A lot of people ask me for tips on organising their creative endeavours, staying more disciplined and tracking goals - this mini series on routine will hopefully answer some of those questions as best as I can.

Akala, this is great. If you are continuing this series, would you be able to share more about your process? You show your notebooks and speak to your brainstorming process. And of your refinement of ideas, until you come to clarity of what the focus of the project will be. Could you talk and show more of that? Could you talk about your process about how you develop an idea and get to a place where you are satisfied and clear on what your project will be?

Have to say, what you say here about "stop watch accountability " I find, as a person recently diagnosed with ADHD and Autism, to be absolutely crucial in helping to maintain consistent effort and working toward achieving my goals.
Accountability is a key part of success.
I use a simple timesheet app I found on Google Play Store that allows me to punch in, punch out and record my breaks easily. It's also easy to review shifts on a daily, weekly and monthly basis and add notes to each shift.

As a professional writerfor over 20 years, a couple of things Akala says here echo what I have noted in a writing seminar i have conducted a couple times to audiences . Namely the need for discipline and doing 10 minutes each day as opposed to 4 hours one day and nothing for the next several days.
Hi Akala, you gave a lecture at oxford union, probably 4years ago on African history where you shared referenced some slides. Is there a way I can get a hold of those slides? I'll pay for them

That is the book, robin walker is a very respected scholar who once taught Akala when he was younger.
I'm a writer who went to college and studied English.
I also took a creative writing course in college.
It's interesting to see the view point of someone who became a writer without higher education.
I don't know if Akala teaches writing workshops but he should.

Listened to you in the golden age of British hiphop(2003-2010) Can't believe you've got so little recognition for your talent.. it shouldn't be lost in the sands of time. These are great! Last week it was your daily health routine, which got me back to drinking my herbs again ( a reminder I needed), now this week how to be disciplined with writing. As a writer the stopwatch idea is something I will implement because once I get up and leave my writing I sometimes don't come back for a day.
This could be a great, regular series. More please.

Do you have a podcast? I would listen to that shit all day. I feel like there's so much you could talk about and the range of guests you could speak to would be amazing. Getting out of my own way is advice i rarely hear from creatives, it is so crucial when you're facing many obstacles to not add another by getting in your own way too.

Great video. I'm going to take a look and see if any of the poetry would work with my GCSE class. I've found that the Carribean/British 'Calypso' poetry produced by the likes of John Agard, Grace Nichols, Linton Kwesi Johnson, even Benjamin Zephaniah has been quite engaging for students. It could be interesting to add another voice to that list. Good luck with all of your work in teaching and mentoring young people.
