Happy New Year. It's not being ungrateful when the gifts you get are obviously not picked with your interests or likes in mind. I would rather get nothing than get things that were just randomly thrown into a pile for you. If the person can't afford to buy anything then write a heartfelt letter, bake some cookies, offer to help with a task, etc.
