He's the ultimate 'I can fix him'! I've played my first run as basically just an Astarion redemption arc, like the main plot is just background noise to making sure this traumatised vampire gets his vengeance and freedom
I'm aiming with my Durge to have them seek redemption alongside their ride-or-die bestie Astarion. Both each other's darlings that will help fight each other's enemies to rise above. 💗
I don't want to fix him, I want him to fix himself. And he did. I'm just his emotional support infernal.

this is a bard's song indeed. you did not miss a beat in capturing Astarion as a character. I could totally imagine this being sung in a tavern after the events of Baldur's Gate 3 (and whatever Astarion storyline ending is) as Astarion himself sits in the corner of said tavern, listening to the song of his tale like some sort of fairytail/legend. Amazing work!!!

He really just needs someone to genuinely care for him, and keep him just a bit in check.
To tell him that what he needs isn't nesseccarily what he wants.
In the end, he only wants power so he can finally feel safe, so he won't be scared anymore.
Disagree on that, he doesn't know how to truly accept what he wants for himself. He spent so much time without being able to make a choice he just doesn't beleive in his free will. It's not that he wants power per say, he thinks it will grant him safety from all the pain of the past. He is blinded by fear, but it you, through friendship or romance who will guide him to grow the confidence of choosing for himself. You do not control him nor choose for him what's best, if you think so, you're no better than Cazador and he has only changed from one master to an another. If you do choose the spawn ending as you romance him, you have the emphasis on what He wants. What He feels. You may feel in charge because you're the player and you choose where the story goes, but if you truly care for him, you only make choices that let him be able to express his feelings and aknowledge his agenda. I love Astarion so much
@@rosevalety3408 But you actually DO control him a bit, just enpugh to steer him away from the violence. You protect him at times, even speak for him (Moonrise tower with the drow, which is the turning point of the romance) and tell him what to do/not do. He does learn to step up for himself with having you keep him safe long enough for himself to develop and even step up for others on his own accord. Turning down the Ascendent vappire part is the last push he needed too be mentally free.
But the scene on the graveard ('good route'), i'm pretty sure that was all him considering how much he was bumbling about there. :D
(Also it was probably the sweetest romance scene i've seen from many, many games)
I really can't express how happy it makes me to see 3 people who ACTUALLY see and understand Astarion and his situation. I've been seeing so many bad takes on his character and story, and it's been disheartening.
So yeah, just wanted to thank you guys for showing some emotional and general maturity and intelligence
@@xNarttu I admit, my friend kinda pushed me into romancing him at first. I was pretty put off by the 'let's go hurt somebody'-attitude he rocks most of the time at first. Also had a real long reconsidering phase when i've seen Halsin the first time.
Somewhere middle of act 2 i decided that this man definitely needs a leash to be safe from himself (his idea with asking Raphael was more concerning than anything else, luckily he was sensible enough not to trade one master for another).
But after having met the drow in the tower, i did start to get hooked real bad, after he thanked me and just kept looking like some lost puppy. (a lost killer puppy i guess. He surely kept my neutral good druid on her toes. But it's kinda extra funny if the woman is bigger than him when hugging and he can barely reach her shoulders :D)
After i finish this run, i'll try two runs next to eahc other with the Durge. One Durge that tries to resist and one that goes full evil. I wanna see how Astarion (and the others) react to that. Afaik Durge and our little Star have the same writer and that there should be an extra amount of dialogue between them, so i'm curious what BG3 has in store for us.
Sorry for the essay, but this game (And Astarion) is seriously amazing. :D

I’m doing things with my evil D’Urge first and then going along with resist D’Urge afterwards, because doing the evil things is HARD for me. Legit almost got teary raiding the grove, it felt horrible.
But yeah, Astarion’s character progression and the romance with him (not ascended) is by far my favourite of all the games with romance that I’ve ever played. He’s such a fantastically written character, that even my partner, who doesn’t like vampires in general and doesn’t like personalities like Astarion’s, tolerates him and is willingly going through his personal quests. Usually my partner would just skip the personal quests of characters he doesn’t like.
Me though, Astarion had me from the moment he held my poor Spore Druid at knife point after the nautiloid crash. I started her as neutral good, but with Astarion’s influence she ended up more chaotic good by the end, they were a power couple 🤣👌🏻

I'm completely obsessed with Astarion, and yes he can change if you don't make him ascend and romance him, ascending him is the biggest mistake you can make with him, as you think you are saving him, but you just lose him completely instead, quite sad.
I'm just wondering if there couldn't have been a way in between. He could have drunk Cazador's blood and still remained himself, I think it would be nice if Larian had planned that as a hidden third option. Astarion deserved this after 200 years of torture and saving the world.
I was thinking of using his bite attack against Cazador to free him.... but then I remember he's held back throughout the whole fight 🙃
@@5Demona5 after my second play through i found that you can "help" him, as if he was downed.
@@Umah666drinking Cazador’s blood will not change him. The full vampire being drunk must be willing.
That said, the ritual is a break from lore and could have provided a less traditional type of full vampire. One not yolked by the effects of, “Dark Desires.”
@@Umah666 I think if you have him ascend when you play him as the main character he can choose to stay nice if you choose the good option, I think.
I really hope the voice actor for Astarion and his writers hear this. It is amazing! 💚 Cried a little, I felt like I was listening to it in a tavern in Baldur's Gate.

It is known that Astarion uses you in the very start. And to be honest I would too if I was in his position. He tries to push you away, not get close. He uses his body to lure you in and keep you under his grasp. But, he failed at the one thing he told himself not to do, fall in love with you. He is always using his words and attempts to hide behind this mask that you shatter.
And when it asks, "Will your proudly be a pawn, in the vampires game."
That is the best part because to Astarion you ARE a pawn that he uses for protection. Like Chess. All the pawns must protect the king. He, being the king. You and the others, being the Pawn in a game to be free from Casador.
To me, Astarions trauma and as you get close to him, is so well written. He is a hard character to romance, but it felt so worth it. His story, his reactions - its so good. Especially if you Pay the Dark Urge. You get a side to him that you don't get when playing a regular character.

This song instantly gave me chills. Tempts me to open BG3 back up and run through just to get Astarion's full story. Thank you so much for making and sharing this, Jonathan-- the vibe of this song is so awesome. It has a raw taste of feral fury behind the elegance and hauteur that really comes out during the chorus, showing you some of that bitter anger and resentment under the surface.
