Great review, I've never been big Mayhem fan so the way "Daemon" hit me was a surprise of the year & beyond for me . 30 years after their heyday coming up with such a release is remarkable and I'd evaluate the album even higher than u did. I think what put this album over the top for me are those nice little folkish vocals and melodies I haven't noticed previously on Mayhem releases
New mayhem Album is Best, after de mysteriis and wolfs lair abyss!! I liked New Album, and I have get that To my self. It is a mix of de mysteriis and wolfs lair abyss. And something New.
Nice review. I'm glad they took this path (that looks at the past, DMDS primarly, but still has some experimental parts too) for the recording of this album. And yeah, maybe not a total masterpiece of black metal, but surely one of my favorite from Mayhem since DMDS (even if the only I cannot really digest is Ordo ad Chao, the rest was ok).
Great review. You said pretty much exactly what I would've said about this album, but in an awesome Finnish accent! 👍🤘I agree about Mayhem live. Stoked for the interview dude!
Awesome album, great review. Generally, I appreciate you trying to focus this channel on the underground but I think your subscribers would be happy if you do more reviews of major releases like the recent Cattle Decapitation and Blood Incantation. I know you reviewed Nile.
Thanks for the comment. For me it doesn't matter if it's UG or mainstream. I think it's just important to speak about music. Regarding Cattle Decapitation and Blood Incantation: I haven't received promos for neither. I was supposed to get CD, but because of some chaos here that kinda got cancelled and the label guy just said, let's move on, so we have to forget it now. Blood Incantation is a Dark Descent release and I know their PR label usually sends me those albums a bit late, so it still might come. Not sure ofc.
Looking forward too the interview..still listening too this album after a couple of months online I would agree best since mysterious as I was not a big fan off maniac..illuminate of ordo is still my all-time favorite mayhem song
For a change, we're in full agreement ;-) Is Daemon going to compare to a 25-year old classic? Of course not. Do they need some new material for this lineup to play, if they're going to keep touring? Of course. So, knowing those two points, this a better album than might have been expected. It is far from unique in 2019, but can stand without shame with many other 2019 releases. For me, that's good enough.
I've listened to the new Mayhem a few times. It has moments, but nothing that hooks me enough to buy the album. Mayhem is basically a one album wonder going back to De Mysteriis although the Deathcrush EP is solid output as well. They've also cultivated a strong following based on their well known history and stage theatrics. Frankly when I go back to the old black metal for a listen Mayhem isn't on the top of my list. Still, it's good they've put out a solid - run of the mill - black metal album for old and new fans.
@@catsystemcorp Cheers. Hope you had a good time there. It has been many years since I was there, but gotta say I visited the place already in the late 90's with some bm back then: Emperor, Gorgoroth, Cradle of Filth etc. and mid 90's with bands like Meshuggah, Machine Head etc.
@@RautaMetal wow sounds amazing! There used to be a metal temple here in the netherlands, but its gone.. Next year i move to Finland so i hope tavastia and other festivals can supply my need for good metal gigs :)
@@catsystemcorp Welcome to Finland, then! Well, Tavastia is far from metal temple these days, but it used to have a lot of cool gigs in the 90's. I think Mayhem played in Tavastia because two bigger clubs are just shutting down soon.
I totally agree with @adamagedone, in my opinion the most incredible bands and albums are released by "small" bands through small labels, but unfortunately we live in a global society that define "quality" by things fucking popular and of course extreme metal it's not a exception, so it's sad see a lot of incredible underground bands releasing awesome albums but being drowned by shitty albums from bands like Mayhem, Darkthrone, Abbath, Satyricon and any other popular black metal shit. A perfect advertising + Time = Shitty bands that can release shitty albums and will be sold out anyway!
Well, at least you can't say I'm not giving credit to a lot of good and small bands! So, yeah, I know what you mean, but I don't think it's that black and white either. There are also a lot of small shitty bands there and some bigger ones still do good albums, too. Not Satyricon though 🤭
@@RautaMetal Yeah Rauta of course you give a lot of support to small bands and this is awesome , and yeah I agree with you also, of course that there is some big bands with incredible albums and small bands ith shitty albums also, a good exemple for me is "The Satanist from Behemoth I fucking love that album, but the new album of them I didn't swallowed, so of course it's relative!!!
Since Blasphemer left Mayhem hasn't been able to convince me. This album and Esoteric warfare sound very boring and uninspired to me. Weird, because I actually like Teloch as a guitarist (Nidingr are great). Maybe it's because these albums harken back to earlier works, whereas the other post-DMDS material is fresh. But I will give it some more spins because some of the riffs are very good.
No need to apologize: feel free to ask anything! No, I don't buy albums for review. Having done reviews for over 17 years I do get them sent almost on daily basis. Too much if you ask me. I have hard time reviewing them all. But no, this isn't a job that pays. This is a hobby that doesn't pay the bills :)
Can you mention some of those riffs... but hey .. do u mean that the copied dmds or what ... i can't notice any smilarities between the two album... maybe you're wrong
@@montassarjbeli1399 I am not the only one noticing these similarities between these two albums. Even Attila himself said they were influeced a lot by DMDS as they toured on that album for a couple of years.
I'll be blunt: I'm sincerely convinced that if this had been released by an underground band nobody would have noticed. Nothing really stands out here, just bread and butter black metal with mostly mediocre compositions and a severe lack of memorable riffs. Attila's vocals are always a nice distinctive trait, I can concede that, but still this is just too little meat on the bone. For me it's a no.
I get what you mean, but for me it’s not like that as I haven’t liked any Mayhem album since DMDS this much. So for me it’s not so much about the name as it’s about the songs. Even though this is kinda bread and butter bm, like you said, that’s exactly what applies to most bm albums coming here all the time, month after month.
Glad to see people like u difficult to please cause I'm tired of everybody cheerleading and declaring mediocrity a "masterpiece" but you're wrong on that one. 35 years in their career to pull up something like that is remarkable - everything's there - the energy, the writing, the vocals, the production and on top of it is spiced up brilliantly with those tastefully sprinkled folkish cleans. Of course if u don't like it - u don't.
@@Count_Deangeli Agreed. After 35 years in the business, only a handful of bands can make such a strong album as this. And yeah, I'm looking into bands like Iron Maiden and Metallica, too. I think Judas Priest is actually one of those older names that did a good new album a couple of years ago.
@Sinister King The band tried to get back to it's DMDS sound through the production but not the songwriting, there are obvious hints here and there but it's closer to the swedish Orthodox Black Metal sound than DMDS, that's my opinion.
Personally this is my favourite Mayhem album since DMDS

Very solid album by Mayhem. I’m sure it will continue to grow on me. I’d put it at #3 after DMDS & OAC.

Deathevokation Same here really. Mayhem wouldn't be as valued as it is if it wasn't for being an early bird in the scene.
I like it. There’s definitely a DMDS and also a Mgła influence. Their best since GDOW in my opinion. Chimera deserves a mention.
