    Boy I wish I could find a spreader like that. It sure would be handy to be able to spread lime at my leisure. Usually it’s a mad rush because there’s only a narrow window to get it done.

      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I'm glad my neighbor has this one and let's me borrow it. It's really a handy size. I definitely beat the rush this year. My cousin also uses this spreader, but usually later in the fall and he does several hundred acres, which means then that I have to wait. So, I decided to do it earlier this year.

      I found a newton crouch spreader that had a stainless hopper and whole back of it was stainless and in good shape but the 2 pieces of square tubing going down it was rusted out $3000 in whole thing and had a great spreader. It was also one of the ones with belts so u could run it with a truck or a tractor without hydraulics.

    Man I love that Oliver; looks brand new. I had a 1750 open station that was the easiest starting and best running of all my Oliver fleet. Sadly traded it in to get Dawns T4 for the AC and 4WD. We’re able to get lime from a local paper plant super cheap and they pay for soil tests. I’ll have video on that in a few weeks.

      The 1650 was restored 22 years ago - and still looks good even though it's used regularly. I sure try to take care of it - and all my Oliver fleet. Just subscribed to your channel. Will look forward to the lime video and others. thanks for stopping by and hope you subscribed.

      @@Davefromrollinghillsfarms I love Olivers too, obviously. And in terms of my story telling style, I think part of that can be attributed to having been a high school teacher for nearly 30 years. In any event, I'm glad you're here.

    Enjoyed seeing how you do that nice to have people you can share equipment with especially when that equipment is a seldom use item.
    I've seen several different operations where lime was hauled in and dumped on the ground like you did here. I have to wonder what the process is to remove enough of that lime from the dump site so as not to over-apply and adversely alter the pH of that spot.

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому

      That spot is one that I take hay off of and often use it for parking hay equipment in the summer until haying and straw are done. I scrape off as much as I can get with the skid loader. Have not seen any adverse effects yet. In fact, I can't even tell where last year's pile was. Thanks for watching and commenting, my friend. Always good to hear from you.

      @@pagrainfarmer my friend thank you for responding to my question, I was curious about that. Having no experience because I hire out the entire job and they come in on a spreader truck, eliminating the need for a transfer pile.

    What's the price of lime right now. If you don't mind me asking

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому +1

      At the quarry where I go, it's $11.66 a ton. I got about 25 tons, which means I have $291 tied up in the lime and $50 in fuel for the F600- so about $341 in all. If I would have had one of the trucking companies deliver lime here, it would have been 2 to 3 times that much. The F600 has really paid for itself over the 2.5 years I've owned it. • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому +1

      That 886 should just play with that spreader. I know it is a bigger horse than my 1650, and it handles the spreader with ease. Thanks for being here.

      Only 20 more horse but I wish they put a slip clutch on the PTO of the spreader about the only thing I don't like about it

    I spread some chicken manure one time that was dumped out on the grass like that. The man running the loader kept on getting sod in my spreader. Talk about a pain in the neck.

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому

      That's happened to me when I spread lime later in the fall and the ground was wet. It definitely is a pain when you get large clumps of sod in the spreader. By doing this when the ground's fairly dry, I've avoided that problem.

    Nothing wrong with the barter system

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  2 роки тому

      I like to be independent and have all my own equipment, but just can't justify the cost of a lime spreader that I use 1 day a year. But we do barter around here. Even just with doing different things for each other. Also, I have one friend who trades me beef for hay. Works for me. It's a community, which is nice (with out getting too warm and fuzzy).

    You may have to go get another load at the quarry for all you scattered around

    • @pagrainfarmer
      @pagrainfarmer  Рік тому

      Not really - I scraped things up when I was done and there was virtually nothing left on the ground. Thanks for watching.
