The dust that Pancho bit down south/ended up in Lefty's mouth....this is one of the most brilliant lyrics I've ever heard.
What a tragic tale of betrayal and regret. Poor Lefty has to live with what he did, well into old age in the cold of Cleveland.
love your elvis comments and i love your reaction to van zandt! thank you!
best songwriter that ever wrote a song....
Best songwriter not enough people know about
The genre he does is called Americana. Took me way too long to realize that about him and others (like John Prine, Todd Snider, some Bob Dylan).
Todd Snider is outstanding
grew up on John Prine. talk about great lyrics. you would love it. try illegal smile
Genius does not begin to describe Townes' songwriting. This song, "Flying Shoes", "Rake" and the entire second album titled "Our Mother the Mountain" represent the best songwriting of the genre ever. I love later Townes, as well, but his sublime mixture of Dylan, Lightnin' Hopkins, Friedriche Nietzche is never matched again by him or anyone else. Check 'em out.
*Rory.* If you're up for it, a few more artists in the 'roots-influenced' bluegrass/blues/Americana/folk vein for you to consider:
*Bonnie Raitt* A few favorites:
"Angel from Montgomery" -
ua-cam.com/video/toJ3ZYWRh24/v-deo.html (Written by the great John Prine, but even he would agree that this is the best version of the song)
and
"I Can't Make You Love Me" (her monster hit from the early '90s, and one of my favorites)

Also:
-Wounded Heart
-Something to Talk About
-Nick of Time
*Lyle Lovett* - v quirky artist, kind of defies genre
"Here I Am" - (you definitely need the lyrics version of this song to keep up.)

Some other picks here:
-She's Already Made up Her Mind
-That's Right You're Not From Texas
-If I Had A Boat
-Church
Nice!! “Marie” will break your heart man. Steve Earle once said that Townes VanZandt was the greatest songwriter ever and he’d say it standing on Bob Dylan’s coffee table.
Thank you for these! I've been waiting for a reactor to really appreciate and understand Townes and be willing to take a deep look into his music. A few other suggestions for you: "To Live Is to Fly", "Rex's Blues", "Highway Kind", "Flyin' Shoes", "Kathleen". That's just some of my favorites, but his catalogue is so large, I'm sure someone else's list might be completely different.
Snowin' On Raton, Marie, Waitin Around To Die (heart worn highways version) Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold, If I Needed You, St. John The Gambler, Rake In The Young Man, Hell his whole catalouge.
His friend Steve Earle is good, too.
Townes is the best songwriter to ever do it. Kris Kristoffersen agrees.
This is another folk legend and unless you're a folk music fan, may not have heard his music "Dave Van Ronk - St. James Infirmary" Van Ronk was an important figure in the American folk music revival, and New York City's Greenwich Village scene in the 1960's. He was nicknamed "The Mayor of MacDougal Street." Van Ronk's work ranged from old English ballads to blues, gospel, and rock, New Orleans jazz and swing. If you enjoy folk music, then this is another folk purist to get to know. Here's one of his songs from his album "In The Tradition" (with the Red Onion Jazz Band) "Dave Van Ronk - Death Letter Blues" his ability to fuse these styles together is true talent and he was gifted with an incredible ability to tell some amazing stories with that gloriously gruff voice...magical stuff🔥🎶🤗
Now that you know about Townes, you'll notice his songs in movies and it'll have you grinning. His songs will creep up in movies..it's fkn great. His songs are in a great Colin Farrell film.
Please check out Will Oldham/Bonnie Prince Billy//Palace Bros. - all same guy. Modern day Townes (in a way) in my opinion!
some people will rob you with a stone and others with a hammer and chisel. Fred Flintsone
Great songwriter. Booze did him in.
He suffered from bi-polar depression. When he was young, doctors gave him the, now discredited, insulin shock therapy which left him damaged in several ways, including erasing most of his long-term memory & leaving him unable to form deep emotional attachments. He ended up addicted to drugs & alcohol. Those & years of hard living took his life.
He couldn't sing for shxt. He said that, himself. His songwriting was godly.
you focused on the " out of kindness i suppose " line but missed the point entirely ... federalis are NOT kind . mexican police were not known for their kindness ... it was a sarcastic joke about their excuses for not catching him ... lol
That was awesome! I've only grown up hearing it as a duet between 2 of my favorites, Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard. I think I may like this rendition better!
There's a song called Seven Spanish Angels, written and performed by Ray Charles, ft. Willie Nelson. Absolutely beautiful & well worth checking out.
Absolutely, this is the vastly superior version. Willie even changed one of the lyrics and killed the double-meaning.
Bad People… so right! Slip away RUINS the story.
