Unboxing Oregon: What It's Like Living In Oregon

- Is everyone in Oregon a hippie?
Does Oregon have the prettiest coast in the country?
And is Portland really weird?
We’ll answer those questions and more! So put the umbrella away - cause Oregon natives don’t use those stupid things. We’re gonna unbox the state or Oregon! And I’m totally wearing skinny jeans right now. Like SO skinny jeans. I can barely move. But it’s awesome.
Wow. Look at this. The Oregon coastline. Such a pretty place. This rugged coastline might be the most stunningly beautiful stretch of coast in the entire country. It’s not always sunny here, but this coast is truly one of a kind. But of course, Oregon isn’t all pretty coastline. Actually, ecologically, Oregon is one of the most diverse states in the country. And depending on where you live, the PEOPLE are different too. To truly understand Oregon, we need to look at the entire state’s various regions, and understand what each area is like to live in.
This is Oregon. It’s a pretty big state - in size, it ranks 9th biggest in terms of square miles. There’s a lot of parts of the state that are very crowded, and many parts that are really isolated. Like over here. We’ll begin in Eastern Oregon.

Homeless people
Cowboys hippies
It is such a big state and there is so much to see but there’s issues
There’s a lot of small towns where there’s folks who don’t want to be noticed
There’s a lot of Portland people who just want the world to notice
All the things they do in Portland is to be themselves but always
Others in the state are like can’t we just live our lives in solace?
It’s a state of drugs but there’s more to it than that
Oregon is complicated
Hipsters ranchers mountains beaches skiers vegans gays and freaks
There’s a different feel here just take a trip with me and see
Waterfalls and ocean cliffs and forests deep with lots of trees
Some wear wranglers some wear suits and then there’s those in skinny jeans

Everbody: Portland is a hell hole
Me living in baltimore: that seems like a nice place
Yeah right?
To be honest, it's not what it seems like based off the publicity. I've been there 3 times this year, and it seemed perfectly normal.
Dam it
It's not. I've lived here my whole life. Yeah, there is a homeless problem. But there's a homeless situation everywhere. The only reason people keep harping on it, is because the city has grown so much so rapidly you can't put a blind eye to it.
@CashhWashington Sorry buddy I guess there's definitely always worse💔
I've lived in Oregon for 50 years. I've been all over the state. Your description of regions was good as well as the homeless situation. That seems to be happening most everywhere these days. One thing you left out is wherever you go in Oregon people pretty much go about their business, live and let live and don't get in each others face.
Correction, homeless camps are prevalent in blue states.
Do they respect and preserve history in Oregon?
@traceytrotter9934
Ones who care about history, yes.
@@spankduncan1114 Good to know, thank you.
@spankduncan1114 I want to move to Oregon this year...I'm retired Navy...going out there this upcoming April to look at areas and real estate...I would really love your advice...do you have an email or another way I can ask you ALOT of questions?
Bend, Oregon is also home to the last Blockbuster in existence.
I know that sucks
@Michael Ardenté haha same
Been there it's cool
I thought that was in alaska...
There were a couple in Alaska@@drhexagonapus, but they closed. Now it's just the one in Oregon.
I miss Portland and Seattle of the 1990s. This was such a great region.
Everything was better then
@@NickJohnson except for the crime rate
Here here!
It was bad then, I got shot twice when I was 14 in Portland...(attempted robbery) Like wtf would a 14 yr old IN THE 90'S have to rob? that's when I moved out to "the sticks" till after I graduated and got some college...moved back into Portland area....Moved back to the sticks a short time later due to insane high crime around 2004
I wasn’t born yet 👀 lol
My dad said back in the 90s Portland used to be alright. But since like 2005 it got all fucked up.
How?
Can relate
Yea portland was amazing in 90s I agree. I moved away in 2003, so sad to see my city become what it is now
Yeah that when the Californians started taking over Oregon. They’ve basically ruined it.
@@FukaiKokoro get used to it. California starts all the trends. Lots of new immigrants pouring into California to live the American dream. They will bring lots of new changes over time. Idk why I'm watching this... I literally live here and know all this. Oh well, let's watch it anyways

Keep Portland Weird.
We're a Pioneering state built by pioneers. No pioneering spirit ?
👍Fine with us if you stay put.👍
@@youdonthavetoreadthispost.5850 Washington State and Oregon have a lot of similarities switching to Eastern versus the western side of both States
@@206remyboyz7 Indeed, I've travelled both. That commonality extends to politics and divides the population centers from the rural east. Bend is considered to be the most Oregonian city in the state. I agree with that assessment. 👍

Agreed. Native here
Yeah me too. Lived outside of Springfield and went there last summer. Not the same.
What has changed?
I love living in Oregon! Born and raised! I have spent time all over the state! Central Oregon is absolutely beautiful! Oregon Coast is just as beautiful! Eastern Oregon is great as well! We have stunning views and stunning natural mountains and waterfalls!
Agreed!!
The countryside is absolutely gorgeous. The cities and towns are falling apart. They're absolutely decimated.
I agree with you on the topic of Oregon I personally love the state
@@yelenapsalm2173 is it very expensive as far as rent?
I agree… stay positive and glean the good! There are still plenty of good things to enjoy here.
Lived in the valley for 13 years and love it. Wouldn't live anywhere else. It is incredibly gorgeous and the summers are awesome. Name one state that doesn't have their problems, wacked people and crazy weather. Oregon is just a reflection of the entire country but IMHO it's the best of the worst.
How much is the cost of living
I see you haven’t been to many places but Dem run cities
agree. I have lived in over 6 states. There is not one state in this country that is not having some sort of friction. Cost of living is rising everywhere. education, healthcare, taxes, civil rights are on the table for every community. I am in Tx now. We have 8000 in Houston homeless, but there is a real sense of community and pride here. There are very wealthy people and folks barely making ends meet. That is just how life is in America. Lots of folks move here despite those problems, because there are plenty of jobs
@@ssoma151 Im conservative, native Oregonian born & raised Willamette Valley, its beautiful, although we have our problems with democratic crap, but were fighting against it. Thats what the " Greater Idaho" movement is about. We are natives, musicians, artists, naturalists, farmers, loggers, ranchers, fishers, agriculturalists, and buisness savy people fighting the leftists just like most other states that the globalists have infiltrated. Read your history about Oregon, were still here, were still that! Most of us are not snobs, or the pewk he shows in this video!!!
@@mermaidlu5125 Well rent/home owning is expensive but we have one of the higher minimum wages in the country and we don't have sales tax so it tends to event things out and makes living a bit better than in Cali, Washington, Arkansas, Arizona, etc.
Love your videos, this one was so accurate and I learned a lot of new stuff, too.
Good!
Lived in Portland my whole life, and you are spot on about everything especially the drug and homeless problem. It really gets over looked until your downtown or SE
I grew up in SE and went to hs freshman year downtown in the 90’s before we moved away. I’m blown away by how it looks now and how different it is! So sad. :(
Thanks for the great video Nick. I am seeing and learning all about states through your vids. Thanks!
That windsurfer was hilarious
Lived in Oregon most of my life, everything in this video is spot on!
Only non-native oregonians say "the five" 😂
Locals say "i-5"
That's because locals are idiots and should just say "the" like the rest of the country. 😂 It's an interstate highway, we get it. Nobody cares.
Because is more highways in other states especially east coast
A couple more comments about this... First, I am a native Oregonian. Second, I lived for a while in other states and learned that everyone else just says "the". Third, if you wanna be a true Oregon purist then you should just call it "the freeway". When I was growing up in Oregon that's what everybody called it because it is literally the only freeway in most of the state. When communicating directions to someone nobody ever said "do I need to take i-5?" Everyone would just say "do I need to take the freeway to get there?" There you go.
I say the 5 - a local
Yep I-5
Actually living there for many years, I gotta say, all I see is trees and farms and gorgeous mountains when we go down the side roads. The ugliness is sad. But OR is still beautiful beyond belief.
I love your videos!!! I grew up in Lake Oswego, suburb of Portland and an amazing place to grow up. It is sad to see all the chaos, conflict and craziness!
Sw portland here (kinda in tigard)
It really is
Not to be weird, but I really like you 😆 The things you say, how you say them, the inflections in your voice, what things you point out about each state that we're all thinkin'... I'm laughing almost the whole time when I watch a video and I'm still learning a lot too. Nice job, thank you for all this work!! It's helping me decide which states I'd be interested in next and I'm really enjoying it. All the best to you!! 😊
I agree 💯
EXCELLENT summary! I've lived in Oregon my entire life except 7 years in Vancouver(shhh). I've lived in Bend, Burns, Coquille, Roseburg, Medford, Beaverton, Gresham, Salem, Silverton and some other places. You captured our BEAUTIFUL bipolar state very well.
Dude, please take a bow. Excellent video!
I've always enjoyed going to Lincoln City. Stayed overnight in the hotels and casino. Then a day at the beach with the family.
I live outside of lincoln city it's better at the beach Chinook winds motto that's my tribes casino
Lived in Lincoln City for about 8 yrs. ..as a retiree...it was great. Waterfalls nearby. Trails galore, and awesome coastline open to everyone.... and lots of retirees. Portland was known for it's diversity of people. From one extreme to another. The nature side of the land was absolutely beautiful. What a calamity looking for a place to ruin.
I live and work in Lincoln City. I have worked at the Casino for 25 years, (Started the day we opened). I absolutely love everything about working there. I love how the tribe takes care of us; I love the people that I get to meet. Everyone is like family. I am very blessed and very grateful. ❤❤🥰😇🙏👍
The casino is so fun, the Oregon coast is amazing
Every time I've gone to Lincoln city as an adult...I bought a Lincoln...Seems normal to me.
Your videos are so good, Nick! Thank you.

It’s because too many people moving here, forcing prices to go sky high on everything. Many life long locals can’t afford to stay. There is a major housing crisis.
This is what happens when californians move to oregon

This was so awesome and so accurate this was worth it
"white people with dogs" really got me. Been living here a few months and that does describe most of what I've seen.
I'm a white guy with three black labs ✔
This is so accurate; well done sir. I’m born and raised in Portland. It’s very different than it was in the 90s. I can’t believe I’m suggesting those were the good old days 😂😂😂 but I definitely am.
I know crazy huh?
I was born and raised in Oregon and Portland in the 90s was amazing but started to go downhill because of Meth early 2000s. Then all the people moved in thinking it was so great and drove up all the prices and now it's a dump. Hope there is a solution!
My parents left Portland in the 70s to move to Medford because "the crime was too high in Portland". I moved back to Portland after high school (graduated 1995), and lived here until I moved to Corvallis for 5 years so my (now-ex) could go to college. Came back to Portland in '07, bought a house, lost it in the recession, moved to Seattle in 2010, moved to Pullman in 2016 so I could go to college, and came back to Portland when I graduated in 2019. Have lived here ever since and intend to die here.
Places change. I've seen Portland in the 70s (albeit I was a toddler, but I have my parents stories and photos and such), I've seen Portland in the 90s, I've seen Portland in the 00s, and the 2010s, and we'll see how it changes in the 2020s. I find it ironic that my parents left here in the 70s because of "the crime", but Medford has a way bigger drug and crime problem per capita than Portland. And yet every time I talk to them, they're so freaked out that I'm in Portland because of what they see on the news.
However, having lived in Portland OR, Medford OR, Corvallis OR, Seattle WA, and Pullman WA during my 40-something years on this planet, I think Portland gets a bad rap. I fucking hated Seattle.
This should be the introduction of Oregon state im serious. Lived in the valley now east ! What a trip .
I've lived in Oregon for my entire life. It used to be nice to live here. Now it sucks! High taxes and governors that have screwed up this state for decades
High taxes? New York says...hold my beer.
go to idaho alice and give up all your safeguards and rights
Taxes aren't high. Having no sales tax means income & property taxes will be higher. Portland metro does have the highest water rates in the nation. It seems like the ones who don't like Oregon are the ones who migrated generations back who prefer it to remain white.
@@TheTunaMaster You would have to enlighten me as to which safeguards and rights I would be giving up if I moved to Idaho. I've lost most of my safeguards in Oregon already. Most drugs, including hard drugs are legal to use. We have one of the highest income taxes in the country. Water and sewer Bill's are outrageous with myriad fees incorporated into them. Homeless camps and tweakers, druggies and homeless tent cities everywhere. How could it get any better?
Agree it’s become a disaster

Call me non-American but I have been to the Tillamook cheese factory many times being an Oregon native, but I don't like cheese. Its a really cool place to visit if you ever get the chance. The tourist part of the factory you can literally see every process of the workers making the cheese from beginning to end, but be prepared in the summer at least it is very busy and crowded with tourists. They just remolded the factory too back in 2018 and is now called the Tillamook Creamery and is much more modern looking now with like hybrid outside inside eating areas where you can like get food or ice cream and sit down and enjoy it.

Ahh, it’s been a year since I’ve gone to Portland, been an awesome year.
Bro so spot on! Hillsburritto*😂
Too much accurate info on here. Wish Portland could go back 20 years ago
super weird. The last 3-5 years the drug and homeless problem is insane! Probably 10x fold .
Thank you so damn much for this video. I laughed so hard! SOOO many variants of snob 🤣🤣🤣 I fit into 3 categories so I think I'm moving to Oregon ✊
I wouldn't say the homeless is due to welfare programs, it's way more nuanced then that. No one wakes up one day and says they wish they can be a drug addict. A lot of homeless younger folks are foster kids that age out of the system. Oregon has a horrible mental health crisis as well which leads to homelessness and drug use.
If anything it's due to not enough social welfare programs and affordable housing
@@drhexagonapus It’s due to too many ineffective and misguided social programs, not reopening the mental hospitals, ignored vagrancy and vandalism laws that draw people from all over the country (I’ve personally met some and talked about it) and now possession of Class A drugs isn’t illegal. And housing is astronomical. The Democrat leadership that’s been in power for decades stupidly thinks things like policies that prohibit police from enforcing loitering laws give the homeless back their dignity (which is to the detriment of taxpayers and business owners who have no recourse), and instead of starting meaningful drug treatment programs, getting mentally ill people into comprehensive treatment and/or hospitals instead of on the streets or in jail, funding housing developments and incentivizing developers, they use the funding elsewhere or probably pocket it.
Most of the homeless know how to work the system. They get a check because it is considered a disability. I know this because I am sober many years. When I sobered up it was suggested I file. Never did since I believed in working as a drunk or sober. Could not believe people did that. I busted my butt as a single Mom, helping my kids get through college as well as myself. I made it to the top of my career & have owned several properties. It’s a matter of choice. Just don’t put your hand out. WORK!
its an american problem yet people think sanctuary cities are shitty while literally trying to solve the problem. every other city may not like homeless but that’s because they don’t like people.
Most homeless aren't even drug addicts, most find their drugs while homeless if they do drugs because it heals the hurt
Been to Hood RIver... It’s beautiful ☺️ country!
Oar- ah- gone is a beautiful state!
Its pronounced " Oar - AGAIN" not " Oar - uh - gone." Obviously you don't live here, or you would know that. Not trying to be a d!ck, just trying to educate.
love your videos! funny and fun
Welcome to Oregon! I hope you enjoy your new home
I'm Asian, so Portland is a no go zone for me. See Andy Ngo.
@@UnknownColorado wait I’ve never heard about this. What’s the TLDR, plz 👀🥺
???
Race matters, sucker. Get tollerant!
Which reminds me, I preordered his book.
Aunt Tifa seems to be upset that Andy published a book
This is my home state whether I like it or not
I love this youtube channel! Greetings from The Netherlands
Love your videos!
I left Portland in 2012 and moved east, closer to Mt. Hood. PDX used to be a lovely, charming place, but times have really changed. The homeless and the druggies are the most visible, but there is also a lot more crime than there used to be as well, particularly in SE Portland east of 82nd. I have to deal with a little more weather than I used to, but I'm glad I got out when I did.
Yay!!
That area is called "Felony Flats".
I live in Oregon and he's dead on as the vid starts
Do y’all hate people from Texas
That was a good video. Laughed hard!
Love your videos! I knew I recognized Klamath Falls at 20:21, going south on Washburn by Walmart!
