Unboxing Alabama: What It's Like Living In Alabama

  • Is everyone in Alabama a redneck?
Is everyone in Alabama a bible thumper?
And is everyone in Alabama poor and fat?
Those are some terrible stereotypes, but we WILL address that and a whole lot more. So let’s drank some moonshine and listen to some Hank Jr. We’re fixinto unbox the state of Alabama!
Ahh what do you know. It’s a college football game. But not just ANY college football game. No siree. This is THE college football game. This is The IRON bowl. When Alabama plays Auburn every fall, you might as well shut the whole damn state down. It’s a big deal in these parts. Just about every single person in this state has a stake in the winner of The Iron Bowl. And you have to choose between these two teams. The winner gets bragging rights for a whole year.
If you’re all Roll Tide or all about War Eagle - well, that’s gonna define who you are as an Alabaman. People don’t care about where you work or where your home town is. It’s Auburn or Alabama. That’s it. And the allegiance to these teams is enough to cause a damn divorce.
Yeah, college football is bigger in this state than you could imagine. Alabama usually wins this game, but sometimes Auburn..uh oh. Damn. What am I gonna do for the next year. Looking down at laptop shaking head.
Well hell with this college football stuff. I don’t even like football anyways. I’m never watching another damn game again. Alabama has a lot of stuff to do, and has lots of various areas to live and is probably different than you thought. If you’re thinking about moving here, there’s a lot you should know about Alabama. That way you don’t have to annoy people at Piggly Wiggly with all your annoying questions.
    This is Alabama.

Jim, I agree. Nick Johnson is one intelligent guy, and he treats all areas of our Country the same....the good and the bad. His assessments are fair. The manner in which he does so is humorous as heck. I wish I could say the same for some other "experts." BTW, I also live in Alabama. Other than some of our State level politicians, we have good folks here. At least our Politicians aren't as notorious as SOME of those from the West Coast. I have traveled extensively, and I am truly concerned about the future of California. Between the politics, and the San Andreas Fault, I see little hope of that State recovering. I hope I am wrong.

@@codysmith1915 I wouldn’t use this guys advice on anything. He makes some good points but he is way off on others. Just watch your states “unboxing video” and you’ll see.
For instance some of the cities he showed like Dothan, he showed the poorest section of the city. It’s the south side (inside circle) and oldest part of the city. Very poor people live on that side of town. The west side of Dothan there are brand new homes (outside circle) for 175k. The north side is nice but a little older. The east side has tons of new homes and giant houses.
UFC also started in Dothan Alabama.
I’ve watched a lot of these videos and after watching my home states I’m now taking his points with a grain of salt. Kind of upsetting because I’m in a similar situation to you looking for places to move to.

Ok, ok. As an Alabaman, I’m taking a lot of what you said in stride. First off, I’m from Gadsden and lived there until I was 19. I have also lived in Tuscaloosa, New Orleans (proper) , Charlotte, NC, Atlanta (proper), Fall Church, VA (10 miles from the White House), and Sacramento (proper). I moved back to Gadsden (with no intentions of staying) and met my husband, had two kids, and now 13 years later, I’m moving to Michigan (where my husband is from). The very first thing I would like to say is….Alabama is THE MOST BEAUTIFUL state that I have EVER lived in. The problem with Alabama lies in the fact we don’t “do” change well. BUT…I have started seeing changes. Especially in the last 5-10 years. If we can become more progressive, this will be a premiere state. My in-laws absolutely LOVE coming here to visit. We live a mile from Noccalula Falls, which is absolutely gorgeous. My friends actually worked really hard to create extensive biking and hiking trails at/around the Falls. The Noccalula Falls area of Gadsden is an untapped gold mine. It WILL explode. Also, you did the state dirty on food. I’m a total foodie. I love Middle Eastern foods of all kinds, African food…and SOUTHERN FOOD. Omg. Mobile. Bye. I should have started a blog about our family food journey through Mobile. Anyways. I think you were fair, but you left out A LOT of the good, which is the food, the overall hospitality of the people (regardless of whether or not you think it’s fake or guarded is WAAAAAY more preferable to almost getting curb stomped in a Philly or Flint bar….or even going to the market in Falls Church). My husband, the Michigander has LOVED getting to know our culture and totally embraced it. Also, the Alabama Coast may be the prettiest beaches I have personally ever seen. Even in the Caribbean. Those sugar beaches, tho.

Nick, I particularly enjoyed the interview with the gentleman you called the Alabama native. He was the first Christian I have heard talk in a while. He’s right. The, “health, wealth and prosperity,” people within the evangelical Christian communities have polluted the well with ego driven narcissistic ideals too easily adopted by those within Christian communities. It’s unfortunate because there are some really really good people in the evangelical Christian communities. Great video.

I was born and raised in Alexander City ,Alabama. Our state gets so many bad wraps from the media and people who live in places like San Francisco and NewYork City two of the biggest Sh-t holes in the country . Alabama is probably the leading manufacturer of Automobiles in the country and does have some of the prettiest beaches in the world . California doesn't have a beach that compares with Alabama's beaches . Huntsville as you mentioned is one of the leading Tech centers in USA .The northern part of the state is as beautiful as anything you'll find anywhere .A trip to Cheaha Mountain or Noccalulu Falls will be worth anyone's time. It has the most beautiful lakes one of which is Lake Martin , Lake Martin is one the leading retirement places in the country. I live about 5 miles from this beautiful Lake .The beauty of our state and the genuine hospitality of its people makes it a great place to live. I think you did a pretty good job . Personally I wouldn't want to live anywhere else. And football is very popular here . WAR Eagle

    Nick Hi.
There is a section of Alabama that's incredible.
Camden Alabama in Wilcox County is improving dramatically.
The people of Camden decided 5 years ago to beautify. Not by state or government help. The people of Camden have spent millions over the past 5 years to improve.
The town is becoming gorgeous. Yes there's still bad situations of poverty. It takes time to help everyone. In 5 more years you will have a hard time finding a falling down property in Camden.
Things are looking up here. Thanks for the video.

Mardi Gras started in Mobile? What the. . . . I even knew a guy from Mobile in college (he was the director of the gospel choir I was in), and I had never heard about that. You see, Nick, your videos have these delightful nuggets of information people almost certainly otherwise wouldn't know about. I also love that you mentioned the unclaimed luggage store (although I had heard of that one before). I'm happy with just seeing footage of it, though. I feel like getting that luggage might come with some bad karma. . . . I find it curious that Huntsville sounds cosmopolitan, yet has remained red politically. And it's just plain weird that Montgomery and Birmingham are like opposites in every way. Sounds like Alabamans present a sort of southern flavor of "Minnesota nice." That would probably get on my nerves. I like genuine people. And God bless Don. He is SO right that "Christian" leaders have drifted SO far from what Jesus Christ preached. Thanks for another excellent video, Nick. Here's to a round of hush puppies and fried green tomatoes at Mike's Barbecue!

She could have easily said she’s from the outskirts and doesn’t come to B’ham and kept it pushing.
