That opening sound is to replicate a train - Stationtostation-. Been a Bowie fan from the beginning. He was truly special, otherworldly and I spent a couple of weeks in a surreal daze after his passing. But what a legacy he left for us. So glad you are taking this journey. There are just too many songs to suggest as reactions. Where do I start?. I'm going to have to think about this one!. I'm sure you'll be given plenty of great recommendations in the meantime. I ditched work at the club to see this concert...Bowie in a beautiful black suit, white dress shirt, skinny black tie, slicked back hair..Thin white .Duke indeed...heroin chic.

Bowie loved afro American musicians.
In my opinion David Bowie between 1976-1980 is his most artistic period,maybe not his most commercial and financially rewarding period,it just moves me and puts you in that era almost like travelling back in time, i was too young to have seen him live in 1978 but did get to see him live in Liverpool in the 1990s and he was amazing. RIP Starman 🙏.
Adrian Belew is a fucking guitar God!
His ambient distortion style of playing a guitar cannot be matched.
And Davids other favorite is Carlos Alomar.
Oh, and lets not forget Stevie Ray Vaughn and Peter Frampton and of course Mick Ronson.

Lol, thats Adrian Belew on lead guitar, freshly "stolen" by Bowie from Frank Zappas band when the tours crossed paths in Cologne..which led to a well known "disagreement" between the two in a German restaurant.
I saw Bowie in Memphis that year, it was a fantastic concert. Nice to see this video, it brought back memories. Nice reaction too.

Bowie, Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin are the soundtrack to my early teenage years. The Great White Duke is greatly missed by so many of us.

The first time I saw Bowie was on this tour. What a freakin' band he had: Carlos Alomar and Adrian Belew on guitars, Simon House on violin, Roger Powell on keyboards. Oh, don't forget the DAM Trio, George Murray and Dennis Davis (along with Carlos Alomar).
My girlfriend (now my wife) and me missed the last encore or so; we were busy being busted for smoking pot. LOL!
Otherwise, an amazing show.
For another good Bowie live, I would suggest Rock n Roll Suicide, either the performance from 1973 or 1990 (they’re vastly different, but equally great) or Dead Man Walking Acoustic 1997.

Ah, this was when Bowie lured Adrian Belew away from Frank Zappa's band. He's of my favourite guitar players, he does such an innovative epic couple of solo's on Talking head's "The Great Curve" which is also a favourite of mine, Brian Eno produced the album Remain in light and his influence added Fela Kuti stylings to the mix. Eno wasn't just about ambient, he loved West African music and produced some bands from the area back in the late 70's..I'm so off topic, this Bowie tune and performance was great too.
Have been a fan since the beginning Ziggy and the spider from Mars. Sad 😔 😟 day when he died. He was too young.

That beginning is intense! I was playing the song with my sister when our Dad came home. He loved all kinds of music and we would share what we liked. Listening to this he became visibly uncomfortable. When questioned, he said he was waiting for the tune and the sounds were rhythmically continuing for too long. 😹 We all started laughing when the beat dropped. Interesting...He concurred! Thank God every day for his influence. 😽💋🎶
I found your channel recently, and I love how you're deep diving into prog rock and alternative rock. I assume you're going out of your comfort zone musically, which is a great thing to see from reaction channels, as opposed to the ones that react to generic 70's/90's pop hits. Station to Station is such a great Bowie song and album, possibly the funkiest he's done in his career. If you get a chance, check out the track 'Stay' from the same album. it's so good!
Agreed. This song and album is a true masterpiece. The influences he sources and uses his special alchemy on is truly astonishing. That he doesn't remember even making the album is frustrating for us fans ... but understandable considering his habits of the time.

He was so high on coke when he recorded this album that he had almost no memories of making it. And yet, for me, it's probably his best album. LOVE this track.
I remember when he brought this tour to NYC and, after I started hearing/seeing parts of this concert, I’ve kicked myself ever since for not being there!
This performance is almost too amazing to be believed, so many great different parts orchestrated seamlessly.

Bowie poached Adrian out of Frank Zappa's band Frank discovered Adrian here in Nashville at a little club called Cantrell's where me and my friends had seen him and then took him on tour. Imagine our surprise when we see him a couple years later when he's playing guitar for David Bowie. Adrian tells a funny story about how David tried to be nice to Frank about stealing Adrian out of his band and Frank was having none of it.

Zappa was brilliant, but he could be a major dickhead. Bowie asked Belew if he'd like to collaborate, Belew said, "sure." Next thing you know, Zappa was accusing Bowie of stealing "his" guitarist (I believe he actually got in David's face about it when their paths crossed at an airport). Bowie and Belew were both too good-natured to let it turn into a public fight. They were both like, "Yeah, okay Frank, whatever," and laughed it off.
@@michaelminch5490 Adrian wound up at King Crimson, he was that good. No wonder they fought over him. Frank was very kind and generous when we briefly chatted in Boston about some German lyrics from Joe's Garage II. But geniuses can get cranky and possessive, and Zappa, Bowie and Fripp are all that.

A straight up genius. He had to metaphorically "kill" Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders, and that "starman" imagine to venture into Plastic Soul, which was more successful commercially. Mick Ronson was his better half and then he died young.
Got screwed royally both financially and professionally.
"Diamond Dogs" helped him make the transition.

Funny reaction. Thanks for that. I always wonder whether young people like you would recognice the sound of the beginning of this. Sure it is a train. That makes sense in a song called Station to Station, yeah, but the sound imitates the start of a steam locomotive which was old fashioned technique even in the time I was young. So a couple of generations later can people be familiar with it?

Glad you found the Nacho Video channel, he's got tons of amazing old Bowie video, a lot of which he's painstakingly assembled/edited/cleaned up from bootlegs and whatnot. There's a version of this song from the Isolar tour two years earlier, which was the first real concert I'd ever been to, at 14. To say it blew my mind would be an understatement; it opened with the 1929 Luis Bunuel/Salvador Dali film "Un Chien Andalou" which was both horrifying and the greatest thing I'd ever seen, until Bowie came on, that is. So cool seeing you dig this stuff, subscribed right away

This 78 Isolar II Tour was the second time I saw Bowie. The show was amazing. Look up the musicians on that tour. All top notch.

Always pushing music to a new place
At the time Bowie wrote this album, he was eating only peppers, milk, and cocaine. He was reported to weigh only 80 lbs. at one point, thus "the thin white duke." He would often stay up for three to four days at a time. His level of paranoia and disinterest in rock and being a rock star began to grow: "There will be no more rock'n'roll records or tours from me. The last thing I want to be is some useless fucking rock singer." Really odd stories about Bowie were circulating at this time Bowie living in a house full of ancient Egyptian artifacts, burning black candles, seeing bodies fall past his window, having his semen stolen by witches, receiving secret messages from the Rolling Stones, and living in morbid fear of Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, who had talked to Bowie a bit about the occult.
Despite the noise of a train in the opening, Bowie said the title of "Station to Station" did not refer to railway stations but to Stations of the Cross, the series of 14 images depicting Christ's path to his crucifixion, each symbolizing a stopping-point for prayer. It was about the Kabbalistic Tree of Life, evident in the line "from Kether to Malkuth", which bookend the Tree of Life: "so for me the whole album was symbolic and representative of the trip through the Tree of Life". The song displays a combination of Christian and Jewish allusions. The song refers to William Shakespeare's play The Tempest. Fixation with the occult was evident in such phrases as "white stains", the name of a book of poetry by Crowley. Cocaine is also referenced directly in the line: "It's not the side effects of the cocaine / I'm thinking that it must be love." A LOT going on here, more than meets the ear at first listen.
