One of the great American folk songs of all times. You lads did a great job on it. I don't think the song has been forgotten here. My take on the song, for what it is worth, is that Lefty sold out Pancho to the Federales. But spare a prayer for Lefty too, he only did what he had to do. And now he's grown old.
Definitely when you read the lyrics as text, there's a strong implication that Lefty sells Pancho out, possibly kills him, steals from him and heads off the day Pancho is buried. Especially because Townes writes the chorus in the singular - they only let 'him' slip away - when the song's about the pair. Certainly strong hints at the split between the pair.
