  • The Layton Bitstripper can control any of the Rock-afire Explosion characters, lights, effects, and anything else that is normally controlled by the "Gray Box". Here is the first public demo of the Layton Bit Stripper with the designer himself, Layton helping Aaron to show its features and how it operates.

We're already ripping off the tech from "Layton's" bit stripper to build an even better programmer that actually outputs the data with the audio into a file and allows you to then also add videos to the programming so it's actually more like Cyberstar than his programmer. People should never post pictures of things like this that expose how it works if they intend to make any money... We're going to sell ours for WAY less so anyone can buy it, rich OR poor.

Fantastic work. Some labels yes. A way to update the wave stripper eeprom as well (usb, etc.). I would have used a different power connector (same as on power supply for pc) giving you more flexibility (powering through ups or from different power connector.

...and seven hundred something dollars too! He got the info from me, for free, then turns around and charges THIS much...just to be a jerk. This is the REAL Aaron Fechter folks... How would you honestly feel if you helped someone out and gave them scans and they just took them, didn't say Thank you, and said let's make these, not give the guy who helped us jack SHIT and on top, charge people $700+ for them... You wouldn't be happy...let's just be completely honest... if Aaron did that to you. Would you still think the guy is a good guy?

This is fantastic!! Did Creative provide Layton with the Marantz real-time protocol and the bit assignments for the characters or did he have to reverse engineer that himself? Does it use fixed timing to decode or is it purely based on the data pulses (async), so that it will still work with a tape playing too fast or slow? What did he use as a microcontroller?

the input is litteraly the song audio that is been playing by the computer? how does it know te movements?

    • @toasTr0n
      @toasTr0n 5 років тому +4

Yes and no. The input is recorded audio, but it is not song audio. Rock-afire shows are 4-track audio recordings. 2 tracks are stereo audio for the viewers to hear and the other 2 tracks are the animation data that would be decoded by the gray box, or in this case, bit stripper. Each of those two animation channels just plays a repeating signal that indicates the state (on or off) of 120 different bits many times every second. Each bit can be assigned to a robot movement, spotlight, curtain motor, etc. The bit stream is encoded as audio and just sounds like a screeching or buzzing to a human. The need for 4 tracks and a high fidelity signal is why showtapes were originally distributed on reel to reel tape and not cassettes.

      Way, Way, Way past that.
Have running graphics on 3 stages running at 1920x1080 on multiple linux computers at one time representing 3 independent stages. Actually running in Ubuntu 18.04 (64bit) but compile to arm also. Just don't have good character pictures, most of the running shows are down, bad or gone, still working on a complete set of character pictures from the internet in all positions. Considering Cartoon pictures made with a animator package (the easiest way to get a characters in all positions).
The end result is a software player, no compressor or robots to break and a projector for any size stage I want (tested on 100"). 4 ME! Something fun to do.
I can replace ANY or ALL characters and Stage Pictures with ANYTHING. I am ready to animate characters for making new songs.
In and Out of the Grey/BLUE box was the EASY part just 7&8 bit stuff, a little twist on the 24v valves instead of 5v valves, most of the standard hardware is for 5v. Very dooable with a Pi into 16 i/o's (really just o's). A Pi will do 64 with cheep stuff....
I like to keep my programming skills going a little.

I can't tell what's working and what's theoretical; it mostly sounds like you're bragging about vaporware. So where's your demonstration video? If you really have something here and need to work out details, I recommend you try to work with Aaron on the concept so both parties can benefit.

      ^LOL (as Homer Simpson) Boooooooooring!
Yeah that sounds fun 🙄... a virtual show... talk about a person who wasn't present as a child in those real showrooms cause if you were you would've caught that craze those of us with even a single bot, got that a virtual version is juuuust NOT going to satisfy!
I mean that's perfect for someone who is just never going to be ABLE to get ahold of one...or get one to FIT(which OMG must be the worst feeling...to actually get one and have to ultimately toss it for lack of space!) But HEY then that's where your method comes in! Haha
If you HAVE one and actually are INTO the hobby... you'd know that part of owning one, much like owning a classic CAR... you KNOW that sometimes they need to be repaired or else it won't be fun the watch IN PERSON anymore. The fact that they were built to BE repaired and still function in... 2020 is a point that's flying past your head man!
It's actually fun to take them apart and take off an old cylinder and either replace it, or rebuild it. IDK man but when I fire up my Cyberstar comp, see that copyright info, and knowing that when I pop that tape in... it's about to be circa 1991 again! I like to sit on my ass, pop open a Pabst blue ribbon, a can of Pringles and just watch my library for hours... Then turn the key thus changing the eprom from VHS to DVD and continue from 2005 through today. 🤙🏼
