You hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the main audience. Since the CX-3 was available in showrooms in Canada, the Mazda dealer I work at, has sold 7. Every single one of those CX-3's sold, were bought by older couples past 60.

I just purchased this CX3 GT model with the tech package.... I am in love with my new vehicle and all the features. I agree with your review of this. One feature they did miss for the high end model is there are no power seats. Personally not a big deal but I was surprised by this. As far as the arm rests I did initially notice this quite a bit but truly it maintains better posture and eliminates the elbow pressure of and arm rest or center console.

It is interesting to watch, how the reviewers memory fade as time goes by. Few years ago the Mitsubishi Outlander Sport/RVR (which BTW has nearly identical footprint as the HRV and CX-3) was deemed (even by Zack) to be underpowered with its "small" 2.0L engine with 148 HP and 145 lbft torque. Here the 2.0L engine is "large" and the nearly identical power and torque values (146 HP and lbft) are now perfectly acceptable.I watch most of Zack's reviews and appreciate his work but I would like to see more coherence and less contradiction. Thank you for your work, especially for addressing values that Canadians care for.

AWCAWD I suggest you drive the RVR and get back to me. What kills the RVR is the crappy CVT, watch my video again. This is a much better vehicle.

You wanted comments on why I want to buy/drive a small AWD vehicle.
To put it simply, because my needs have changed. I now live on a mountain, not in the city.
I am beating up my Bimmer 3 series coupe driving it to work everyday from my house on a mountain into work in a metro area 30 miles away. The last 2 miles to/from my house are a potholed gravel/dirt (mud this time of year) road.
The BMW is great on relatively smooth pavement, and fun on the curvy 5 miles of road up to the gravel road, but once on the gravel road it doesn't work so well; I already put it in the ditch once and came close several other times when I wasn't paying as much attention as I should.
We also get snow and ice, where the BMW sucks - I need AWD about 6 months out of the year when the paved roads are wet/icy or have snow. I also need AWD the first and last 5 minutes of my drive while on the gravel/dirt/mud road near my house.
Also, I occasionally want/need to haul something that doesn't fit in the coupe, even with the rear seats down (I have the pass through option) because of the limited floor to rear shelf space.
In short, for my lifestyle (I really like living in the woods on the mountain), a small AWD utility vehicle is a lot more practical and safe than my more sporty BMW.

I like your reviews very much. You speak English very clearly, vocalizing so well (I'm not native listener).
    I like Mazda, I like KODO design language, I like Mazda 2, 3, 6, MX-5, CX-5 and now CX-3.
It is quite small in the back but I agree with you that is the only drawback in the papers.
In my country is going to have another one: it will be far more expensive than in North America.

I was so very close to buying the CX-3, but I couldn't get over the smallish feel & the cup holders (cabin layout) It drove better (engine wise) then the Honda HR-V, but the Honda is simply seemed more practical overall. So, I bought the HR-V & I'm happy with it. Also the mid-range trim I was looking @ (Touring model) didn't have fog lights or a sunroof (if that's your thing) I'm having a 3rd party company (Classic Soft Trim) to install leather in my Honda HR-V EX model ($1500.00) Also...I didn't care of the 16" rims on the Touring model. They looked too small IMHO. Great little rig, but the Honda stole the show.

We've had a Fit and a Mazda2 in our family for the past few years. These are the models that the HRV and CX-3 are based on. The Fit is very practical, roomy, and has the wonderful Magic Seat in the back. Other than that, our Mazda2 is the winner, hands down. Smoother, much quieter, much better handling/road feel, and refined switchgear.
They're both zippy around town, but the M2 is just so much better as a fun little car (and easier on fuel). I often compare it to my former Miata. It exudes quality (within reason, it's a subcompact), where the Fit feels like a cheap POS tin can.
The Fit also leaked water from the window seals (saturating the carpet) and cracked body sealant on the roof seams (flooding the spare tire area). Shameful in this day and age, as the car has super low mileage. I spent hours fixing the leaks, as it was off warranty.

One big competitor this car has to deal with, is the Mazda 3. Roomier, similarly priced. AWD is nice, but is it worth sacrificing the practicality? The styling is superb, Mazda is on a roll and can't wait to see what they're going to do next. Wish there was a next gen Mazda 5.

I was never quite sure how this was supposed to compete effectively versus the 3 either. The 3 gets better fuel economy, & more cargo & rear passenger space. And you don't need to go to the mid-level trim just to get an arm rest :P I don't think AWD is worth the compromises.

Thank you very much for such a great review. I specially enjoyed the thorough review of the inside. I am thinking long and hard about buying a new car and has decided to go with Mazda again (own a mazda 3 2005 sedan with lots of rust but perfect working engine) and cannot decide among the Mazda 3 Sedan, Sport or CX-3. They are all incredibly beautiful and a good bang for the buck.... (Honda seems to be copying Mazda for this year's new models). To be honest the CX-3 seems to be the worst bang for the buck out of the 3 models.

the CX-3 looks good, rides and drives really good.
the base model's interior is okay.
if you plan to keep the car for a long time, do have to worry about potential carbon built ups due to Direct Injection.
perfect for people who are not super tall, and want a sporty CUV.
i really don't like how they get you really good on options, just like the Germans. unless you get the base models, it can get really expensive. and #Mazda does depreciate (just) a bit more than #Toyota and #Honda.

i went to a #Mazda drive event, and mazda was keen on pointing out their AWD system always send 1% of power to the back wheel, unlike Subaru's.
(we were like what? symmetrical AWD = full time AWD?)
then mazda pull out two rolling logs, drove the CX3 (and the CrossTrek on them, front wheels). then choke the rear wheels with two blocks. the CX3 got over the choke logs almost immediately, and the CrossTrek didn't do anything until the driver rev the engine to about 2500 RPM. i guess #Subaru don't put their true symmetrical AWD system on all of their vehicles?

nickolastiguan Yeah I was there too, which city did you attend yours in...? I was meh about it, the one thing they could have done to really sell it in my opinion would be to stick a live cam right in that cockpit
for both vehicles and let us see for ourselves.
Just because the guy said he was going 2,500 rpm
with both vehicles with no proof doesn't bode all that much
      for me.
Regardless, I did test-drive it at a dealership a month prior,
then drove the hell out of it at the event and it was a pleasure,
and I don't know about you, but didn't you find those other competitor
vehicles lacking in all phases (handling, braking, IT factor, and suspension on those parking lot tracks don't do much justice).

    • @nickolastiguan
      @nickolastiguan 9 років тому +1

      Edward Truong Calgary.
or let us try it ourselves =D
while i don't believe in that demo fully, it does make me think.
i agree 100%, when it comes to ride and handling, the all new SkyActive Mazda are definitely waaaaay better than its competitors. However, it is a bit more pricey than some of its competitors. the CX5 for example, the GS with the more desire 2.5L is $35k... the base model (with more standard kits) is more comparable to the Rav4 and CRV, but the CX5 will depreciate (just a bit) fast.
at your event, which vehicle got the most hate? it was the Jeep for us lol.

    • @edwardtruong1810
      @edwardtruong1810 9 років тому

Well, bare in mind, that Mazda is a smaller car company and their history lacks the long-standing durability endowment that Honda/Toyota has carried over on an annual basis.
Well, if I can recall correctly, the HRV was the only vehicle that was absent from the attendance - was this the same at your event too...?
And to answer your Q; Overall wise: I would say it was a pretty close tie between the Jeep Renegade and the Subaru Crosstrek, and proudly to say the Nissan Juke was very close in making it a threesome tie to dead last. And that is based purely on driving abilities and mechanics alone, if you wanted to include how their unappealing looks in the evaluation, I wouldn't even put the cars in the same sentence.
I did drive the Nissan Juke and it was pretty meh and eh. I would had more fun driving my parent's old mid 2000s Toyota Corolla than any of the vehicles besides the CX-3. I did drive another car, but unfortunately, I cannot recall and yes it was that forgettable too.
How about you? What cars did you drive?
What were your thoughts on each of them
And did CX-3 leave the competition besides from the participants...?

  • @snakeyscorpio1

I've been at a standstill for a month, trying to decide between this and the mazda 3. AWD would be nice where I am but not a necessity. It's just me using it, and I never really have a bunch to haul. Both cars drive great. I feel the 2.5 in the mazda3 is obv quicker, but this cx3 seems to handle better. The one thing I need to know (here in western canada), is what the resale will be like on the cx3. I have no doubt the hrv resale will be solid. The mazda3 resale is predictable, but with the cx3 being launched here just a year ago, I have no idea how they will hold their value. Thoughts anyone? One day I wake up, it's the 3... the next day, it's a cx3... and back and forth and back and forth, etc, etc. I can't decide. Resale??????

    • @OMGWTFLOLSMH
      @OMGWTFLOLSMH 6 років тому

Are you planning on selling it soon? If not, who cares about resale? Buy a used one if you're worried about depreciation, lots of 2016s out there now. The question is, do you want AWD or not? In western Canada, the answer is yes, even if you're on the coast, it rains a ton and is nice to have.

Also Mazda Mexico is one of those unusual situations where they actually have 2 cars in the top 15 of sales, something they have never achieved in the US, Mexicans looove Mazdas...

+Vaioleto True story... In the first week, the transmission on that CX3 blew like fireworks in Chinatown on the eve of the year of dragon. So much for the unlimited km warranty Mazda is offering on their drivetrains. As for the low rear headroom; My first car was a 1986 mazda 626 hatchback . It handled well with fully adjustable suspension, fully digital gauges, and a killer stock stereo with an amazing factory installed analog equalizer and oscillating heat/ac vents (a feature I have yet to see in any other vehicle). That vehicle was a true Japanese beast without ford fingerprints all over it. But the backseat also had a super low headroom and the car burnt oil like there was no tomorrow. So that low backseat headroom seem to be their trademark. In any case hopefully with ford out of the question mazda can slowly go back to its roots in building drivers' cars instead of force-fed hand me downs from ford.

Not a fan of the leather on the back of the front seats.. Kids in a car seat put their shoes on it and kick it... Ends up marking the leather up
Plastic is so much easier to keep clean, even though it can be uncomfortable for an adult who sits back there with their knees against it
I rarely have any adults in the back of my car anyhow

to me, Volkswagen, Mazada, Subaru, Nissian are competitors because they offer a better driving experience with semi luxury look.
you should not compare honda toyota to those 3. They simply do not have the handling , power ( kinda) , or good fit and finish. I mean even the maintenance is different... for example VW oil change is 15,000kms, brake fluid flush 35,000kms...honda oil change 3-5000 kms brake fluid change 18000kms
yes honda is more reliable but running cost can be same ore even more.... plus Vw is sold worldwide so I would like to see the units sold vs unreliable .
I used to like mazda in the 90's early 2000, their style got to funky for a bit, its looking nice once again....any who my point is I dont know why people hold up a honda to a VW or Mazda there are not apple to apples

Look up used car prices for crv's and RAV 4 and compare with mazdas. You will be shocked by the difference. Many times Mazda's are half the price of Toyotas and Hondas on the used car market

stop asking me to change my name! seems to be more extreme 2010 and older but yes it will be cheaper just not half. In a way they are similar to depreciation on Fords. FOrds depreciate hugely and fast.

      @1232bluejays 9 років тому

stop asking me to change my name! For 2011 the prices look similar but you have to go back further 2010 and more. Most cars are still fairly new then but older and you really see mazda depreciate compared to honda and toyota.

Good review, the only thing that made me cringe was the way he says Mazda - drove me nuts after awhile. I guess that is the Canadian accent coming through? Pronounce it like "Mahz-dah". :-)

    • @OMGWTFLOLSMH

Nothing to do with accents, it's pronounced differently in different parts of the world. Did you know Canadians pronounce "Z" as Zed, not Zee? Does that make you cringe too?

stop asking me to change my name! Well, you would be one of few to say its a deal breaker. I rather have this beautiful beast with no armrest
than having to drive any of the other vehicles in its market.
And I did have the pleasure of driving it with most of those vehicles
in its class and what comes to mind were the Jeep Renegade,
Honda HR-V, Subaru Crosstrek, and I think there is a vehicle or two I am leaving behind. And this is coming from a guy that has a rapidly aging Mazda Tribute that has lost interest in anything Mazda (Miata being the exception) until this CX-3 came out.

David kimautotrader in Ontario look at a 2009 accord Vs 2009 maxda 6 for example. With similar mileage and features there is a least a $3000 difference and many times more. Mazdas depreciate much faster for some reason.
