Watch the BBC first on iPlayer 👉 bbc.in/iPlayer... With up to a million hairs per square inch, the sea otter is the furriest animal on the planet. To mimic the care a pup would get from it's mother, the sea otter rehabilitation team at Monterey aquarium run an otter salon.
Gordon Buchanan has dedicated his life to filming wildlife. He wants to understand why we have such a strong emotional response to these particular species. Why a baby panda makes us go all gooey or why a squeaking frog got over 11 million internet hits. Travelling to meet these super cute animals, he reveals the surprising science behind each of the animals we love so much, starting with one of the most iconic animals on the planet, the giant panda. The panda's beautiful markings set it apart, but it's that big round oversized head that makes it so unusual. Although we find the teddy bear look incredibly appealing, for the panda, the size of its head tells the story of millions of years of evolution and survival.

The best thing about baby sea otters is that they have no clue they can float. Nyah, Nyah, Nyah, and then finally they realize they are incapable of drowning.
Unless that careful grooming isn't performed throughout the day; in nature by mom when they are young pups.

Yea, I literally couldn't do this job I'd get attached in seconds. It sounds awful being so close to a baby sea otter. AND NOT BEING ABLE TO CUDDLE OR PET IT! I an not strong enough, I would be hugging ut instantly

The fact that we no longer view these fluffy balls as a shoe and coat making material, and instead as an animal with emotion and psychology not too far different from us, is a testament of how much we have progressed
Sorry, I know this was from over a year ago, but genuinely curious... Why do you think our great grandfathers saw these animals as shoes or coats to begin with? Was it out of necessity (desperate to make money in any way)? Was it indifference? Did they not place the slightest value on animal life or nature? Like what would be the reason WE progressed and not them?
@@rloredo2348 a combination of all three I think. As to what makes us stopped seeing them as furcoat material, I believe David Attenborough and National Geographic played a crucial role in that. At least to the educated ones

OMG... I would volunteer in a HEARTBEAT to do this job. Next to my fur-granddaughter kitten, sea otters are the most fascinating, adorable, sweet things on the planet. So glad this program exists.

The shield also provides a reflective surface so the otter gets used to looking at his reflection which he mistakes as his mother.

No? I'm not quite sure as to the point you're trying to make, but it has nothing to do with how we "view" babies. It's so that the pup wont think humans are always safe, so they can survive in nature on their own.

What a fantastic job everyone is doing for the pup's. Fun fact : when the mother otter needs to leave the pup to go fed, she wraps it in seaweed so it doesn't sink..
