- In the U.S., Tesla dominates the conversation around electric vehicles, but in Europe, it’s a different story. Germany-based Volkswagen Group has risen from the ashes of its 2015 emissions scandal to become the EV market leader in Europe, where it has an edge thanks to local manufacturing, brand familiarity, and cheaper price points. But whether Volkswagen can broaden its appeal to become the global EV leader remains to be seen.
Germany-based Volkswagen Group has risen from the ashes of its 2015 emissions scandal to become the EV market leader in Europe, where the company reported that it had 26% market share in the first half of 2021. While Tesla’s Model 3 has been selling well in the region, Volkswagen’s local manufacturing, brand familiarity and cheaper price points have helped give it an edge over Tesla.
But as Elon Musk aims to start production at the Berlin Gigafactory by year’s end, Volkswagen’s lead could be short-lived.
In the rapidly growing EV market, analysts say the Volkswagen Group benefits from its wide array of brands, which includes luxury marques like Audi, Bentley and Porsche. VW’s most popular EV in Europe is the more affordable ID.3, a hatchback that starts at around $40,000. And in September 2020, Volkswagen released the ID.4, an SUV aimed at the global market that has since become Volkswagen’s top-selling EV overall.
However, Volkswagen still lags behind Tesla globally. Tesla delivered more than 627,000 EVs in the first three quarters of 2021, while Volkswagen sold about 293,000 cars. But Volkswagen, along with other traditional automakers and EV startups, plans to release an abundance of new all-electric models in the next decade.

Before I watched this piece, I was worried about whether VW would still be in business in 5 years time. Now I share the same concern about CNBC.

Tesla is the best car brand. Period. I'm just worried a bit, because in terms of most sold cars, they are still only ranked 12th place in the US, 18th in Europe. And now the new full-self-driving feature (FSD) barely got level 2 approved by US authorities. Elon promised it would be level 5 and fully robotaxi-ready in 2018. I mean Mercedes now already has level 3 rated vehicles on the road and Tesla barely manages to get the level 2 rating. The Mercedes also have 100 miles more range than the best Tesla, i.e. 500 miles vs only 370 miles on the Model S. I really want Tesla to bring this home, but it looks kinda bad imo. Base Model 3 costs 40K, but you can get VW, Skoda, Hyundai etc.. with same range, features, better quality for 30K already. And now I read that Tesla is opening up its supercharger network to give public access to all car brands, even though these charging stations are famously unprofitable. Damn... now I'm a kinda depressed, where did it all go so wrong???? :(:(:(
Me too, half of these videos show that not even a basic google search on the subject was done. They tackle interesting topics (which is why I click them) but always come up with half truths or obsolete data and give the wrong conclusions. I guess it's the american standard of information *shrugs*.
I am living in Europe and had to decide on an EV as company car. I testdrived a Model Y and an Skoda Enyaq. Both are compareable in size. The Tesla was 20k more expensive. But that was not really important being a company car. My conclusions had been that Tesla is ahead in Software and charging (Supercharger network). And the VW/Skoda was ahead on comfort, Interaction design (due to physical buttons), space, security (Tesla did not even have a cover for the trunk, so everything would be flying around in case of an accident). service network and brand trust.
We decided for the VW/Skoda and it is a phantastic car. The software is inferior. No doubt about that. But after all it is a car and not a toy.
20k is not a negligible difference.

It might seem that Tesla has increased prices to match production capacity. The price of a new model 3 has increased about 8000 USD since we got ours.
I came to the same conclusion basically and ordered the Enyaq. I must add that the leasing factor is 0.7 and thus really good. However, i ordered the car in July and still have no delivery date, not even an estimate. How long was the delivery time for your car? Greetings from Germany

I don’t know who is in denial here, VW or CNBC. The most sold vehicle in Europe in September was the Tesla model 3 - not the most sold EV, the most sold vehicle! That’s without counting Giga Berlin.
CNBC still holds a grudge against Tesla... the channel still acts like a spoiled irritated kid. For that last documentary they did about (the succes of )Tesla, they talked to people who have at least a mild negative view on Tesla and Elon... it was so obvious what they were doing. CNBC can be very unprofessional

@@KaypangAsli I think that also shows Teslas problem. It is hard to make one model that everyone likes. VW group must have over a dozen entirely different models on offer now. So everyone can pick what they want.
@@andreasvelten476 This is not a problem (yet). When you sell everything you can possible produce of the current models, those become high volume products where you can drive down cost of materials and optimize production expenses. When Tesla starts to produce their own batteries in higher volumes, I'm sure we will start seing more models. But for now it does not make much sense economically.
I’m not necessarily a fan of Musk but his level on commitment to the EV cause is extraordinary. He dragged the entire industry forward by at least 15 years and forced every other manufacturer to re think and recalibrate their EV timeline.
that how it seems on the surface if you dont know the laws in the EU that were put into place in 2010 before Tesla had even sold a single model S.
Every single EV you can buy today has been in development for years because everyone knew since 2010 that they need an EV to meet their fleet emissions limits in the EU starting from 2020 on.
This video also fails to understand that entirely, its all thanks to regulations and not related to Dieselgate.

@@Pixelplanet5 Tesla (through its partnership with Panasonic inside the Tesla factory) are the worlds largest manufacturer of auto batteries in, a JV is not a supplier relationship, you might want to do a bit more research.

Short awnser - here in Czechia the entery level Model 3 costs as much as mercedes E class, whereas the base model ID3 can be had for the same money as a well specked Golf.

There have been some valid counterarguments, which I want to address:
1. Base model Tesla gives you a lot more tech than a base model ID3:
That's true, entery level ID3 doesn't have things like a heat pump, adaptive cruise controll (or vw offered a model without those, when I looked at it - they change it often). But especially the adaptive cruise controll/autopilot is one of those things that are nice to have but only useful when you drive long distances often. As they mentioned in the video, people here generaly don't drive nearly as much as you guys in the US (from my own experience I can tell you that driving 2 km to a train station, taking a train to a nearby city and moving around the city using trams, buses and trolleybuses is far more convenient and usualy quicker than driving directly where I need to go, likely because public transit vehicles have their own lanes and priority at bussy intersections; and I don't need a fancy autopilot to drive 4 km up and down a hill a day), so adaptive cruise controll/autopilot is one expensive thing that many customers can drop without remorse. Similar arguments can be found for many other software features of Teslas that VWs lack - nice to have but not really necessary for many people. VW at least gives you the option to not have what you don't need/can't afford.
2. Once the Berling factory is running Teslas will get cheaper:
Again - that’s true. Once VW builds it's battery factories VWs will get cheaper. What’s the price difference going to be in 6 years is anyone’s guess.
3. Tesla has better batteries than everyone else.
Possibly true. I don't know enough about batteries to critisize other people's work but my instict tells me it's a bit more complicated than just comparing a hadnful of possibly cherry-picked paramters like capacity and charge/discharge efficiency plus I belive VW has partnered with LG and Samsung who also make some really good batteries. However let's give Tesla the benefit of the doubt - even then superior technology is not a golden ticket to success. They also need to turn it into product the general public wants and can afford and VW has a huge andvantage there.

@@frogg8891 There is massive depreciation and maintenance that needs to be done on the VW plus the cost of petrol is enough to eat up that $13000 in a couple of years. Bottom line is still the bottom line and this is entirely why people are moving to EV. The difference between the ID series cars and any Tesla is like comparing a yugo to a bentley( which is also owned by VW)
I'm still amazed that when speaking of diesel emissions cheating the part that is always left out is the rest of the auto makers who had similar cheat software for the diesels like BMW FCA Chrysler.... the information is out but it's hushed that anyone else was doing the same thing

I think VW selling deisels in much higher numbers, thanks to heavily marketing their lies is the main driver for them being the main target. But yes, they all should have gotten enormous fines... but not equal fines

@@johnmoser2689 neither of those companies are nearly as big in Europe. And both sell a fraction of the diesel passenger cars in the US. Nearly all the diesel non-trucks sold in the US before that were from VW and their subsidiaries. WV's fine was fair. Everyone else should get fined too but per car, it would be a small consequence
@@johnmoser2689 No, it was because VW aggressively marketed their cars as Clean Diesel and then actively covered it up when they were busted.
It wasn't just some rouge engineers, the CEO of VW is going to jail for it. It was a cheating and fraud decision from the top of the company down. They are lucky they weren't sued into bankruptcy.
They were also the first to get busted and had the largest amount of cheating, and therefore were made an example of, and rightly so.
Who was funding the research to find these sophisticated cheating methods and why the EPA had already approved the cars

I would like to see side by side comparison numbers for all cars and trucks listed I can't believe a little VW turbo diesel pollutes anywhere close to what average turbo diesel trucks do
It does help that Volkswagen has a flexible dedicated platform, MEB, that allows VW to produce a large number of models fairly quickly (ID.3 and ID.4 now, ID.5 and ID.6 soon). Volkswagen is also developing a modified MEB platform for smaller cars that will replace something like the Polo model.

@@arvedludwig3584 I did hear about that. But I think it applies mostly to US production. The chinese cars are better. Most likely I tested a chinese one.
It's been reported on other EV vlogs that it takes VW on average 30 hours to build their EVs while it takes Tesla only 10 hours.
@@richardcogbill6791 It is not important how long the assembly takes because that depends largely how pre-manufactured the parts arrive in the factory. If VW takes longer then most likely because it does more assembly inhouse.
It also helps that VW build quality is much better than tesla and they have a decent dealer network. US car manufacturers have never done well in Europe

This article overlooks Tesla's supply constraints. Tesla is selling every car it's capable of making. This isn't a zero-sum game where only Tesla or VW can "win". We're seeing the gradual conversion of the car market to EV, and Tesla's advantage is that their balance sheet isn't carrying ICE assets that will shortly flip to become liabilities.
I'll revisit this video in a year after Giga Berlin is up and running.
I doubt it will change much, Teslas are much more expensive and most new cars (atleast in Germany) are sold as company cars. The company i work for doesnt have teslas as company cars because they dont get a good enough price for them.

What cars are sold as company cars mostly? Estate cars! Tesla isn´t making them because they think nobody want´s them. The others are not making them to not not cannibalize their ICE cars. I think the first real, elegant looking and technically advanced electric estate car without SUV optics will be a great success.

You missed the part about Herbert Diess having significant pressure put on him from inside VW and possibly being forced out in the future for trying to push VW hard to EVs. He invited Elon Musk to a meeting of executives to discuss how to changed the culture of VW to make it more nimble. Diess has also spoken strongly about how worried he is that Tesla can build a vehicle in about 10 hours in the new versions of the factories, where it takes VW 30 hours to get through the assembly line. You also missed that the Model 3 was the best selling car in Europe in October, not just best selling EV, best selling car. Diess and the CEO of Ford have both spoken about how significant that is. This is the first time in the history of auto manufacturing when the best selling car was made outside of Europe.

Tesla are not being blown away by VW, but VW has money behind it to be a serious competitor, especially if they are very focused on VW and take Tesla very seriously (which they do).
Also October hit many car makers very hard because of chip shortages. Something not affecting Tesla so badly. October car production in the UK for instance is the lowest since the 1950's. With not enough new cars, people have gone to buy 2nd hand cars with some 2nd hand cars apprichating by 60% in 2021 due to demand. I think Tesla may be the best selling new car but 2nd hand (1-3 year old) models of VW out sell Tesla.
Will be interesting to see if Tesla can sustain its top place once everyone else can start manufacturing cars again.
Tesla has a bad reputation on build quality something VW doesn’t have. The Tesla Model 3 starts over £ 40K in the UK far too expensive for a car of that type. The ID3 starts at a little over £ 30K so straight out of the blocks is attractive to more buyers. Tesla badly needs a small car in Europe that’s why it restarted talks with Toyota on technology sharing.
Not to mention that during the chip shortage Tesla was able to pivot to alternate supplies and their team was able to basically port the robust software to the new chip (with different instruction set) in about 2 weeks.
@@novainvicta Tesla will build its own small car...just as soon as demand for the medium sized cars decreases enough for them to care about it. Tesla is sold out for MORE than half a year on several of their models. Once the Texas and German GigaFactories come online...Tesla will dominate the EV market in Europe...just like they do in China and the US.

@Michel Bruns Tesla can build more BEVs than VW now!!! VW will not have the capacity to build as many as Tesla. Not to mention Tesla builds their vehicles more efficiently than VW .
The software in Tesla is far more advanced than what is in VW vehicles, but more importantly Engineers would rather work for Tesla than VW. This is what most miss about Tesla going forward. Their level of innovation and nimbleness is what leaves most manufacturers in the dust. The Tesla brand is synonymous with BEVs, more importantly Tesla Model 3 is the hottest selling EV in EU, when Giga Berlin is running at full steam Model Y will be the hottest selling EV in EU.
As for Technology, Tesla is the leader in BEV technology....and that has nothing to do with autonomous driving, which Tesla is the best positioned.
A better way to look at the BEV picture going forward, is to see what the companies plans are for production. VW isn't even planning to match Tesla's production levels going forwards. Part of the problem for VW and other legacy Automakers is Work Force. BEV (especially Tesla) require fewer workers. The BEV work force needs to be better trained and more nimble in abilities. This means the Legacy auto business will be a drag on BEV advancement, especially with companies that are Union shops.
Tesla does have serious competition that will probably overtake it as the leading BEV manufacturer. BYD is probably likely to be the new Toyota / VW, Tesla will largest premium brand in the BEV market. As for the Legacy Automakers, it is going to be a difficult road. Brand loyalty will be tested with EVs because their performance is so different than ICE.

In contrast, the Tesla Model 3 (+146%) takes the brand’s backloading in end-of-quarters to the next level and ends the month at #2 overall, only 58 sales below the Golf and smashing its ranking, volume (6.828) and share (3.5%) records in the process.

I'd argue that VW was already bigger in Europe than in the US...so for that reason alone, it wouldn't be shocking to see VW EV's being accepted more readily in Europe than Tesla's offerings. People are more likely to accept a new technology from a company they already accept, then from one which appears new.

Tesla doesn't make EVs in Europe meaning their supply is relatively low. So, even though demand is high, sales lag behind compared to places with Tesla factories. It's not complicated.
@@HopeIsFleeting You're 100% correct. Tesla currently only has supply for europe with what they decide to import from China. Despite this, they are still number one in Europe for Q3 2021 Plus number 2 in china... all from a single factory!
Plus, another significant point is that Tesla is the only EV manufacturer with any sort of profit margin on each car.. roughly 35% margin and constantly increasing. VW is basically selling EVs at a loss
Personally I fear that they are treating EVs as cellphones and that means introducing obsolescence into the equation. We will no longer be able to appreciate great vehicles that are 30 or 50 years old. I recently found an article about a person who rebuilt a wrecked Tesla and since the company had deemed that particular unit as wrecked, the person can't do a fast charge on Tesla's chargers anymore. Say good bye to your trusted mechanic and look into replacing your vehicle more often than expected due to it's built in obsolescence.

But with less moving parts ev's should last longer or do more miles, although the battery will need to be replaced...

That has nothing to do with planned obsolescence. Damaged batteries are deemed too dangerous to let laymen handle them or to be used again without verifiable repairs and Tesla doesn't want to get sued because of something that stupid.

You guys are missing, that Diess is under a lot of pressure at this moment and might get kicked off the throne at VW. His way to lead the company is not favorable for most high figures at VW.

No it's an internal thing and it has to do with the way many German businesses work. Diess, along with acknowledging they are years behind Tesla also said that the move to EVs would mean a reduction in jobs, and the union there doesn't like it. Unions have more say in Germany. So their Union is fighting against Diess. There's also a segment of the company that wants to slow the move to EVs, and this isn't VW specific, same is happening in the US. So, part of the management of VW along with the union doesn't want a transition to EVs to go as fast as Diess wants, and they could make a move to oust him.
Yeah office politics, involving other peoples interests. But why does it work in other companies but not VW?
As a Swede that just ordered my first EV and real family car cause children. I had to go with Skoda Enyaq/VW brand. I wanted to compare an Tesla model Y but for starting price at 20.000k more then an mid specced VW/Skoda it was easily out of the budget. Maybe in 3 years hopefully they can compete with the German factory!
Unlikely, Tesla will never move downmarket, they simply have to maintain their luxury margins to stay competitive.
It will be much less than three years...next year they will be pumping out Model Y's and will not have to pay transport or import taxes / fees. The supply shortage will end in the near future...and then the Model Y and Model 3 will be going back down in price to where they started. It's simply too few Tesla vehicles for the amount of demand for them right now. Giga Berlin and Giga Texas will start changing that next year.

@@xxXCromaxXxx That's actually untrue. Tesla currently has a margin of >28% on the Model 3/Y, and this is being manufactured at just 2 factories currently, and expected volume will be around 900,000 vehicles for 2021.
This is important, because 2 new factories are due to begin low rate initial production of the 3 and Y in December 2021 in Berlin and Austin, TX. These factories are all new facilities designed to maximise production efficiency beyond the existing factories in Fremont, CA and Shanghai. When they hit full rate production in Q1 2023 we can expect the production numbers to go from 900K for '21 to above 2.5 Million by Q4 2023. This will enable Tesla to lower their prices significantly from the current 28% margin. The reason they are keeping prices high is because they can't keep up with demand, hence they've hiked the price by $7K on their vehicles as the order waiting time has blown out to 6 months. By 2025 we can expect a further 2 factories to be up and running which will see vehicle production increase to around 5 million vehicles per year.
This might seem incredibly ambitious, but lets remember the hard reality that the Berlin and Austin factories will have gone from an empty muddy field to producing their first vehicles in roughly 18 months, and the Shanghai factory did the same in a staggering 11 months. Tesla knows how to build their factories amazingly fast. And lets also keep in mind that the company has $16 billion in cash on hand, and only $2 billion in debt, not including their loan service to customers. Watch their revenue and earnings for Q4 2021. July to end September alone saw a net profit of $1.6 billion for the company, of which only ~$280 million was US government regulatory credits.
The best new Electric vehicle from VW is from his subsidary Skoda the Skoda Enyaq IV Coupe which will compete with the model y and can be bought for an affordable price.

And the Enyaq drivetrain is outdated compared to a model y just compare the effincy between the model y and enyaq.

Tesla is still paying about 5000€ in import duties and probably another 5000€ for logistics costs as they have to import model 3 and y from shanghai. They also have by far the best margins in the industry, so once they can service demand the price is coming down. Give it a year of Giga Berlin ramp-up and we'll see. Right now there is just no telling.

Maybe it’s like how it is here in the US. Most units sold are mainly in certain select cities. So not many will see them in the wild for a few years. Also, most of what’s being counted as “sold” by a legacy auto brands are actually sitting at dealership lots waiting to actually be sold to a customer.
Depends where you are Tesla higher priced so in posher areas while vw cars are everywhere plus the id cars are far newer but I see them semi regularly.

It's one of the neatest things about EVs. You go outside, unplug your car, drive, do stuff, drive home, and plug it back in. It's very rare you need some other charging network or similar.

It's not just the cars, it's the entire infrastructure:
If I would want to buy an VW EV or if I had any trouble with it, the next dealer/workshop would be less than 10 minutes away. If I wouldn't like that specific dealer/workshop, there are 3 or 4 more within 30 minutes of travel time. The same can be said for basically any other established brand like Mercedes, BMW, and VWs own brands like Audi, or Skoda. Tesla? The next "Pop-Up" is 40 minutes away, the next service center 2 1/2 hours.
Tesla may be able to build a "gigafactory" in two years, but the kind of infrastructure big brands offer takes decades to develop - and until they are able to provide service similar to VW et al. near me, I won't be buying a new Tesla, much less a used one.

I have a tesla since 2019. There was a noise on my steering. They came to my house and repaired it in my driveway. In covid times, I work at home.... it´s perfect, and FAR more convenient than a dealer experience.

My experience though with Japanese cars is that they are so well built they require much less checking then what is accepted as normal. The e-NV200 I have was actually assembled in Europe/UK but it seems Nissan makes sure they are up to the same standard as Japanese built. BTW I did my first repair since I purchased the car a new windscreen wiper for the co-driver.
To be fair tesla service is impeccable but yeah it is difficult to have that kind of infrastructure.
You can tell that this piece was written by Americans. Two points that are very important but were missed:
1) Tesla doesn't understand the European market. They're not luxurious enough to demand a premium price point and they don't produce smaller city cars that appeal to mass consumers. Their customers are all tech bros because their products don't appeal to the European market at large.
2) E-bikes are massive in Europe. They're outselling EVs left and right. And governments are focusing more on rail transit while America is still expanding its highways. It looks like the electrification of transport in Europe will be largely on two wheels and rail, not on four wheels.

Yea... a bigger car gives you more interior space but it's a lot more difficult to find a large enough parking spot in cities. Which is a problem for Tesla because they only sell expensive barges. In rural areas though, space is not such a constraint, however there people usually don't have either the money or the will to buy a Tesla so there is that.
Current Tesla’s are obviously designed for the American market. I highly doubt they intended for their cars to dominate in Europe. They are either working on a real European catered product, or they are content in being a niche brand in Europe. I honestly think their expansion to Europe was a bad decision. I think the company is too young to be taking such massive risk. Especially since they are building a whole factory in Europe, they really need a small car the appeals to more Europeans.

This video makes a big deal about VW building a bunch of battery factories in the EU but doesn't tell you the expected output. All combined they're targeting ~240GWh by 2030. Tesla is targeting 100GWh in Berlin and ramping to ~250GWh as they build the rest of the phases. On one campus.
I'll bet money that before 2025 we see not only Berlin expanding their construction but a whole new EU factory being built by Tesla.

Model 3 and Y use CCS, so they can use both superchargers and other chargers.
The upper part of the CCS is a type 2, so public type 2 chargers can also be used.
800 volt tech Kia EV6GT recharge time 18 minutes, old 400 volt tech Tesla cars recharge time 25 to 30 minutes for the same range. Tesla is for people who are stuck in 2017 :-)
is it because VW generally makes better cars and has a much wider offering? The EV first mover advantage Tesla had is evaporating in all markets while they are still ramping up production. VW sells 8+ m cars a year and a big portion of that will slowly but gradually transition to EV as we move towards 2035 when new gasoline and diesels car sales will be banned in EU. Just look at the infrastructure investments these existing car companies are doing e.g. PowerCo as they transform their entire value chain from ICE to EV preparing for the future + they have broad governmental push and support (unlike US). Im not saying Tesla will do poorly and I appreciate everything it has done for the world but I do not believe it will ever dominate the car industry.

Tesla Model 3 is a large car over here, and rather expensive. (not for what it is). And then there is the perceived quality issues in the fit and finish of the Tesla's. VW's aren't perfect either. The ID3 was a software disaster end 2019, but a extensive dealernetwork makes is a better bet.

It’s all about business infrastructure, you can find a VW dealer and thus service in every major city of all EU countries. When I choose a car having the support infrastructure at a good price level is everything. Cars need maintenance and eventually break down, you need reasonably priced service that is actually available.
EVs do not require the same level of maintenance, so what you are describing is a non-issue.

I’m not sure you fully understand the issues those cars are having. Further more, I would not be even willing to travel to another city for fixing/ maintenance. CCS will be the most common standard. the japanese chademo is dying and even tesla is now adding ccs to their chargers step by step. at some point, tesla will use ccs for their cars too, to let them charge on ccs chargers.
Well technically there's 2, the one everyone else uses then there's Tesla. You might think there's 3 because there's, J1772, CCS, and Tesla. But CCS is just J1772 with support for fast charging, so it's basically one plug.

I see a bus pass in your future...and mine also. Luckily, it will probably be on an electric bus.
The U.S. really needs to work on public transportation, especially here in the west. We need more passenger trains/trams. We then wouldn't have to rely so heavily on purchasing and maintaining our own personal vehicles. Taking the bus in my medium sized city can take hours just to get to the other side (which is a 15-20 minute drive). It is inefficient and lacking. The only passenger train that I know of in my entire state is in Seattle, which is a few hundred miles away from me. It is the same throughout the west. It really has to change.
This "report" is totally off. I live in Germany, and there are so many more Tesla EVs on the road than VW EVs. The total number of new Tesla EVs registered in September 2021 was 7902, and the total number of EVs registered from all VW Companies (VW, Porsche, Audi, Skoda, Seat) was at 9262. Most of the people I know who have VW EVs work either (in)directly for VW or a dealership, or are VW fans. VW lost its share of the US market due to the diesel scandal, and no amount of blowing smoke up anyones ... will fix that problem.
tesla cars usually come once a quarter. vw cars are coming every month. so, the registration numbers from only one month is misleading. also the chip shortage is disrupting the real situation. over the last two years vw alone sold more EVs in europe than tesla. that will no change after ramping up giga berlin because vw is ramping up the factory in emden and will sell the id.5 and id.buzz next year. and one year later they will open the new factory in wolfsburg.
also, the plant in chattanooga will ramp up production in a few months and the ID.4 does not need to be shipped to the US. that means more capacity for europe.

The trend mentioned in the video will continue. Ultimately as VW pushes out more EV models they are going to vastly outsell Tesla (at least in Europe). That is mainly because Tesla is a brand that offers premium cars that cost a lot of money. Meanwhile VW is going for volume products that cost considerably less. I'm sure the new European Tesla factory will be a huge success but it's unrealistic to think that Tesla will compete (in the long term) with high volume companies like VW.

What irritates me is the lies around range. Tested indoors no headwind. Nobody in the car. Nothing turned on set at its most economical speed. Just watched a program with a ev towing a caravan. Best figure they got was 100 miles before the battery was flat. And you can't charge with anything being towed. So you have to disconnect and reconnect every 100 miles. Many winter driving tests halve the range. Battery's and infrastructure have to be better.
tesla has no european factory producing cars at an appealing pricepoint yet, they are still doing fairly well there. let's wait until giga berlin gets online to see where the competition is heading. As a tesla owner, the technology features on tesla cars is quite game changing, ever since i bought my model 3 in late 2019 it has received numerous new features.
Yeah cos giga Berlin was supposed to start production in October but some so called environmentalists group want another round of public discussions of the factory for the third time. They are talking about their entire lineup but Tesla is beating them badly so much so that the CEO has had Elon speak to their leadership and the VW CEO admits they are not winning. Tesla's volume is low because they are servicing the US and EU ATM. Once gigaBerlin comes online, VW will barely be seen in the rear view mirror

That's what people think of when they refer to "economy of scale", with that alone VW will have a big advantage over Tesla.
Not to mention that they provide their workers with living wages, Government enforcement of Union participation, 30 and more days of paid vacation, bonus payments at year's end, Government subsidized retirement, * subsidized paid sick leave, * parental leave, company subsidized privat retirement plans, worker and union participation in company decisions by having seats on the company leaderboard.

Additionally it would like VW group has some issues with batteries in their Porsche and Audi line ups. The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
Meanwhile VW is valued at 5 times P/E while Tesla is valued at 160 times P/E
Tesla's rate of innovation is orders of magnitude higher than any traditional OEM. They say well Tesla may be selling at 3X the rate of VW (when you add in hybrids and the Eup city car), but just wait unit 2030. Do they really think Tesla will fall behind LOL. Tesla will be well over 10M vehicles per year by 2030.

Owning a car is expensive because you pay insurance, taxes, parking and charging. Most people would just get a Robotaxi subscription. Tesla wouldn't be the only Robotaxi out there either. Baidu already has Robotaxis in China. If Baidu can do it, what prevents other manufacturers of doing it aswell?
@@imranarshad7302 Because Robo taxi widespread use is still many years away IMO. Owning a car will always be a worthy luxury that those that can afford it will own their own even if it does have true Level4/5 autonomy. I have to admit I'm looking at this on a US centric basis. For my use case a robo-taxi would be way too inconvenient. I have items in my car that I need for work. Also, how would Robo taxis work for rush hour? For those who commute to a job, they would all get on the app at once and request a Robo taxi for the exact same time. You would still need one Robo taxi per person for that use case.
@@rogerheuckeroth7456 Baidu already has Robotaxi's so I don't really think it's going to be that long away. Like you said, owning a car is a luxury. Luxury is not something the masses need however, which means that sales would decline, not increase.
I don't think Tesla would be the only Robotaxi on the road either. We could see subscription based services from many EV makers, but also from third party companies like Hertz and Uber.
@@imranarshad7302 I think Baidu is still in development. They still use a person in the drivers seat monitoring the system. Think full autonomy is still a ways off. And like I said it does not fit all use cases and would be constrained unless there was one robotaxi per commuter. That makes it less financially viable. I think widespread use is still over 10 years away.
Aren't you forgetting other automakers ? For now Tesla and VW are leading the sells but you can't forget that for a long time Renault ZOE dominated the EV panorama and it will be a mater of time until some other automaker hit the sweet spot. European consumers are more pragmatic , they don't want an "Apple on wheels" , they just want an under 15K car that can go for 300-400Km in a charge , and some other automakers are getting closest to that goal. And i am not even considering China automakers (like BYD) that are starting to launch some of their models in Europe.
I live here in Germany. No, they want an Audi that goes fast.
Not just the ZOE but also KIAs EV6 and Hyundais IONIQ have just been released. Kia and Hyundai have been gaining a lot of market share in Germany over the past few years (they hired big names from German Car Manufacturers) and you bet people will be glad to buy their new EV cars. The ID series is not well received by German car critics due to a lot of software issues while cars like the Kia EV6 are getting a ton of praise. VW is obviously known to charge a premium price while manufacturers like Kia/Hyundai do not. Yes, just like the video says, VW has a reputation for quality but there are still a lot of people with an open mind that will consider a ZOE, an EV6, an IONIQ if they feel like its the objectively better choice for their money. Look at german roads, sure, germans love german cars, but germans also like getting a lot for their money, so manufacturers that do offer better value cars also make good money here. so you look at german roads, its rather diverse in terms of brands.

One thing not mentioned is that there is a long waiting list in Europe for Teslas and that they are sold before they even reach the continent.
Actually Tesla is the only supplier in Germany that does not have a waiting list today. You can get a Tesla right away while waiting time on other brands is between 3 and 12 mns

The thing that I am going to look at hard is the cost to repair first. Then if cost to purchase is head to head the same as a Tesla that I might be looking at then cost to repair, and cost to maintain will determine which vehicle I will purchase.

The biggest advantage VW and other automakers is that I can always find a local dealer for repairs and service. Where I live I am over 5 hours away from a Tesla service center. In addition, I feel that VW and others know how to build quality cars, something Tesla is strugeling with.
Well, the repair shops is a problem partially caused by the manufacturers themselves.
As they don't like third parties having they proprietary tools, that don't need to exist, for no other good reason beside keeping owners inside of they system.
Funny enough, it promotes monopolies.

Only ONE body shop in my area can work on Tesla and if something breaks, it is 5 hours to a service center. VW is 5 min away as well as multiple Ford dealers. No thanks on that Tesla.

VW carries a huge amount of debt and a dealer network that isn't necessarily onboard with Ev's.
Maybe but the dealers have received a big blow last year by removing their price negotiation ability.
If you want a VW you can order it online now and you will get the same price at every dealership. Order online and pick up at your nearest dealer.
So what do you really need a car dealer for now? For annual maintenance and repairs I prefer independent repair shops because they are cheaper and the service is better.

Near the Amazon forest, in Brazil, you can find a parts dealer and a mechanic who can fix a VW. EVs are simpler than internal compustion ones, btw.

The real answer is the same reason VW isn't selling EVs in the US. GF4 isn't up and running so not enough cars are making it to Europe. Once the factory is up and running, don't be surprised if Tesla starts selling far more cars.
I just saw a used Model Y Dual Motor at my VW dealership for $58k. I make a good salary but even I would consider spending that much a foolish financial move. The Tesla prices keep moving up and not down to actually fulfill their mission statement, I will keep looking.

Europeans, especially Germans take pride in the cars that are manufactured there. The fact that VW is aiming for Tesla should tell you that Tesla is still dominant worldwide. Once giga factory in Berlin is up, that's only going to compete with VW more. But that being said, I'm glad all the traditional automakers are getting in on EV as well. The more, the better
