About how deep is the North end where you typically fish for crappie? You look like you're really close to shore. I run a prop and still have ptsd from damaging two already from shallow runs.

    • @SilhouetteOutdoors

Kind of depends a lot on the weather. We were catching them out in the deep water in the narrows, and they were suspended in about 15-20 ft of water 2 weeks ago. They should be coming up into the shallows to spawn now. Right off the bank. And that whole flat by Cottonwood is only about 15-20 feet deep most of the way across. A depth finder or flasher really helps to find them when they aren’t on the bank.

How’s the fishing in the first part of June? Considering a drive from the east side of the state so would like to take my son and target shallow water fish. Do you have a recommended launch this time of year? Thank you.

The reservoir is smashed with crappie right now! But 95% of them are 7-8 inches long. There are some big one’s but the lake is pretty much starting over on the crappie cycle. It’s still really fun for kids, but not much of a fillet off a 7 incher.. Lots of nice small mouth tho. Cottonwood Campground is a great spot!

Is that the one they call "silver blue" that in the picture looks like is has some yellowish on the belly?
They're proud of those at $8.11 each.
But for whatever reason the "Shad" colored one is only $4.99.
I'm going to fish Brownlee next week not far from Farewell Bend (Huntington area) that you mentioned.
Did you ever fish the shad colored one and also have you done a crappie vid at Brownlee or anywhere else?
    Brownlee needs some better videos.
For as big a fishery that it is...I'm really surprised there aren't better videos of Brownlee crappie fishing.
I'm a big time salmon/steelhead fisherman from SW Washington but getting into the crappie fishing a little the last 4 years or so and enjoy it.
Getting ready to do some real crappie fishing on the Snake next week...a 6 hour drive from my house.
But it sounds like it's been inconsistent due to Idaho Power raising & lowering the water level so much.
Do you have that same problem at CJ Strike?
I have a friend that lives about 1 hr, 20 mins above Huntington right on the river with his own boat dock and might go visit him if we have the time.
    Smallmouth where he lives.
CJ Strike is about 1.5 hours upriver from him...so I might fish it yet.
In your opinion...what's the better crappie fishery...CJ Strike or Brownlee?

    • @SilhouetteOutdoors
      @SilhouetteOutdoors  3 роки тому

Hands down CJ, guys are filling coolers with crappie on CJ right now, and it will just get better as the spawn kicks in. Brownlee has been really low, and just inconsistent. I have a catfish video for Farewell Bend and the Stek park area, but no crappie video “yet”. My shad rap coloring can change with water clarity, I like the steel blue, but the bronze and black works as well. I like the little rattle in it with murky water. It seems you catch a few less crappie with that tactic, but bigger fish when you do. We get a few smallies and trout trolling those as well. The crappie in the thumbnail is over 16 inches if that gives you an idea. You might think about Owyhee reservoir for crappie, guys usually do well there. But CJ is on fire!

    • @dandettmann595

      @@SilhouetteOutdoors..."Might think about Owyhee"?
You mean I might think about CJ! :P
My friend lives right on the Snakein the Caldwell area.
Looks like he's under 1.5 hours from CJ Strike.
I'll see if he's game...if not me & the friend I'm going with might just have to go the extra distance from Huntington to CJ Strike for one or two days fishing.
I'm going with Brad...the one that has that Brad's fishing gear business that makes the Brad's Super Bait's, Wigglers, divers and a whole lot more.
He even has that prop saver business these days...
Probably be trying some of his plugs for trolling crappie...which are identical to the old Wiggle Warts.
Do you live in Idaho or Oregon?
With all the Idaho hunting videos I'm venturing to guess, Idaho.
That was an excellent job you did on that video Scott.
Hoping you do a video on Huntington crappie some day...if it ever gets consistent again.
I've really been doing my homework this year as I finally prepare to do the long haul.
      And inconsistent is 100% correct.
I wouldn't do Owthee...there are other places that are good about half our distance to Brownlee.
But CJ Strike looks like too much fun and we have to do it and/or Brownlee at least once!
My friend that lives in the Caldwell area does Owyhee and has for years...but he does trout and it might be in the river rather than the awful big lake.
I wouldn't even know where to start over there! Ha!

      @@SilhouetteOutdoors...oh by the way...
I see you have a Yaquina Bay jetty video...lingcod think I saw.
I used to live in nearby Depoe Bay and was in the rockfish tackle business along the Oregon Coast..
I'll have to check out your video someday.
I've fished there...but fished mostly the rocky outcroppings around the Depoe Bay area...not only because I lived there and it was more convenient...but better to fish for Black's & Ling's...because you don't have that ebb & flood factor of water pushing between the jetties.
It's just like fishing out in the open ocean and anytime regardless of tide can work.
I spent much time out there in boats also.
      Love fishing for rockfish.

Is the catfishing good at C J Strike?

    • @SilhouetteOutdoors
      @SilhouetteOutdoors  3 роки тому +1

It's spotty.. They do well summer time up in the Bruneau Arm, but it gets really mossy mid-summer and tough to fish from moss drifting onto your line. I've never been able to dial them in there and it's more of a random cat caught while fishing for other species.
