- I buy a 100% cashmere Burberry scarf from an Etsy seller for just $33. An unofficial investigation to see if I got scammed or if it's actually what is says it is - a genuine vintage Burberry scarf!

It's genuine from the 1980s I had several in the 80s and you have a rare colour for the time it was made., tan was the most common then gray then navy then green.
I watched this because it looks just like the one I bought in their store at New Bond Street in 1985! I still have it and it looks new as I haven't used it all that much. I don't remember how much I paid but it wasn't cheap at the time. Burberry/s was an upscale brand and has held a Royal Warrant since the mid 1950's. Lovely to see you enjoying your scarf!
Wow, that'd be a 35 year vintage by now! Thanks for watching, Kristall!
I seem to remember my 1st Cashmere 100% in about 1986 was about £140, previously I had a 50 /50 or two and Aquascutum
Your scarf looks authentic to me, and it’s so nice. I started collecting these last year... but usually I end up paying $120-$250 for a good second hand one in NZ. I don’t have a grey one yet though! :( You did well... so cute!
The only thing that looks a little suspect is the way the tag is sewn on. The stitching is not pristine and looks like it may have sewn on by someone other than the company. If you look at other tags, on the real thing, you don't see any uneven stitching on the tag. This does not mean it is fake. Since it might be 30 years old, the tag could have been coming loose and maybe someone sewed it back on. At any rate, you have a beautiful scarf that looks authentic and who will really know if it is not.
Good point! The tag and stitching on the tag itself in beige is perfect but the darker stitching attaching it to the scarf isn't. I think it's either what you said, that the tag came off during some time in its long 30 years and someone sew it back on, or it was made by one of the many non-main manufacturers during the period of time Burberry licensed out their name less strictly and didn't quality control as much.
I bought Burberry sweater for 15 dollars and I think it’s from the 80s but I’m not sure if it authentic because of the tag only being attached by two points and not fully sewn.
I think how the tag is attached varies since Burberry had a period where many different manufacturers were making their products so could go either way!
The label is stitched on and not tagged on at each corner, as it should be. The labels only became stitched on in the early 2000's. It is difficult to tell from a video. I would know by the handle. Albeit, saying that, I sold a lot of Burberry and as I spelt it was occurring in 1995. I was grey market trading from Burberry into Japan with original invoice. Even if a Burberry scarf doesn't come with the original invoice. It is considered as a fake when wholesaling in the grey market. Obviously your scarf is at least 25 years old. I would say it was real. Your scarf you have was made by a company called Josha Ellis. The label should be tacked on at the edges but they come loose and could easily have been stitched back on. Scarves are not an every day product, The dimensions are right and it could well have bee sitting in on a wardrobe shelf. Take some fibre and burn it. If it smells of hair, then you are good to go. As cashmere is a hair not a wool.
I had couple of hours between appointments so I went to thrift store to kill time I found a large Burberry tranche coat I almost died of shock for 45$ Canadian it’s real and over sized just beautiful ❤️my favourite brand
DEFINITELY authentic u Did Great 👍 Girly . Good for u Enjoy That Gorgeous piece❤️🇺🇸
Ah ahaha I've bought a Vintage Ungaro Bandana also from the same store from Etsy - it was fake vintage and I reviewed from what I bought and the shop owner responded was unfriendly " send it back to me ". It was of 35 Euro.
Same here. I got a bad scarf and he was terrible to deal with. Do you also notice that ALL his scarf have the exact same label, odd indeed, the labels changed often. His all are the same label. Makes me believe the label is fake and is attached on other scarfs. He called them mufflers. I had a very large hole in mine, plus it was at the tag area, where it appeared someone messed up when attaching fake label. I don't believe his scarfs are real.
$20 in India for these scarves. Original that too in 2023.
Not every seller is the same, depends upon your luck if you get an original or counterfeit
Hi there I wanted to thank you dearly for having shed light on this topic. It was a bit confusing until you came along with a comprehensive explanation which I have to admit makes sense. I have just bought myself a couple “Burberrys” scarves hence the vintages ones according to your findings. The only issue I got now is that I want to buy them all cause it’s not a matter of being fake or genuine but just different era collections 😂😂😂😂
By the way have you checked Vinted second hand platform yet??
Thank you very much 🙏🙏🙏
Excuse me, but please don'r be misled. Just because they didn't copy vintage pieces back then, ( which they DID by the way) doesn't mean they can't and don't copy those same vintage pieces NOW! You don't think the counterfeiers NOW can copy an older label?? They most certainly CAN and they DO!
Your comment about Burberry not being a luxury brand and high fashion in 1990s is bollocks sorry to say lol . And 50 bucks my hairy arse! I paid about £140 for a blue nova cashmere back then. A 50/50 was about £80- I didnt wear lambswool ones as that was a poor mans Burberry scarf lol. I was a Dresser - a Football Casual and in mid 80s we all wore a lot of Burberry, and yes it was very high fashion and very expensive , particularly the cashmere ones. And the most sought after was the blue Nova check. The grey ones were not so popular, the first time i saw one was in the Burberry shop in Manchester about 1987 i think. Didnt like it personally. This one is defo real. We can now close this case!
You’re beautiful with a.. Um Australian accent? Sorry I found your video to learn how to spot fakes. Good closeup video ^_^
Yep, Australian! Hope it was helpful and thanks for watching :D
@@SallyinWanderland in that case..you remind me of Rose from Blackpink the kpop girl group lol. Yes it did help so much thank you 🙏 😄
Great buy, I'll have to keep an eye on the store. I've not come across any fakes of the older style Burberrys products though that's definitely not to say that they don't exist somewhere. I did the research when I bought a vintage Buberrys trench coat. No real desire for faking at the time and if they had old fakes are quite easy to spot, the faking market has truly come a long way in the last 20+ years. Vintage Burberrys must be a relatively well kept secret as you can get their iconic trench coats for about 10% of what they sell for new today.
I agree, even 10 years ago fakes were kinda bad but that's not the case now. Amazing, I'll have to look into vintage Burberry trench coats!
You don't think the counterfeiters of today can copy what appears to be a vintage label?? They most certainly CAN and they DO!
@@authenticatorsrus2745 They can, but they rarely do with any accuracy. Because there's a hell of a lot more people who want to buy modern Burberry than vintage Burberrys. Also vintage Burberrys is considerably cheaper often to the point where a half way decent counterfeit would cost the same amount.
Sorry, but I heard somewhere that cashmere burberrys come with black tag only the lambswool one come with blue ( only exception being in Japan ) . Please clarify!
total bollocks whoever told you that pal, I was a textile designer in the 80s in Yorkshire, I did work for Burberrys and had many scarves , still do now
Does it cost more now since its a vintage?
Hi, I need your help, I want to buy a Burberry scarf, but I don’t know if vintage scarves were made by lambswool 😣
Yes, they made lambswool scarves too!
