This is gonna be a lengthy response, but as a black man who is sick and tired of how our "community" operates, I thought it would be fitting to give my response here.
Tess illustrates in a single clip the exact issues I have with the black community. Of all the issues that Larry Elder mentioned here, one of the issues that even Malcolm X brought to question is our lack of responsibility. To put it hood, "it ain't ever our fault." Tess talks about how the welfare system is apparently a tool of systemic racism, despite the fact that most black women have been dependent on the welfare system for years, all of which stems from the lack of black fathers in the home, which is EXACTLY what Larry Elder is pointing out. And instead of connecting the dots and realizing that having black fathers remain with their children would result in less dependency on the welfare system (one which Tess herself said was a tool of systematic racism), she defaults to blaming everything on white people.
I've gotten so sick and tired of this shit. We talk about how "independent" we want to be and that we should be self-reliant in order to improve our community, and yet we both deliberately and subconsciously hide behind white folk every time we hit a barrier. Then we turn fight the fuck around and start voting in white politicians we're hiding behind and start begging for things that we think they can give us. If we want our community to be independent, then we need to start taking responsibility and working to solve the issues *we* placed ourselves in. We can't keep sitting by and blaming white people. The problems are happening in *our* community, and we need to work together to solve them.
Here's the reality, y'all: the increase in crime isn't caused by cops, it's caused by us being told by celebrities and politicians and people like Tess that the game is rigged from the start, and that it's not worth playing fairly, and to just give up and depend on the system. And so we give up like they tell us to, turn to crime and murder, have children that the fathers walk out on, beg welfare for handouts, all while blaming the very same white people they listened to in the first place...only to come RIGHT back around and do it again. This mindset has been going on since Obama's administration, and I'm getting tired of it.
It's this endless Sisyphean cycle that just doesn't end, and will only continue to do so as long as the black community doesn't recognize the bad decisions we collectively make, touch out proverbial balls, and wake up. And yet we never do. It's frustrating and it needs to stop. We need to own up and actually work to better our community. No one's gonna do it unless we lead by example, and only then will be achieve the independence we keep thinking that we have.

Black people also tend to vote based on skin color in certain areas, and those black politicians know just how to pander to the black community. Look at Chicago or Baltimore. Voting in incredibly corrupt black people and it made things so much worse. On top of that, these corrupt black politicians also refuse to take any accountability for the problems they caused.

@@iaintmadatcha "Stop talking about it" meant (paraphrased) "stop saying that someone is 'a black man' or 'a white man' and just see them as a person", because defining people by their skin color, even if done with good intentions (e.g. to highlight who needs help), still reinforces the line between people where someone is assigned a value based on their race.
Of course his statement was way too condensed to be useful without a lot of unpacking, but I'm sure he could elaborate way more on it when he's not on an interview with limited time to tackle several different subjects.

@@iaintmadatcha to be fair to Morgan, he did some unpacking during that interview and was arguing against collectivism in favor of an individualistic view of the world. This has its failings when passing broad legislation but it can influence individuals who try to avoid responsibility. Even then, it would contend with the fact that a desire to avoid responsibility can be inherent in one's personality.
As a Nigerian, that point you bring up about good fathers and families is so true. My grandfather in Nigeria was born into poverty and hardship but he worked hard for years to ensure his children got education and chance at better lives. Sadly, all the effort caused him to die at 58 due to blood pressure complications but he succeeded. All of his kids grew up successful and thrived and this was during the last years of colonialism in my country. Black Americans have no excuse. I and many other Africans, will never understand the propensity for black Americans to embrace the victimhood narrative. Why? Slavery existed everywhere on earth and still sadly exists in Africa but not the USA. So that excuse is dumb. Their race is not an issue, especially considering how Asian-Americans are not white but also the richest ethnic group in the USA and even most African immigrants in the USA tend to do well economically. It's clear that their culture is what matters more. Also, considering how mostly white people are killed by police, even the police brutality excuse is meaningless. Why do they continue to enbrace victimhood despite being citizens of the most prosperous country on earth?! If most of us in Africa had a quarter of their opportunities, we would make the best of it😢

What I find really frustrating is if they were to look at a related country, the UK, they could see that some black immigrants do exceptionally well educationally and others do poorly and the reasons why have a lot to do with culture and family make up. (In this case young girls from certain African countries do far better than average British girls and young boys from the Caribbean do worse, in particular those without father figures)

From what I can gather, Tez is referring to the US federal and state governments, none of which were set up with black involvement.
If this is her argument, it is at least logically consistent and factually correct. However, it seems as though she has defined out of existence any evidence that would _disprove_ her theory. So, yes, _system_ is being used as a synonym for boogeyman.
Her argument seems to be that since the "systems" of this country, which was founded by Englishman, were created by white people, black people will never have any actual power or agency within the system no matter what levels of power and authority they achieve within it. She's created a position that is safe and unassailable, since we can't go back in time and change what the color of the founding fathers' skin was. It is also completely flaccid since the only thing it achieves is the perpetuation of the victimhood complex that Larry Elder is trying to fight. Logically the only outcome of Tez's line of thinking is that the entire US government needs to be overthrown and a new system of government installed that was created by black people in order for black people to have real power and agency over their own lives
Love Larry Elder. If any of y'all have the time, listen to his story about repairing his relationship with his father and it is one of the most powerful stories of personal triumph I've had inspire me.

She won’t. Black Americans, in general, only want look at the world through the lens of race and perpetual victimhood. This gives them an out or an excuse as to why so many things have gone wrong. The problem is that the excuses are starting to wear thin and soon no one is going to care. I say this as a black woman who has tried to talk to other black women, and some black men about having HONEST conversations.
I find that one of the best ways to find out how well fleshed out a person's opinions are is to simply ask them to explain them in detail.
You would be surprised how many people can't do this.

Life is full of choices. And choices have rewards, or consequence. And taking personal responsibility for our choices in life, is one of the keys to personal fulfillment.
Tess is insufferably caught in a victimhood cycle. It’s really sad. I feel sorry for her. She could be a strong, influential leader but instead chooses to remain a victim because “they don’t own the system”.

The genius of his speech is in that it applies universally between different races. Literally, skin color ≠ content of character. That woman is the exact reason I just don't bother arguing with Democrats at all.
She wasn't interested in having discourse, she was interested in "gachas" and was constantly thinking of a way to pigeonhole Larry as "That Guy" the entire conversation.
Her arguments weren't of substance, they were of condescension and built on the idea that she could crumble his entire position if she gets him to say one thing, SHOWING that she had no earnest investment in discourse which is why the moment Larry finally said "Okay, they were white" she just shut the conversation down like nothing else about the context mattered.
And then, the part where I personally would have just walked out of the room, she started verbally berating him and saying "Tell me this", "Tell me that" while also TALKING OVER HIM NOT ALLOWING HIM TO TELL HER ANYTHING AT ALL because she was so wrapped up in being on the aggression (AKA, a sign that her argument was rooted in ego, not honesty) that she genuinely forgot she wasn't the only voice there. And then, when Larry FINALLY gets his words out and just starts listing examples, it turns into "That's not an example"; literally controlling the parameters of argument and shifting the goalpost as needed to prevent the other team from landing anything.
These are all signs that the other person wants to "win" the conversation and will turn it into an argument no matter what. There's no point in talking to these people. Frankly, I'd rather just send them to the more culturally backwards country possible so they can learn what real racism looks like.

Jonathan Haidt wrote a book called _The Righteous Mind_ where he tackles issues of morality from a psychological perspective. He addresses how people will rarely be convinced by appeals to reason or judgement, no matter how strong your factual argument. Instead, people are convinced by appeals to their intuition, their gut reaction to an issue. This is why the Left has convinced so many people of these issues, because they tell more compelling stories.
Note that Tez is also delivering her lines from a distance. Easy to be aggressive when on Zoom. Charlemagne disagrees just as much as Tez but he carried his argument more succinctly and clearly less aggressive than Tez. Larry shows no physical aggression, but Charlemagne knows to carry his own argument with some level of class when the guy demonstrating the opposite viewpoint is within punching distance.

I believe what Larry is saying because it's the same issues in white communities. I live in such a community and I see it everyday, kids with no fathers. Larry has a lot of good advice that we could all benefit from.

Seriously... To anyone who doesn't think having an intact family with a father in the home is important, just ask a man who grew up without his father. I promise you he will have countless examples of how his absence harmed his life.
Hell I'm one of them - thankfully I feel like I've finally caught up on all the things I should've learned at 36 now, but the effect was profound. I spent a lot of time as a young man & in my 20s just lost because I never had someone to teach me all of the requirements for how to be a man, she lessons about taking accountability in my life. I'm proud of myself that I recognized what was wrong and set out to improve myself to make up for it, but I was behind in life for a long time - many men won't ever catch up.
@@j.l.4054 I live in a low income, single mother area and many of the boys are ending up doing *rugs, are practically feral, hang with gangs, carrying items to harm people, vandalise ect. Often end up in the care system because their mothers are also abusing substances. The most stable families in the neighborhood are the ones who have a father in the household. I'm not saying that it's true of every household but it is for the majority in the area. I'm really happy you had a good experience.

Two things useful to this discussion:
1) "The Righteous Mind" by Jonathan Haidt (amongst other sources) lays out how we are very unlikely to change our minds based on logical argument, unless our emotions are first changed.
2) As Larry Elder points out here, and Mr Beat pointed out in his video "What is Systemic Racism?" - systemic racism has nothing to do with ACTUAL racism, and is almost entirely an effect of wealth inequality and social phenomena (e.g. fatherlessness). So anyone claiming systemic racism has anything to do with racial bias.....is perpetuating systemic racism. Talk about spectacular own goals.
Larry handled this aggressive interview with such grace and poise! It just goes to show how intoxicating the victim mentality really is. I'd be surprised if any viewers/fans of Charlemagne or Tez changed their opinion.

Hearing Tess focus, to the exclusion of all else, on 'the system' made me realize she's right, but for the wrong reason. Here's the punchline: The government is NOT your friend. It is perfectly happy to have you dependent upon it for food, shelter, and income. The only thing it asks in return is complete ownership of you, your family, and everything you own. As Larry tried to tell her, no one is being forced to get on government assistance, it is all voluntary. People need to understand one important fact: NOTHING IS FREE....ESPECIALLY FREEDOM.
These are people that profit and benefit off of the victim mentality. When confronted with the truth, of course they will ignore it. Because they make more money spreading hate than they do spreading the truth.

I’ve said this to my own sister when she said “the system is against me”
I responded “what is the system?, is it our countries medical system, is it the judicial system, the Housing, which system are you talking about. Because our government is broken down into several departments and each one is managed by a different person”
She didn’t know how to answer. I followed up
“You can’t blame something unless you know exactly who’s at fault and you can’t hope to beat an enemy unless you know what and who they are and how it functions. If you have an issue, figure out how to fix it and what you need to do and hold yourself accountable for your own actions.”
At this point, Larry Elder is just spitting facts. It's undeniable at this point.

Instead of bringing up people in positions of power to prove his point, Larry should have said something like "Okay, hypothetically, what system would you like black people to set up?". Chances are she'd say something about socialism and then he could have debated her from that angle.

I watched this interview when it happened and it was such a struggle to hang in there. Elder is wildly regarded as an Uncle Tom by his own community. So as a middle aged American I don’t give a flying F about other “community’s” anymore. You can lead a horse to water but can’t force them to drink. I only care about my wife and kids and my immediate family. I vote in the best interest of them and no one else. My empathy has been literally destroyed by listening to conversations like the one you are sighting here and I myself don’t care anymore. And the longer you focus on this topic you too will end up feeling the same so good luck with that.

Most effective forms of persuasion require an understanding of the opposite pov, which can most easily be built by regularly being challenged. Current extremes of the political spectrum seen to have forgotten this
Beyond just forgetting that, the problem is that most of those extreme people don't even want to try, because that means they have to answers questions and counter arguments, instead they just want to throw their opinion at you until you accept it. They don't want to persuade, they want to indoctrinate, because that's a one way street where they never have to think about or question anything, especially not their own beliefs.

You become in charge by creating the system. Tez believes the US federal and state governments have an essential quality that favors European-Americans, and this cannot be changed. No, I am not joking.
It can look like it does, but imo, in reality, systems generally favour the one(s) in power -- whether said powerful people are white, black, or otherwise. And regardless of how their power came to be (whether they're in power because they're the majority, or strongest or most ruthless, etc.). And whether the ones currently in power are the ones who created the currently-used systems or not. That's it. Some times the favouritism is overt, open and unashamed, others it is subtle and hidden and denied. But people in power favour themselves today. And they favour favouring themselves tomorrow, so they can remain in power to do self-focused favouring the day after that, too. And that's unlikely to change until they're made to, because 99.9% of the time no one does what they don't want to do if they don't have to.
Accidentally hit enter too soon -- but to conclude, it isn't a system that favours, it's people. The system *shows* (blatantly or otherwise) favour that's been built in, the bias towards the powerful, influential, etc. ones. But there's no magic-cure fail-safe system that *can't* be bent into a shape more pleasing towards people who are corrupt enough to do the bending.

I live in Australia and in 2023 we were luckily able to defeat the proposed Voice to Parliament, which would have seen a change to our Constitution enshrining a race-based committee with the power to challenge any proposed or existing legislation that affected indigenous citizens, which is ALL legislation.
Many of its most prominent advocates had open links to the Communist Party of Australia. Many of their arguments are exactly the same infantilizing narratives you point to in your excellent video. Again, we were luckily able to defeat it, as most Australians did not want Australia divided along racial lines.
Keep up the great work. There is more that connects us than separates us, and we should keep that message going 🙂

Leftist ideology is pretty straight forward and not terribly difficult to dismantle, in spite of the intellectual gravity it's high-priests, priestesses, and prophets try to assign to it. The argument that woman is making is as old as the French Revolution. In order to get the outcome you want you have to tear down the existing system and replace it with something else. It's why she keeps returning to the idea. It's how Marxist agitators and community organizers have been trained for more than a century. There is no interest in working within or trying to reform a system because the goal is the acquisition of power, not some pie-in-the-sky utopia where social justice and equality rule the day. The powers-that-be-and wannabe know that is mere agitprop for the masses. Power and control. That is what that young lady is arguing for, nothing more, nothing less. The machinations have been altered but the premise remains the same. For Marx the struggle revolved around economics and the elimination of the Superstructure, the system the bourgeoisie put in place to manipulate, exploit, and control the proletariat.
For today's woke-set, the struggle is cultural and revolves around white privilege and the destruction of the patriarchy, the system put in place by white men to control women and people of color. That's why the people on that panel weren't interested in Larry's facts on poverty. They wanted to assign blame, not look at root causes or solve problems. For some of them I imagine it is simply the old race baiting routine, a way to make a buck off of people's grievances. But for that young lady you can tell there is more to it. She is a true believer and sees herself as part of the vanguard that will usher in the new order where her and her ilk get to be on top. True believers won their share of mini-revolutions in the 20th Century and their legacy is upwards of one hundred million marked and unmarked graves.
Before you take on an enemy you have to understand who you are up against, what the rules of engagement are, and the nature of the battlefield. You can climb the highest mountain and yell facts until you are blue in the face but as long as the other side wins the war of emotion and captures the souls of their minions, those facts won't amount to a hill of beans. It's not that that young lady didn't want to hear Larry's argument, it's that she didn't want her audience to hear it. Like I say, they aren't hard to understand and for the most part they aren't terribly clever. But they are loud, and they are determined, and zealots are a tough bunch to take on. Keep that in mind and understand which power is really pulling the strings, who it is they actually serve, knowingly or unknowingly. I know, it's a long post and most won't take the time to read it, but at least take the time to learn who it is you are truly up against, because it's not that bunch.
This is why I look up to Larry Elder. I'm so sick of race and gender being weaponized to shut down dialogue and conversation. Its literally creating a divide in our country and if it isn't stopped, then we'll end up back at Jim Crow Laws and Segregation all over again.

It's crazy to think that if 13% of the population wasn't then violent crime would drop by half. It's crazy how we like to blame blue cities in blue policies, but the number one correlation is black population. Is it possible that black culture is incompatible with Western culture? The same as Middle Eastern culture seems to be incompatible with Western culture. Why is it that there are no first world African countries? Is that also systemic racism? Culture is the problem not race. The fatherless household in the black community is a cultural problem, but the people that practice this culture are the ones that have to change.

???? no, because as Elder states, the black family was fine before the welfare state so it's not "their" culture that is a problem. It's a problem of the current socio political climate that the US government accidentally created with the best of intentions. And there are no first world African countries for a ton of different reasons some of which are even anthropological.

When people have forfeited responsibility and choose to be blind it becomes impossible for an outsider to open their eyes. There's probably a bigger chance that those who refuse to change their mind despite evidence to the contrary are more loyal to their ideology than to the actual solving of the problem. You see when we assume a certain worldview we then attach our ability to perceive it to a layer of pride and accomplishment. When someone comes along and shows us evidence that says we got it all wrong it becomes an attack not only of our understanding of the world but it also gets viewed as a personal attack on our intellect. This is why humility is so important for people to practice in life because it allows us to clear a space to pivot and adjust when more evidence is found. Like the saying "the only thing i know is that i know nothing", this is an acknowledgment of how limited we are with information and what is knowable. You can only remain teachable if you have humility. When you are fighting against truth like the person in this video you are going down a path of foolishness and a dead-end. She will not thrive with viewing the world as though she has no agency because everything is being done TO her. Even if it were true it still wouldn't be the way to view things because then you ensure that nothing will change unless its done for you because by nature a victim has inly the ability to be further victimized.

Larry Elder is totally right. I did many shit in my youth. But i always had more fear of my father to find out than the police.
While it's extremely important to "steel man" contrary points of view, something we all could get better at is examining our own ideas, checking them for flaws. Often when edit our beliefs, those of others gain clarity--at least to us.

A person who is unwilling to listen or to be challenged cannot learn, a person who has to shout down their opponent is afraid of the truth, a person who blames others for the situation they find themself in is unwilling to make change for themself... those that came before us acknowedged their obligation to society and worked to effect positive change, those today know their rights but not their obligation....

I agree with him and will add that it is fast becoming the problem of ALL - fatherless families. I am not putting down females as I am one. The SAME thing is also happening to women in general now - they are told that they are ALL victims to men. I am a white; an SA/DV Survivor; and a single Mother - what I am NOT is an eternal victim; what I have NOT been is overly dependent on the welfare system (although for a brief time I did utilize it when I left my abusive husband with my two month old daughter). I do en a house; a car; and my daughter is a healthy individual - but a lot of that had to do with my refusal to believe I couldn’t/I was a victim so no sense in trying.

If I were black, I would absolutely despise the lady's viewpoint. The notion that I was born and kept down is ludicrous and without basis in any actual fact. I would also resent the blind insistence I would fail no matter what I did because the unseen evil was keeping me down. Every social group does themselves disservice irrespective of skin colour, that's why you identify it and fix it. Families are vital. Girl bosses are not, 75 percent of the population in prison was raised by a girl boss....In a world where Thomas Sowell exists this woman has all the intellectual acumen of a minnow. Can you change people's mind? Sure, you can. Just don't expect them to switch their opinion immediately. Give them time to adjust. Don't push them hard. Just be persistent. You also wouldn't accept a completely different opinion just because the other person is pushing you to it. People have an ego. We may complain that ego is obstructing an opinion exchange, but we all have it. Respect it and their ego will appreciate it.
And keep discussing even with a person that would never ever accept anything you said. You may not convince the other person, but as long as there is an audience listening to both of you, you can convince some of them. Repeat it several times and those closeminded fanatics will remain alone and powerless.
Larry Elder may have been frustrated by feeling of a complete pointlessness of talking to that woman, but here we are, reflecting on who of them had a point and why. So, his effort wasn't pointless.
So when I worked for the State of TN Health and Human Services Department I noticed that per the regs; single women with kids had a MUCH easier time qualifying for health benefits while a married couple with kids, living under the same roof, had a much harder time qualifying for the same tax payor financed health insurance. It became a case of if you were poor and you wanted your kids to be able to have regular doctor visits then the father couldn't live with the Mom and kids. So in that sense the government was creating incentives for single mom households. That ill-informed policy (created by wealthy out of touch protestants-because they think Jesus hates poor people, just ask Marsha Blackburn, R-TN) created many single mother households, regardless of race. If you want to meet the results of that policy just drive around the outskirts of any larger city in Tennessee. And keep your doors locked. Otherwise those po' Millenials and Zoomers will haul you out and steal the fillings out of your teeth. And maybe worse.
