- DIY Universal Oil Cooler Install. Should You Install An Oil Cooler? In this video we are going to be installing and engine oil cooler on my Mustang. Oil coolers are a worthwhile upgrade if you plan on driving your vehicle hard. Doing track days or perhaps adding lots of power with a turbo. Oil coolers are also a great upgrade if you plan on doing a lot of towing.
I'm going to be installing an air to oil oil cooler in this video. Oil coolers also come in the oil to water type. Air to oil oil coolers work just like a radiator, air passes over a heat exchanger which cools the oil. The water to oil type uses engine coolant to cool the engine oil.

@@RepairGeek Excellent. Thank you.
Which sandwich adapter is for a 03 mustang gt?
An ancient video of Linus Tech Tips installing an oil cooler on a Mustang
We must protect this relic.
I wanted to thank you for putting this video up. I am considering putting an oil cooler on my 97 Ford ranger. It's obviously not as demanding as a muscle car for cooling, but I live in Southern Arizona and it gets hot as hell in the summer and I think it would be good to get one to keep it from overheating. A lot of the other videos on UA-cam about oil coolers did not go into very good detail as your video did to give me an idea of what to expect with my own installation. Thank you so much for putting the effort into this video because it will really help me with my future project.
Nice installation, and kudos for doing your homework before deciding whether or not it would be beneficial given your car’s anticipated cooling needs. Banks gauge works great to display your new actual oil temp in/out delta values. Have a super honeymoon and Laguna Seca track day!!
Your videos never disappoint! Thanks!
Your video is awesome. The tip about the hydraulic hose wrap is great.
Very well put together video. Great job man
Ur the only one that shows the sandwich installation thx bro 🇺🇸
Great idea and Congrats on the Nuptials!
I am building a 66 Mustang GT-350 Replica. I will have a 331 small block for power. Estimate 475 HP. Aluminum Radiator and planning to run a universal oil cooler in the front center where the license plate would be. Thanks for making this video. I subscribed.
Side note. I have a 69 Mach1 with a 428 Super Cobra Jet Oil Cooler with Ford factory parts. It was very expensive but it works.
I have a 65 Shelby 427 Cobra with a 427 side oiler (now an aluminum block). It also has a oil cooler. I have tracked it many times in the past.
Super informative. I’ve been thinking about adding a engine oil, transmission fuild and power steering fluid coolers to my grand Cherokee. The oem ones just aren’t good for as hard as I push it. This video had helped cement my decision to do it.
Make vids. ;)
Great video and very helpful - thank you
Thank you for a very informative video.
Congrats on getting engaged! Sounds like a great trip for you and the significant other, soon to be wife!
thank you, love your vids. very understandable even for clueless like me

great job. thank you
I've seen zip ties rub through rubber lines before. I hope this does not happen to you. Much respect for convincing your wife to do a honeymoon at Laguna Seca!
Her idea!
@@RepairGeek you chose wisely then!
Good stuff, thanks
Thanks for the video. Unfortunately, my oil cooler has T/U on me, but due to the age of the car, I'm unable to source parts or replacements. Hence, I will need to fit an oil cooler. My biggest problem is finding a garage or mechanic who is willing to undertake the job.
I daily drive a 66 Chevy pickup with a 350 Buick and I do A LOT of towing. When I'm on the hiway the oil pressure gets down to 28psi since the oil gets too hot. So I figured I should probably rock an oil cooler.
I recommend you the mishimoto radiator with reins performance 170* thermostat, also flexalite blackmagic fan with shroud its a one single speed fan using the high speed wire but with the sct tuner you set your fan speeds to low speed 170 even tho its not going to be connected and your high speed to 194*on and it will turn off at 189*.
About to install preformance equipment in my corolla ae101 93 , because I want to remodel the old stuff and to be better for longer trips
nice video, perhaps would you have any knowledge if there is a Upgrade for a OilCooler for a 2008 Saab 9-3 Aero V6?
im about to add the mishimoti trans cooler with the fan. We drove to west PA last year about 5.5 hours and the tranny was smoking u could feel the heat inside the car from the tunnel. previous owner installed a power steering cooler like u did i think. im gonna get under there and take a better look. any advice on the trans cooler?
🔧🔩👏 Another great, professional-looking how-to video from you. You need to give weekend seminars to the legions of UA-cam yahoos that don't know how to make a video this clear and useful. Your videos always feature great camera work (on a tripod), clear explanation, and no annoying hip-hop/rap/metal “music" blasting away in the background. Whenever I hear that I move on to find a better video, like yours. Thanks for taking the time to post!
Nice install! My only concern is it looked like one of the lines was basically touching the sway bar? Looks like when the suspension is compressed, the bar will actually move away from the line. Just thought I'd mention it anyways. I'd be more concerned about it tapping the line repeatedly and causing a fitting to loosen than actually wearing through.
It is close but it's not touching at full droop. I have about a 1/2 to 1/4 inch clearance at full droop. When I put the weight on the suspension the clearance gets much bigger because the bar rotates down as the suspension is compressed. I've been checking for leaks or issues after every drive and so far after about 250 miles I haven't had anything touch but I did have a couple small drips I needed to address but so far so good. 😅
@@RepairGeek Nice! I figured you had it all sorted, but I've seen very smart people make simple mistakes before, hahaha. Hope it does well for you. :D
Do you recommend this cooler for a taxi car, that is running 9 to 10 hrs a day here in the semi desert.
i really want to know how both line from oil cooler to sandwich adapter should be connected.
Hi
Could u plz share a link for a nice power steering oil cooler that can work for pressure around 100 Bars!
Great video, is the oil cooler placement in front of the condenser, bad for the condenser?
The car has no issues with the AC. This setup works great.
I have a Honda civic 2012 coupe everything is factory designed besides an cold air intake (I dint tow anything )I was wondering if I need to get an transmssion cooler for the hot temp. In south texas Or if my car is safe enough to handle it via it’s build design? Any thing helps
seems like all the heat from the oil goes to the coolant anyway, and a.c. im going to install one on my foxbody off the to side
Will this work on a manual?
As I’m not sure 100 sure if yours is an automatic.
Hello there I have questions . my car engine work for 15 hours continuesly. And 150% overload So on afternoon specialy 1pm - 10pm my engine will be hot. So can u recommend oil cooler
Idk of my lines are cheap or the fitting. But when I screw my fitting onto the hose, it be wanting to leak
Do they work on naturally aspirated engine???
You can get the steeda front crash bar delete
I notice the lines run right next to each other (nearly touching). Wouldn't it be better to separate them since 1 side is hot 🔥 and 1 is cooled?
The amount of heat transfer between the hoses that are next to one another is so small it's not worth worrying about.
When you are doing an oil change, the oil that is in the cooler is missed and left behind? Or do you/can you drain or flush the oil in cooler?
You can flush the cooler but what I've found is the way mine is setup, because the cooler is higher than the oil filter, when I remove the oil filter the cooler drains into the pain as well.
Will adding an oil cooler to a high mileage truck that burns oil be beneficial? Thank you.
No sorry it wont. That's an internal mechanical issue. You may have luck adding an oil additive like motor honey or Lucas to thicken up the viscosity.
Given the lessened cooling capacity because of what makes the ZR2 more offroad capable, would you consider/recommend adding this to your Colorado?
So my truck has a water to oil style cooler on it from the factory like what I spoke about towards the beginning. I monitor oil temps among about 40 other things regularly with my idash. I've never had my oil temps go over 205 granted I don't tow all the time but right around 200 is ideal because your able to boil off any moisture that collects in the oil. Highway driving makes the oil about 20 degrees hotter than putting around town in that particular truck. What this mustang is going to do on the highway as far as temps with this cooler installed I'm not sure yet. This mustang had nothing for oil cooling.
If I add any cooler to my truck it's going to be transmission 100%.
@@RepairGeek (fellow ZR2 owner) maybe a transmission cooler could be the next video 😉
@@red6743 I've been toying the idea. 40k service is going to be my next truck related video. Basically changing all the fluids.
@@RepairGeek I look forward to that one! I just changed the transmission fluid and filter at 50k.
Got a question about the power steering cooler… was it pretty straight forward to connect or did you have to modify the lines it connected to?
The old cooler attached to 2 rubber lines behind the core support. I just removed the stock cooler, used to barb fittings on the stock rubber lines and installed the new cooler.
@@RepairGeek gotcha thanks a bunch…currently getting a cage put in my car and dont have a car for reference right now to see how it connects lol
I see you replaced the power steering cooler tube with a finned cooler? Was that a direct swap or did you have to adapt it? You have any part numbers?
The factory cooler attaches to 2 rubber lines behind the core support. I used 2 barb fittings and some additional rubber hose to attach the new cooler.

On turbo application, should the oil cooler be plumbed in before or after the turbo?
Before. The cooler needs pressurized oil.
So then for turbo cars, installing the thermostatic valve at the oil filter is recommended?
What is the part number for that banks gauge?❤
I'm going to have a complete separate upload on the gauge.
So once u add a after market oil cooler is the factory one still in use or no? My oil temp Nd engine temp sensors are on my factory oil filter adapter
It depends on how to connect the cooler to the system. I'm not familiar with that particular car.
@@RepairGeek i have a lincoln ls
What is the part number for that banks gauge?
amzn.to/3vysrdQ
Would this oil cooler be decent for a C6 Corvette?
Sure as long as you're getting good airflow though it.
I thought the radiator took the oil up in temperature so it at running temp in the cold. Radiator is not going to cool it.
That plate is sweet
Those temp degrees are °F right?
Yes.
Hey did this effect your oil pressure any?
I have about 1-2 psi drop across the cooler with the thermostat closed sending 100% of the oil through the cooler.
@@RepairGeek not bad at all. Thank you. I was worried about pressure dropping
Wait... did he install it with the M logo facing the radiator?
Yep, I'm not looking at some logo every time I look at the front of my car.
@@RepairGeek it looks so good thoughhhhh
My biggest fear of installing an additional oil cooler to an engine that didn't come with an oil cooler from the factory itself is that, I heard that an additional oil cooler will totally mess up the pre engineered amount of oil pressure throughout the entire engine plumbings including the critical components such as crank oil journals and other passage ways and will pre-maturely if not immediately seize the engine by creating an oil starvation.
Just fit the largest lines and cooler possible to decrease the pressure drop. My pressure drop was about 1 psi.
@@RepairGeek So to eliminate fatal engine failures, a tight sealing fittings is all that matters?
Stop looking for an argument and actually try to comprehend my original reply. -10AN or 5/8th's lines have plenty of volume for a typical V8.
@@RepairGeek Sure, thank you so much for answering my questions. I'm just a little anxious. My engine is an inline 4 (motorcycle) which is significantly heating up a lot after rebuilding it from the OE Benelli authorized service center itself. The new engine was built at the service center part by part and didn't come as a whole from the manufacturer. As per them, there is nothing wrong with the new engine but to me it defnitley heats up a lot than the previous 8,000 mile old engine. Hence contemplating on adding an oil cooler against the dealerships advice.😩
How are you measuring these temperatures? I'm not familiar with bikes.

Engine oil
Try to tell Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Castrol, Valvoline and The Ford Motor Company they are all using the wrong terminology as well. Haha just messing with you.
You contradicted yourself. You said the oil does not go to the cooler at 185° and below 3:32 and then you show the oil below 185° 15:50 being cooled when you just said the oil is bypassed at 185° and below. Is anybody paying attention?
The bypass does not block flow to the cooler. When the thermostat is below temperature some of the oil is bypassing the cooler and some is going through the lines and the cooler. The lines to the cooler are always open and receiving some flow no matter the temperature. When the oil temp goes above 185F, the bypass closes and sends ALL the oil through the cooler. The engineering drawings that I showed at 3:36 and 3:39 back up this.
such a crappy location for a filter.
