Hehe glad you like it. Learning how to do it as a part of the process now. When at the office here we have gigabit internet so you have to do time stamps while editing or it’s uploaded before you blink. In Italy you edit then do timestamps while it’s uploading haha. All a Learning curve
Your description of the noob ‘mastery’ of the fast car, was me in fast Porsche! Then the instructor drove and showed me 10mph faster apex speed with zero understeer 👀
Saying that truth about fast car slow, vs slow car fast, is quite something in this realm of youtube, much respect for your honesty Robert. I see it all the time here on the touge (the mountain pass) in Japan, the fast guys aren't the ones with the R35, they are the guys with the swifts, the miatas, 86 ...even small kei cars, those who have to "drive" their way through. So thanks for saying this as the youtube sphere tends to bias people into thinking, more is always better. Thanks for your great videos.
For the younger folks, Robert’s advice is why the Mazda Miata in the 1980s was so popular; its suspension could handle all of the power (torque), which made it fun for all levels of driving skill.
Slow cars fast, agreed 100% - but that's until you reach the ring. For someone that has to drive 4-5 hours to get there, a slow car may become boring as the track use is less than the road use. Maybe that's why you love driving the GT86 (you spend most time with it having fun)
Hi I will not deny that we are very lucky to be there and do so many laps. I however think so many people get caught up in the moment and miss out on actually being able to learn. The minute they take an instructor or use a car that they can actually push they realize that they have missed so much time messing around
I’m glad you read the negative comments. Many youtubers develop a holier than everybody complex and get offended by negativity. If I see you doing something wrong and can help you I will point it out. You will most often read the comments and have at times corrected me or found ways to advance the conversation. Don’t change.
we have to read them to see whats actually going on. only looking at positive makes you one dimensional. I probably have the most negative thoughts about this Channel myself lol
Got to say Robert, been subbed for about 2 years or so it feels, since Shmee started spending time at the ring, the quality of your content has come up massively and it’s great to see you posting so regularly now. You’ve become one of the channels I watch most. Generally informative stuff, like that helmet/harness/belt video - I’d never thought of that before despite spending lots of time in cars with harnesses like my uncles 3-eleven. Thing I love most is that you’re not in it purely for the money and it’s just for pleasure, keep it up. And slow car fast every time too!
I bought a 1994 MX-5 for my first car and tracked it frequently. A lot of people drove my car on track and often said it was the most fun they've had in a car even though they had a more expensive faster car.
I have been at Adenau a couple weeks back with my bike and saw the Apex M2 drive by, made me smile. Even though I have never been on the track, I love coming to the Nürburgring and watch everyone drive no matter what car they are in.
MX-5 is much fun, but just running the car for 130 Laps this year cost me 5k€ no damage just laps and maintenance. So cheap is relative - 5k is a lot for me.
@@MrZyLeXx just running the car for 130 laps was 5k the car set me back another 4k ... But I still have the car and could probably sell it for the same money
I am hard pressed to think of a better way to decompress after work than to catch your videos. I love the honesty, and conversational tone you use to express, with genuine excitement, your opinions on all things automotive. It is so refreshing to see someone so successful connect with us in such a positive way. Thanks for all you share!
Again, keep being you Robert! Incredibly refreshing to "talk" to you through those videos. Whether it is Car talk or business, I want more and I'm definitely not the only one!
Well said Robert! When I used to instruct, we instructors knew that even the cars back then used were too fast sadly for most of the clients we had! So what you said about a slow car was just perfect!
Definitely agree 100% a slow light car. doesnt matter if its fwd, rwd, 4wd will improve driver skill way more than driving a big bhp car that only covers up flaws
I doubt I'll ever be able to (or want to) own a 'Supercar'. Very happy with my 86 as a quasi (covid) daily driver. I liked the note about lap times and little cars destroying the performance cars. Great point and fun to watch.
Personally I don't drink. I skipped through one cocktail recipe but then rewatched in case I missed some BS talk 🤣 I enjoy that part of your videos as much as the actual topics.
I'm 19, first track car is a Mazda RX-8. FR layout, 50-50 weight multilink, and double-wishbone suspension make it great handling out the box. It might seem slow on straights compared to most modern hot hatches. It is the perfect tool to teach myself lines, throttle control, and RWD handling at the limit. I still can't maximize the potential of this car. Only once I know I can maximize braking and cornering will I move onto more power. Not to mention I love hitting 9500rpm :)
I don't ever comment on videos, but the real-talk recently resonates with me so much. Love every element of the videos, drinks and cars. Keep the good content going!
@@RobertMitchell Hampshire in the UK. Started watching your and Misha's videos during lockdown after experiencing some wanderlust for getting back out doing some roadtrips with friends, and now they are my end of day wind down.
I honestly enjoy your videos more than any other. I have never seen someone be so down to earth and honest about everything. When I get the opportunity, I am coming to Apex for sure.
Just want to say, I have the exact sentiment. I did 2 years of track days in a Mazda 3 - stock with no mods - and while no one bats an eye, it's super rewarding to get the times I target for, even though it's still slow 😂 Thank you for making the video, and people don't think about driving slow car fast enough!
There is definitely a rhythm in driving a car smoothly. Just because a driver feels he’s making time because he’s all over the pedals doesn’t necessarily mean he’s making time. It can get REALLY busy if the car is getting ahead of you.
As someone who's learning to trail brake in an 86, I can't imagine attempting it at a substantially faster corner entry with a car that's probably less balanced. One of the things I love most about the 86 is how communicative and forgiving it is on the limit
I wasn't a fan of videos where someone is just talking in front of a camera, regardless of topic, before I started following you. This channel is deeply insightful while still being down to earth. Don't change a thing! Hope to see you in person at Apex next year :)
thank you Mirko, thee will be a large group that need action and I won't pretend to be able to deliver that!! ill tell some funny stories about wanting to try but just saying screw this 3 min in
I’ve started out with a low powered E30 for the track, fantastic to learn and drive in but I’ve found that it is probably a little too old, as parts are not as easy to come by these days. Something like a GT86 really would have made more sense.
@@RobertMitchell Definitely reliable and I love the raw driving experience in brings, in comparison to a more modern car. It will also be built to 450-550whp as my skill progresses - I am still the limiting factor of the car, even though it’s slow 😉
Damned good advice about slow car fast. Can I add two small points? a) Get that car with an actual manual stick. Not because "it's cool" to row gears but for the extra mechanical connection you FEEL to the car. Esp. in hard/perf driving. b) How about not starting in a car. Wanna git gud? Try a year or two of competition in Karting. Love the channel, keep doing you man. Peace.
After watching this, and enjoying it, I feel the need for a video about weight (no not your or your bike's weight, Robert :) ). What I mean is that: First, today's cars are heavy and heavy cars cost a lot more to run and second heavy cars are less agile and they don't respond as well to driver input, making you less sharp as a driver. On the Ring, with its long straights, a heavy high powered car can make up for its lack of agility, but far from all tracks have such long straights and high speed corners. A fully loaded M5 is still fast, but... you know what I mean. I think being able to drive a light car with a short wheelbase fast is essential to maximize your driving skills. So, Santa Robert, Christmas' coming up... and on the top of my wish list is a video or two about different cars agility. Maybe it's a good idea to divide it into two vids, one for FWD and one for RWD. FWD: Everything from a Renault Clio Mk3, Civic Type R to a Raeder Motorsport prepped Ford Focus RS Mk2. Please skip all the VWs, just to annoy se Germans. Drink German beer to ease their pain. RWD: GT86, Miata, Lotus Exige and old Ford Escorts and Capris, rwd 'shit boxes' that are appreciating in value... Invite Misha! I guess he has an opinion on all of the cars mentioned above.
Talking so much sense as always! Driving slow cars fast is just ridiculous fun! Every, single, time. Driving them at their absolute limit, tyres squealing, barely breaking the speed limit while laughing all the time, you just gotta love it. Some things money can't buy. Like skill. It has to be learnt. We don't start running before we learn to walk, it had to be built up. Hindsight may be 2020, but I can't wait until 2020 is in hindsight! Bring back normality, road trips, track days, and an overdue Apex.visit. 👌🏻
This really assures me that I made the right choice in keeping my 128i and just focusing on making it handle better instead of trying to move on to something faster even If It is comfortably in my price range. Keep up quality content
I actually never drink but i still find the alcohol talk intressting cause it's something different even though it's not what i would do my self. I just find it enjoyable to listen to the way you talk about these things.
Well said Robert. Mazda RX8 perfect first car for tight tracks. Yes 86 more reliable, but the rotory just has that race feel to it. In fact here in Australia at Sandown, the pro drivers on track days would love to drive my rx8 and give the Porsche owners a run for there money. I'm a good driver but not a pro, yes have had the porsches etc, but had more fun in the Mazda because I can drive it on the limit without being to dangerous.
Go for an NA, don't go for a 1.8 liter the extra power is not worth the extra price. Look for "Kraid MX-5" and "SPS Motorsport" on youtube there you will find everything you need. Safe travels
@@HansBrodiAutomotive Yeah the 1.6 has better gearing aswell, insurance is so good on miatas aswell so I might have to save up some more and get one :)
@@HansBrodiAutomotive the 1.8 already comes with an LSD and bigger brakes. Price-wise it's better to go for the 1.8 over the 1.6. Added power/tq is definitely a great bonus.
Nice job with the time stamps. Totally agree that pushing a slow car is better. Not only is better in understanding the tire limits, but they also give more time to think because of the lower speeds on the track. I believe instructors prefer a slower car, so they can have more time to speak about breaking points and mistakes, etc etc
I am driving a ≈200hp Peugeot 208 GTI. On trackdays I am running Nankang AR-1 tyres. At a trackday earlier this year I was (slowly) catching up with Audi RS5 on cheaper Kumho Summer tyres. Everytime we got on the straights, he would pull away as if I was parked. But once we hit the corners, the tabels turned completely. Pirelli's slogan: "Power is nothing without control" is most definitely still true.
There's a reason many used to recommend the Porsche 924 as a first sports car. Low power, good balance and chassi with reasonable cheap spare parts. I could still see myself get one but having had +400 hp cars and driving for close to 30 years I'd probably like a bit more power then original, say around 200 (and needed to compensate for my weight...). And I just love Pirelli's old slogan: Power is nothing without control.
Well said Robert, Paul Newman took a lot of grief from family and friends while racing/learning Datson spec 510s in his early career. I don’t think anyone can argue with his success. Slow car fast, can’t be understated. PS.....I hope you’ve had an opportunity to try Casa Dragone Tequila, Fabulous! and for fun, Sombre smoked Mezcal
Keep this up Robert. Theres notmany channels like this in the car world. Very happy to be watching these vids. You shouls be proud of ur self and the team.
Most important thing is YOU need to have fun. If you are not having fun then the stuff you put out wouldn’t be fun either and audience can tell. I don’t have access to a track, i don’t have a minibar in my small flat, but I enjoy watching you discuss these things anyway :)
Honored to have you on the channel considering your interests. Drop a note on some of your hobbies or interests and maybe we find one that matches up for a topic!!
@@RobertMitchell I like older cars, but not TOO old, 80s and 90s are best, probably because I’m an 80s child. I have an E34 M5 and a 996 C2. I find them to have just the right amount of power for street use (around 300hp). Your point about driving slow car fast definitely applies to street use too!
Nicely said Robert 👍 Slow car Fast then Fast car Slow anytime of the week. Make you better driver, then when you progress from slow car into fast car makes you in a “Fast Car Faster” once you establish solid fundamentals in slower car.
No driver goes directly from Go karts to F1 but all of them start in Go karts. Go karts teach the fundamental basics of driving at a young age. So by the time they are 16 and are about to enter car racing they understand how to correct oversteer, understeer, how to drive in the wet etc.
Spot on Robert. There is another level to this topic. Instructions. I started my career as a ski instructor. When you’re a beginner, get instructions. You will teach the right technique from the beginning. This means you will be better, learning faster and having a more solid ground to build your further skills on. I can teach anyone to ski in 5-10hrs but it can take >100hrs to correct a faulty self learned technique. Cheers!
Yeah man, keep it down a bit and talk more about your apple watch thing, because that's the real important stuff here. How fast is the thing on the track? What upgrades have you planned for it? Does it understeer in the corners? Anyways, love your work Robert 💚
Carry on Robert, haters gonna hate. I happen to dig the conversation- including the drink comments. Nobody making anybody watch Robert’s channel- if you don’t like his stuff move on. I like that you talk to this fast car laymen in terms I understand and make it fun to learn about performance driving. 👍
Robert, You Rock Mate! If there are people hating what and how you do things - please disregard! Every time I open my UA-cam and see a video from your channel Im watching it to the end!
Being that you are at Ramstein, the wall hanging behind you reminds me of the buildings I grew up in on top of the hill in Landstuhl back in the early 80’s
As a gt86 owner and fan i love to hear you talk about the car, unfortunately you dont put many videos driving it or presenting the car like you used to do (the one with tiffany is wonderfull) showing what a slow car fast is capable of. I would love to hear you talk more about the car as a project, what has been done to it, what you plan to do, what setup do you run on it and why. Once you said that you would like to do a project gt86 as your own, would totally love to see that and the backstage on it. Keep up the good work, you're a great asset for the car community.
Thanks for the kind words! We actually have a video coming out pretty soon where we talk in depth about the car on Misha’s channel. I will also do some more stuff with it for you guys as it really is a cool car
It's absolutely true though, I started in a stock sentra spec v, then boosted it, did 2 years of driving then went v8 with an s550 mustang did another 2 years of driving and now boosted it and at 860hp. The 4 cylinder days were priceless,... and alot cheaper lol
I just had a modest old Peugeot GTI (1.9L) and learned to drive that. Simply because I don't have a lot of money and can't afford to ride fast/expensive cars. It was such a fun car, simple, no electronic aids, manual, simple engineered, but you could feel everything that was happening. All your inputs translated perfectly to you, the driver. Such a pure little fun machine. I'm sticking to my philosophy, less is more (fun)!
Ignore them Robert. Your channel is aimed at more mature viewers, the young impatient ones don’t get some of the nice touches you add in. And you have to bear in mind, not everyone is that smart, some just make stupid comments that feel smart to them.
I think you are absolutely right. In motorcycle world, I used to ride Z300 (300cc low budget bike with "poor" specs), however I had more fun on twisties and it looked to me that I have more skill on that bike than I'm having on my 675 Street Triple - which is 2.5 times more powerful, yet weights the same... You twist the throttle and suddenly you are doing 150-170 km/h on normal road.. In some ways, that acceleration is nice and fun, but it's also getting unsafe and not enjoyable. I used to own lot of 125ccs, 300ccs bikes as well as two NB Miatas (1.6 and 1.8), driven in BRZ several times and I can only agree it's the biggest fun. And also the best way learning how to ride/drive. Love those machines, they'll have place in my heart forever. And even though I'd love to try something more powerful some day, I would absolutely love to sit in my Miata and *drive the shit* out of her. Great content, keep it up. P.S.: When you mentoined GT86, what are you thoughts about new, upcoming BRZ/GR86? Do you see yourself buying it in the future? Although GR Yaris is absolute dream, I'd like to hear your opinion about new GR86 and im a bit curious, what do you think about Toyota/Lexus as a company.
i am very eager to look more into the new 86 and share thoughts there. its funny how you notice this issue on powerful bikes too. when you think about it the weight increase is probably even more as a percentage. a large bike becomes cumbersome fast
@@RobertMitchell Awesome, looking forward to it. It's definitely same on the bikes, weight increase is even bigger problem for me than high power figures. That's why i like small, nimble bikes like Street Triple, Duke, Brutale (170-180kgs) and so on... And i dont really like bikes like Z750 which weights about 220kgs. Same about cars. Cars can have some decent power, good brakes, chasis and suspension... But when it weights tooo much, somehow, it becomes less fun than some low powered, well balanced 1000-1300kg car, as you can really throw them around with ease. Thanks for reply and have a nice evening.
I like the cocktail and drink part its not one of my interests but it is one of my partners and I enjoy occasionally dipping into different drinks and cocktails. I think its a great bit of balance and enjoy sticking your video's on and listening to you share your interests and experience, I often do it whilst I'm working or just needing to relax. I will always have time to listen to someone talk about something they have genuine interest and passion for, spent many a night working away from home with interesting people, staying up too late with a drink finding out about their life and interests, those memories and stories always stay with me. Really like your content so thankyou. My track car i'm building is a clio 200, common track car but it is a great car to drive and strikes a good balance, i've had faster cars but as you say speed is not everything i live in scotland with lots of small tight roads and driving a car down these roads in safe limits at safe speeds is really thrilling as a result. I also have a mk4 gold TDI daily, that's Misha's fault!
There's plenty of chit chat.. sometimes I like it and sometimes I skip. Just move on peeps! Great channel and content, Robert. I mostly watch your stuff for inspiration to start my own businesses.
I enjoy the atmosphere that you create. I personally don’t drink but I have in the past enjoyed my favorite alcoholic beverage in the company of good people and good conversation. Stay the course!
Makes alot of sense ! Driving the 200hp car would allow you to learn those key skills faster and safer. Learn how to read a car at its limit and you can transfer that process and knowledge to any car. Another great video Robert 👍 looking forward to the video about rear mounted engines ( Porsche's ) behaviour on track compared to front or Mid mounted !
You absolutely correct 👏 breakin period is the most important part of driving . Cheap car is better to learn than to an expensive car because of part and mistakes that will be made and it will be very costly
I love the time stamp idea that you started. I sometimes want to fast-forward through the liquor sequence, not because I don't like it but because liquor and dealing with drunk people is my job. I don't want to have to think about work when I'm not working. I'd rather think about cars and your channel provides this perfect escape. You're calm too. You don't bitch about why sushi isn't made with brown rice. Today was educational as always. "Fast car slow. Slow car fast." Very interesting concept. I honestly can't contribute to this conversation because I ride the subway so I'm out of the loop. Still, when I think about supercars my eyes glaze over. I don't know why. Perhaps it's my inexperience talking but they kind of bore me. I remember when supercars used to be special and now they are a dime-a-dozen. It takes a lot for me to like a car. It's not about horsepower, torque, expense, or rarity. A supercar has to have the X-factor and most do not. That's why I keep hammering the idea that a Porsche by Singer is the greatest car ever made. I also keep bringing up the Gordon Murray T-50. You already said you wouldn't want to own a T-50 but it would make the most epic video if you took the T.50 on a jaunt around the Nurburgring... with Analiese of course. Cars that excite me have great power to weight ratios. I guess that brings us to restomods like Retropower's Cosworth powered MK1 Escort, again, for Gordon Murray. I also love Alfaholic's GTA-R. Stunningly beautiful, though restomods aren't the safest cars on the road. Another fantasy of mine would be to drive a pristine 1965 Mustang Convertible, with the top down on a warm, sunny day, around the Nurburgring. "Oh look, there's Robert Mitchell! He just passed me in his GT2 RS." I would be grinning from ear to ear. I have been thinking about new, small cars too, especially after you talked about the GR Yaris. It kind of sucks that the Yaris isn't available stateside but it would be really cool to import a GR Yaris from the grey market into the U.S., even if it does void the warranty. I don't like Golf GTI's because they are too big and even the Polo GTI has 5 doors nowadays and it too is not available in the U.S. So I did some research and apparently many GTI aficionados consider the GTI MKV 2004 - 2008 the best GTI of the bunch. That would suit me just fine living here in NYC. I could get a three door and it's the proper size for a GTI. It's fairly inexpensive, even with a sunroof (which I would insist on). While we don't have the Nurburgring in New York there are places I could go to learn to drive a "slow car fast." That would be great fun! You see, Robert? You have influence.
I would love to try the t50 out. it embodies a lot of the things I would like BUT its too fragile, too strung out. motor would be on the back of your mind all the time etc. and heaven forbid you back that sweet fan into a guard-rail lol now, I also have something in the back of my mind w the occasional drinks. there cold be people w dependencies that may not be encouraged by my drinks shown.. I dont like that idea.
@@RobertMitchell Robert, all of us here are your advocates. You must do everything in your power to get into a T.50, even if it's just for an hour. We can't do it. We need you. "Help us, Obi-Wan Robert. You're our only hope." I've been thinking about your comment regarding cocktails. I like what you said in this video here. We are all having a conversation. More people than not like your cocktail conversations. Still, I am completely torn on the matter. I see all sides as I'm sure you do too. It's difficult to decide what to include and exclude from your videos. There are many videos on UA-cam about cocktails. They are on television too. Your intelligence and taste for well crafted cocktails is apparent and your bar is simply incredible. I could see why you would want to share with us this part of you. We appreciate it. If I had to decide, however, to include the cocktail talk or not, I would not. I don't think you drinking on UA-cam makes any difference concerning dependencies. The reason why I would not include cocktails is simply because people come to this channel to learn about your passion, cars. This channel is called, "Robert Mitchell," so it doesn't have to be exclusively about cars but this is why we come here. This is why I watch Chris Harris and Jay Leno too. Adding a bit on cocktails just messes with the recipe. I could also see people identifying you as, "the car guy that drinks." No matter how responsible you are, people are awful and will attack you for anything. On the flip side, why not share all of your other passions on this channel, like cocktails and bicycles? It's a tough decision. This is just me. "Opinions are like assholes, we all have one." You do you. We all support you, regardless what you decide. By the way, as I was writing this just now, a gray tree squirrel just climbed through my window and jumped on my keyboard. I kid you not. I guess she wanted to send you a message too. This is honest to goodness what she wrote. I hope you understand squirrel.... -8u b'
Thank you for the very good advice. I am by no means an experienced driver but what you said makes so much sense and is totally confirmed by what I could see during a few track days. Braking is super important and perhaps the most difficult thing to learn for a beginner (in my experience).
There is very nice energy around your channel. Its so obvious that you are keeping this channel from pure enjoyment. Lately, I see a lot of pressure around youtubers trying to gain as much as possible views, susbscribers, advertisers etc.
Robert, I am really enjoying your video's I know there is a lot of effort going into putting them out constantly so thank you for the entertainment during Covid, both yours and Misha's channels have been an escape. Professionally this year has been very busy because of COVID, giving people the IT tools who in turn help those in need has been stressful at times so the release these videos have given me has been really appreciated. The road you drove along in the Italy GT2 RS MR video with Tom Stamp looked really familiar, it occurred to me a few days later I had driven it about 11 years ago and that it is a stunning area to visit, we had some good fun in the tunnels on the autostrada to Milan after visiting that area in our shitbox Volvo, good memories.
ah the road to Milan is a sure winner !!!! drove the gt2 through there around midnight on the way down and loved it. I am glad yo guys are sharing the enjoyment in the channel makes me really happy to be a part of!!
20/20 For the video! Car park update for the 50k subscribers video? Or maybe just a simple compilation of the best moments that you had because of the channel? Still haven't forgotten about the E36, really looking forward to the update.
Totally agree with you. My first"track car," that is also my daily, is one of the new HPP Mustangs with 332hp. For my first sessions I struggled to get to terms with the car and it made progressing more difficult. I also had only ever driven my 1998 Camry before that, so not like I did myself any favors!
@@RobertMitchell Lots of track time! I live in the PNW, so I am fortunate to have a few really great tracks with instructors within driving distance. Congrats on killing it!!😁
Thank you for distracting me 😂
I always enjoy your videos and having an insight into your work at Apex.
thx Noel! glad you were able to take a little break and check in
Got to say Robert, been subbed for about 2 years or so it feels, since Shmee started spending time at the ring, the quality of your content has come up massively and it’s great to see you posting so regularly now.
Oi Robert! I’d like to see some German beers as well 🍺👍🏻
ill see what I can do :)
I'll second that 😜🍻
Imma third that

@@RobertMitchell You might want to try the dark Krombacher 🤫
I bought a 1994 MX-5 for my first car and tracked it frequently. A lot of people drove my car on track and often said it was the most fun they've had in a car even though they had a more expensive faster car.
so many shy away from small cars til they see what they really drive like
the best car to learn how to drive fast, is a Gokart !
the smaller and lighter the beter, because it magnifies ya mistakes
I have been at Adenau a couple weeks back with my bike and saw the Apex M2 drive by, made me smile. Even though I have never been on the track, I love coming to the Nürburgring and watch everyone drive no matter what car they are in.
MX-5 is much fun, but just running the car for 130 Laps this year cost me 5k€ no damage just laps and maintenance. So cheap is relative - 5k is a lot for me.
that is amazing!!!
5k is alot of money but being able to do 130 laps paying for the lap and the car is not alot IMO.
@@RobertMitchell would like to see an Apex MX-5 someday 👍
@@gerardjoaquino8856 same. I'm sure George can mend something ;]
Thanks for all you share!
thank you as well Rick for chiming in! without you guys id be talking to an electrical device with some glass on it hahaha
Again, keep being you Robert!
Incredibly refreshing to "talk" to you through those videos.
Whether it is Car talk or business, I want more and I'm definitely not the only one!
Thx sim I’ll do my best to keep it up!
Every time!
In 1981 I entered my first autocross with my Fiat X 1/9 and won first place, beating cars with three times the horsepower!
nice work Paul!!!
Robert not sure if you’ve discussed this but I’m sure many would love to know your background in driving and how you got into the business.
did you catch the video the other day about tearing apart my corvette? lots of early insights there!
I doubt I'll ever be able to (or want to) own a 'Supercar'. Very happy with my 86 as a quasi (covid) daily driver. I liked the note about lap times and little cars destroying the performance cars. Great point and fun to watch.
Personally I don't drink. I skipped through one cocktail recipe but then rewatched in case I missed some BS talk 🤣 I enjoy that part of your videos as much as the actual topics.
good man not drinking def better and cheaper option :)
@@RobertMitchell just means we spend more money on car parts 🤣
I'm 19, first track car is a Mazda RX-8. FR layout, 50-50 weight multilink, and double-wishbone suspension make it great handling out the box. It might seem slow on straights compared to most modern hot hatches. It is the perfect tool to teach myself lines, throttle control, and RWD handling at the limit. I still can't maximize the potential of this car. Only once I know I can maximize braking and cornering will I move onto more power. Not to mention I love hitting 9500rpm :)
ive not driven one on track but heard great things
@@RobertMitchell If I ever make it to Apex, I'll give you a go!
I don't ever comment on videos, but the real-talk recently resonates with me so much. Love every element of the videos, drinks and cars. Keep the good content going!
Luke, glad youre in the comments man. where are you from?
@@RobertMitchell Hampshire in the UK. Started watching your and Misha's videos during lockdown after experiencing some wanderlust for getting back out doing some roadtrips with friends, and now they are my end of day wind down.

I honestly enjoy your videos more than any other. I have never seen someone be so down to earth and honest about everything. When I get the opportunity, I am coming to Apex for sure.
thank you Viktor!! would love to see you at apex even just to chat and catch up!!
Just want to say, I have the exact sentiment. I did 2 years of track days in a Mazda 3 - stock with no mods - and while no one bats an eye, it's super rewarding to get the times I target for, even though it's still slow 😂
Thank you for making the video, and people don't think about driving slow car fast enough!
may not be the centre of attention but your having fun!
Cleetus McFarland should join you on the ring (since you mentioned corvette tuner guys) lol
There is definitely a rhythm in driving a car smoothly. Just because a driver feels he’s making time because he’s all over the pedals doesn’t necessarily mean he’s making time. It can get REALLY busy if the car is getting ahead of you.
You are spot on easy to learn slow and build rather than chasing a car around
I really appreciate your channel and your wizdom. Keep it up! Greetings from Latvia!
hello to Latvia!!!
As someone who's learning to trail brake in an 86, I can't imagine attempting it at a substantially faster corner entry with a car that's probably less balanced. One of the things I love most about the 86 is how communicative and forgiving it is on the limit
this too is what I like about it. w suspension etc its even more amazing. keep me up to speed on the progress
Hi! Stimulating conversation, enjoyed and appreciated for sure :)
Awesome, thank you!
I totally agree. That is a golden law. It is a typical case of the motorbike world
Yep! There were some great comments in this section talking about guys who have motorbikes with less power than their friends being faster etc. etc.
Speaking of an E36, how is the E36 build coming along?
next summer maybe
@@RobertMitchell That would be my choice for the ring taxi ride. Your commitment to top level performance and design is enjoyable to watch.
I think that is a cool solution w the e30 nothing wrong there if its reliable!
@@RobertMitchell Definitely reliable and I love the raw driving experience in brings, in comparison to a more modern car.
It will also be built to 450-550whp as my skill progresses - I am still the limiting factor of the car, even though it’s slow 😉
I have BMW 760 G12, Aventador and Mini JCW and my smile is on my face every time I push to the limit my JCW
Great show Robert! I enjoy the way you communicate and are so open with us. Also the Channel name needs to be changed to Tier 1 Robert
hehe I would change the name to tier 1 media or something but I like it w my name.. would be a good troll
Peace.
I think manual is a great way to start and def a kart over quad... thank you for the great thought there Joel
I like this idea!!!! I like it so much I’d shoot it right now but sitting on a dang plane and While I am def tier 1 ’m not that tier 1.
@@RobertMitchell Glad you like it!!!! Looking forward to it! Don't forget Misha... Cheers!
yes make 2020 hindsight!!! youre right on crawling, walking running...
Hey, your drinking actually helps towards the video (: I like it.

Nice job with the time stamps. Totally agree that pushing a slow car is better. Not only is better in understanding the tire limits, but they also give more time to think because of the lower speeds on the track. I believe instructors prefer a slower car, so they can have more time to speak about breaking points and mistakes, etc etc
glad youre liking the time stamps hehe.

And I just love Pirelli's old slogan: Power is nothing without control.
you are spot on with your idea on the Porsche... even more so that sometimes the power of the car isn't the problem it our weight hahaha

thank you MI. yes it leaves you a nice path to evolve on
How many F1 driver's went from go karts directly to F1? Exactly
follows my exact concept of learning to drive in something that you can feel, work with and get you head around the driving characteristics
Cheers!

Once you said that you would like to do a project gt86 as your own, would totally love to see that and the backstage on it.

nice progression smart man Mario hahah
I agree dan, we want responsible open minded group here
I think you are absolutely right.
I think that knowing someone, getting familiar with their interest is far more fun than being told how to think by them!

I would love to try the t50 out. it embodies a lot of the things I would like BUT its too fragile, too strung out. motor would be on the back of your mind all the time etc. and heaven forbid you back that sweet fan into a guard-rail lol
now, I also have something in the back of my mind w the occasional drinks. there cold be people w dependencies that may not be encouraged by my drinks shown.. I dont like that idea.
@@RobertMitchell Robert, all of us here are your advocates. You must do everything in your power to get into a T.50, even if it's just for an hour. We can't do it. We need you. "Help us, Obi-Wan Robert. You're our only hope."
I've been thinking about your comment regarding cocktails.
I agree and I look forward to you keeping me up to date as you progress on track!!
AWD/4WD vs. FWD vs. RWD @ Nurburgring? SO much to choose from.
Still haven't forgotten about the E36, really looking forward to the update.
great idea on the best moments concept! I like that oh the e36
Totally agree with you. My first"track car," that is also my daily, is one of the new HPP Mustangs with 332hp. For my first sessions I struggled to get to terms with the car and it made progressing more difficult. I also had only ever driven my 1998 Camry before that, so not like I did myself any favors!
how did you end up coming to terms w it over time?
@@RobertMitchell Lots of track time! I live in the PNW, so I am fortunate to have a few really great tracks with instructors within driving distance. Main hurdle was understanding appropriate introduction of steering angle. When you go from 8 years of FWD and 120hp to RWD and 330hp, everything about the vehicle's dynamics change. I almost had to re-learn how to feel the car!
