I worked with a nurse who was born and raised in Switzerland. She said that the nurse salary is high but taxes are high and everything is expensive, including houses. She moved to California to make more money and for better work-life balance. Ratio in California is 1:5 MedSurg, 1:4 Telemetry and 1:1 ICU. Three 12 hour shifts a week(36 hours) is full time in California. In Outpatient clinic setting, it is 8 hrs a day(40 hrs per week) full time. It is difficult to buy a house in Switzerland per my Swiss co-worker. She bought a big house in California, nice cars and is now retired, she only visits Switzerland but won't live there anymore. She made her fortune in California as a nurse. She said if she stayed in Switzerland, she would still be renting and struggling.

There is no doubt that there is more money in California or the USA in general. That’s a fact 😊 , I think , they offer something different . Higher salary vs quality of life? But yes , you’re right to say, you can earn more and probably save more in Cali, my friends told me the same 👍👍👍🙂

@@BoyetVentura Quality of life is great in California, including the weather. There are many things to see and do in California. Nurses can also work at US govt hospitals like Veterans Affairs, Indian Health Affairs and State or County hospitals with annual/sick/maternity/paternity leave benefits and govt pension, SS and TSP or 401K retirement account. US has a population of 340M people. There are just more job opportunities in US in private and public govt facilities, inpatient and outpatient settings, health informatics, research, utilization review, nurse advice line, etc. Every nurse's goal should be to work, save/invest in order to retire early debt-free. Paid off house my house in 15 years and 2 cars in 4 years many years ago . I was a CNA, LVN for a short time, then retired as an RN at 38 due to simple living, saving 50% of my pay, and wise investing. Been fully retired in Southern California for 17 years. It is hard or almost impossible to retire early in Europe, Canada or Australia due to low pay, expensive cost of living ang high taxes. Nurses can save/invest more in US. Huwag lang maluho at kung anu-ano ang binibili na hindi naman kailangan. If a nurse wants to be middle class forever then working in Europe is fine. If a nurse wants to retire in the upper middle class or get wealthy, US is the place to be.

@@paengguin9381 I’m so happy for you, and I agree in all the saving/investment/retire. But everyone has a different approach to life and work and living in general. ❤️ I guess whatever works for them and as long as people or nurses are happy with their choices in life, then cars, big houses , money in tge bank wouldn’t really matter if one is living a life they wanted and contented with.❤️ but for sure USA is the best choice to make money and retire early. 👍 thanks for sharing the tips. If you are living a happy life in the USA and made a lot of money then that’s really great, but if somebody is living a happy life somewhere else may it be CANADA/EUROPE/AUSTRALIA and making maybe lesser compared to the US but living a happy life as wel ( happy based on the person’s definition of happiness and success) then i guess it is just the same .you’re advices are wise and helpful .Save/invest/frugality/retire early. 👍 great one. It’s good to retire early and live off from investments 👍👍

Totally agree with Northern California, nurses are protected by unions at law especially nurse patient ratio. Double sa makikita mo sa Switzerland or more when it comes to net pay. 3 days a week lang ang duty so pwd ka mag 8 days off kng gusto mo ipagdikit ang off mo. Maganda talaga work life balance sa California at may 1.5 hours na mandatory break pa yan every 12 hour shift.

@@nilstar6443 100% correct! California has the strongest nurses' union in the US. Plenty of family time. Some nurses work more to earn more to support their family here and in their home country but most are content with just one full time job.

What are the steps for a US citizen nurse or nurse practitioner take to be able to work in Switzerland. I am planning to move there. Thank you. I was born in the Philippines, but grew up here in the US and has been working as a Registered Nurse turned Nurse Practitioner for many years. I fell in love with Switzerland. I love their work-life balance.
