Blows my mind so hard that he can just react and go "this 3 frame window doesn't have enough combo potential, lets go for the 1 frame window" almost as as much as the fact he actually hit it too
He actually has the whole micro sequence in active muscle memory there even though it only works when both players are at very low percent. It's way too fast to raw react, there is a great amount of diligence in the training regiment to be able to have that level of confidence. He very likely isn't thinking about frame windows but, rather that he already has a plan for when both players are low percent in this match-up, and is ready to pull out every possible power move for the situation, regardless of how much training he needs to pull them off.
Wow, I've been out of the melee scene for quite some time, and seeing the incredible editing in this production goes to show just how far everything has come. This is really amazing stuff man, really excited to see more.
So much to say about this video. First I think it's so great hearing such in depth commentary for melee in general because you don't always get play by play commentary during matches let alone at half this level of knowledge (not knocking commentators because the game is so fast and before you can explain most things 10 other things already happened). Also Amsa's option select in the situation just shows how truly insane his level of play is. In a game this fast, he has the awareness in a very short window to both pick the optimal option when what will and won't work is already just separated by one or two frames, but then also executes it perfectly. He has more neurons firing in his brain in one second of gameplay than me watching an entire match trying to follow everything he's doing. And then you have that guest come in to give some extra analysis and ask that we check them out too (and I'm thinking yeah sure who is this?) and it's the amazing Melee Moments who I subbed a few weeks ago after seeing just one immaculate video of theirs. That channel deserves all the extra attention it can get and just like this one really elevates the whole community with amazingly nuanced analysis that efficiently breaks down gameplay that further enhances our enjoyment of the game as well as gives a gateway for newer players to more advanced concepts. It's all done so well that it can be understood and enjoyed by any level of player/viewer.
There is just one aspect that people don't know about. The input queue. This aspect interract extremely well at times with Yoshi, thankfully. Because it is extremely specific to certain move inputs OR jump. The crucial part was that aMSa knew it would work here, thus. But it is a bit more repeatable than what it seems like due to timing the inputs well. Taking nothing away from amsa ofcourse! But once more, Yoshi is better than people think!
When I clicked, I thought it was going to be a breakdown of that last parry on Mang0 that lead to the jab reset up air string, but MAN, I loved everymoment of this video. I'm a relatively new melee fan, and I am absolutely enamored with this kind of vid. especially when its about aMSa lol.
I was wondering why this topic seemed so familiar, I had seen the Melee Moments video about it. Really cool to give it some context within the rest of the match though and some further breakdown, good stuff Walt!
Incredible to see the yoshi break down of amsa's incredible run and execution. Definitely a wake up call for the melee community that the game isn't just about knowing top tier matchups, especially with a character as wonky as yoshi. You can see it in commentators watching amsa that are at a loss of words over most of the yoshi tech that amsa has mastered: melee always has more under its skin
Bro your editing has only continued to improve when I thought you had already reached the top two years ago. Love your content, hoping you get a juicy sponsor this year
This video is so well produced! I love the editing! Are you doing all this by yourself? Edit: just seen in description Kao is editing, still you guys are on fire, great work
i remember when the first melee moment video was posted to twitter and amsa explicitly said he didn't know uptilt was a just frame in that scenario in the replies
The moment that truly defined the big house 10 was the last 10 seconds of grand finals. On fd in the last stocks. Amsa paries the firefox and starts a combo and wins. If amsa has not paried it fire fox would have put the yoshi % too high and combod into fox upair and mango resets.
Would have been cooler if the music from the original Melee Moments vid was added during his section, woulda had a "new challenger incoming" feel imo, feels empty without it. If it's about copyright then it's cool 🤙
You specifically mentioned his depth of knowledge but aMSa said in Twitter that he didn't know it was 1 frame lol Obviously he knows a ton, as shown in the other clips. I just thought it was funny.
To put it very succinctly, since Yoshi's armour 'ignores' anything below 120 kb, you can tank most moves at low-mid % and keep DJing, or counterhit. That's the first stage. When a move just barely breaks armour (say 125 knockback), Yoshi takes so little knockback (5 here) that for a short while he can still counterhit almost immediately. Past a certain point, he starts taking more kb and won't be able to counterhit, and is at risk of another move comboing. Defensive options are usually better here (sdi, fastfall, airdodge, ...). Anything beyond 200kb sends Yoshi into tumble, counterhitting is 100 % impossible, Yoshi is sweating. Those are the four stages that apply to most moves. Some set kb moves never break armour so you're stuck in stage 1. Others break armour at 0% so go straight to stage 2. That's the general dynamic, and why I call it 'the four stages of Yoshi armour'. It's also why knowing the % where armour reaches different thresholds is important as or vs Yoshi. % matter perhaps more so than in most matchups, even at high-level where punish game is so strong that % isn't as big a deal in a way.
thanks for the s/o walt! :) loved the analysis and visuals. the section on the drill interaction with yoshi's DJ armor was especially great!
Appreciate you letting me use your short in this! Looking forward to a more formal collab soon!
TDFW found Melee Moments, I see.
Love that fucking channel so much, it deserves to pop off
3:37 Editing in Yoshi doing egg lay was a pretty sick edit. Also the having that same Yoshi fading away as the actual match continues was really cool.
Amazing commentary from Drake&Josh Official UA-cam Channel
thanks

That was a phenomenal breakdown, you're easily one of the greatest Smash creators ever
Thank you so much!
i was feeling a little weird about this video until i saw you specifically added melee moments guy. Great video
the fact both Melee moments and Turndownforwalt made a in-depth analysis of this game just shows how perfect the gameplay actually was
good Melee Moments cameo! was a little bummed when i saw the title at first because of their video, but it's good to know it's with blessing!
BRO MELEE MOMENTS GOATED. What a cool Collab
Just like the melee community to be the best supporter of the melee community. We love to see it
@@0000-r2b Melee is so sick. Started watching during 2015 and haven't looked back. Game is hard to play but watching from UA-cam is so awesome
I've played it for 20 years and still suck...just so much. It's all fun though. Give it a chance. It'll make pro stuff seem even cooler imo
This took already high quality analysis and raised it even further. The editing at 3:41 is so cool and feels like legit sports
We stan aMSa, single handedly moving his main all over the tier lists
This was an excellent breakdown of so many things in Melee! Editing was great as well!
Your editing is so good and really adds value to your breakdowns of these moments
Definitely a good idea to keep pushing this type of content, these videos blow up in the algorithm it seems

Love this format walt. Thank you for your content as always. I love in depth analysis like this
This is by far the most informative and important melee channel. Thank you for all your hard work.

Your frame data videos are always amazing. Like most Melee people, I have no idea how Yoshi works. This was great.
hey so uhhhhhhh this is the best fucking melee analysis I've ever seen. please keep doing this, it was AWESOME.
Real excited for melee moments to show off their knowledge. Their one frame link video was a great thing to find in my home page

Crazy effort and edits
I feel like knowing that uptilt was the best option was more impressive than hitting the one frame window.
great vid! i barely have an entry-level understanding of this game so these vids are super interesting
