Same here, man! I got my first Sanborn album at age 10. It was change of heart. I remember between him and Lenny Pickett, I learned Altissimo. I’ll never forget the look on peoples faces, when I started blowing altissimo register during warm-up at concert band. I was like age 12 at that point. Thankful to my parents who let me practice altissimo for so many late nights, in the basement.
Your tone has greatly influenced mine.... I was just looking into David Sanborn today and was like that sounds like Scott paddock ... Until I see this video
Same with me Scott. The first time I heard Sanborn, as a kid, it was 1984 from the live studio album, "Straigh to the Heart." Especially on the song "Smile". He hits a screaming high note. I fell in love with his sound immediately and he influenced me from then on. I had the opportunity 2 years ago to do a live master class and spoke with him online for about 10 mins. Seen him 6 times live.
Yeah, I was in the 8th grade when I heard him for the first time and it was the Double Vision CD with Bob James and the tune Since I Fell For You that really hooked me!
I nearly bit a hole in my bottom lip when I started learning altissimo. I guess I was doing it wrong, lol. But, “back in my day” there was no UA-cam and no internet! It was all trial and error and you learned on your own. Pressing play and rewind on the cassette tape player over and over for hours 😅

RIP, David
Amen. Sanborn can rock, burn, and swing simultaneously.
