colleague of mine. I knew for 40 years. He was a wonderful, Videographer. He had that Cinematic eye.
    And of course I'm all for what you are saying. But I'm still fidgety. So I split the difference. It depends on what kind of a scene I'm shooting. And I might have, manual aperture control. Letting the camera pick the, shutter rate. Or have control over the shutter rate. Let the camera pick the aperture. On moving targets. So some of the auto exposure is working. While I set something. I want something set at.
    Then I will also generally set the AE, offset. Underexposed, 1/2 or 1 full, F-stop, under. So it never peaks at,, 100% white. You can't do anything with that. So I don't want to go over 90 or 95% white. And I will set that offset. So, No Problemo. Bitty bang bitty boom. As all I was generally shooting was, Live Rock Band Videos. With multiple cameras. Generally 4 cameras. In the year 1996 BD (Before Drones). In the good old days of, Real Rock & Roll.. In the year 2010 BT (Before Trump). When there was more in Network TV News other than Donnie. Like other stuff happening around the world. Aside from Donnie. When we were still a Country, United. Against other countries interfering with our election procedures. Not your next-door neighbors. Who also voted against women's rights. Your neighbors. And the ones siding with, Hamas. It is, now causing serious friction. And I guess everybody wants the world to blow up? So they can have their way! And because they've all gone Fucking Insane! And they have to lash out and attack each other. Between countries. Or between Americans. It does not matter.
    And so I think. These UFO/UAP's. They are having a, disastrous effect upon us. They have been sprinkling something upon us. They are observing us. Waiting to see who kills who for their amusement. Of course the not going to contact us. They want to watch us kill each other. And do their job for them. They just sprinkle magic fairy dust on us all. And we picked them up on military jet fighter radar. So who are they? What are they? What are they doing to us?
    I mean I think there was a Twilight Zone or Outer Limits or Science Fiction Theater episode about just that? In fact I'd swear to it. So another Science Fiction has now come true! And THEY LIVE.
    Yes I think it has all really come true. Not exactly like the movies. But damn close enough. Something is gone radically wrong on planet Earth. In the past couple of years. And what has changed us all? In the past couple of years? A little bug from outer space. Called a Novel Virus. Never before seen on this planet. But only on this planet. We don't know about other planets it may have originated from? I'm just saying…… Because I'm likely right. It explains everything. It explains why everybody is at everybody's throat. All over the fucking world!
    This won't end well at this rate..
