  • Let's paint a relaxing lake at sunset! I am trying out the Camlin Koyuko (Camel Watercolors) from India. I have been asked about them a lot over the years and finally saw them to purchase on Amazon. amzn.to/3ibn3pn They are really affordable and perform well.

    I enjoy watching you create a painting. It is so sweet to see such joy in painting. I see how often people forget that painting can be a joyous activity. Why bother doing something you dread or find it creates anxiety? I went to check out these paints not because I need more paint or that I am unhappy with my current palette choices, I was interested in the price and permanence of these paints. I did not see any real ratings or Blue wool testing. Now for $14.00 for 24 tubes of paint you cannot expect that they will be professional grade but this speaks to your attitude of carefree attitude of wasting expensive paint. I truly believe that good professional paint is not so expensive that you must avoid it to practice your paintings. I am glad to see you speak to everyone's budget and what I find acceptable others might not. I almost purchased the Art Whale tubes but as you spoke of price rising after your review it did happen to those paints! Thanks for continuing to produce such wonderful videos and follow along examples for artists of every level! Please take care and enjoy your evening!

    Who would’ve thought such cheap paints would react so well? And such a pretty landscape! Though I have to admit I was tempted to holler stop when it was just a stormy sky and it’s reflection - it was so pretty just as a sky study too!

    Watching you paint watercolors is so nostalgic for me. And I have to say, watching you is a big part of why I got so into watercolor painting myself.
    I have paints that remind me of these. My mom got them for me from Amazon a few years ago. They're called Craft's 4 All. They absolutely reek. But the colors and quality are really surprising. No clue about pigments or light-fastness though. I use them more for stuff I'm going to scan and digitally reproduce.

    They paint up lovely, are they chalky at all? Have seen these here in NZ under $20 so thought they were kids paints (nice paint sets are over $50) himmm might need to get me one after seeing this. Thanks for trying them and you’ve painted a lovely picture with them, very vibrant colours don’t look washed out at all.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 роки тому

      Not at all, they don't even crack dried out in pans! Very transparent. There is a strong smell when you squeese them out so I recommend filling your palette and setting it out to dry somewhere you won't be bothered by it because they don't seem to smell much when you rewet them. It is a plastic like chemical smell that some cheaper watercolors have. That's the only downside to these paints and there is not pigment info.

    How do you like the folding plastic palette? I’m thinking of getting one for my watercolours but I’m worried that once dried the watercolours might fall out of the wells when I close the palate. Has that ever happened to you? I use Daniel smith and I don’t want to inadvertently ruin those expensive paints! Love all your videos too. Thanks for the great lessons!

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  3 роки тому +1

      Personally I don't love this style of palettes but you Daniel smith should be fine as it disnt crack. I can get these for $2 tho so they are handy for temporary palettes (for reviews where I give away the paint after) however if you can find a folding palette with the wella all on one side ot would be great. I had a pro art one that had more wells on one side than the other and I liked it a lot.

    This could be useful info, from Wetcanvas, www.wetcanvas.com/forums/topic/camlin-watercolours-artists-grade/
    I've been looking into these paints for a long time. In Europe they are even more difficult to get. And yes, it's out of curiousity. Watercolourhoarder. And yes, I make the reflection: these paints should not become more expensive fore those who need them, instead for us who can afford to buy different brands of other paints. But I saw many Indian painters use them and make beautiful work with them, that's why I wanted to look deeper into them.
    Who knows... their naples yellow is still naples yellow PY41 (as I bought some from a small UK company, last week)
    I quote this from Wetcanvas from a person called Idraneel:
    "The Camel ARTIST colors are mostly excellent. Many many famous Indian artists have used them for decades. The earth colors are definitely very good, better than Cheap Joes American Journey. I do not have any self tested information about lightfastness yet (and I have yet to register for the testing underway here). They rewet very well and there is no mold when colors are squeezed out (except for the ivory black). The pigment load is generally high, although getting strong blacks might sometimes be a problem. I have found them better than cotman (pans/tubes) or Sakura koi pans. At about $1 or less per 20ml, it provides the most bang by a huge margin.
    Here is what I’ve used so far. My guess about pigments in parenthesis.
    camlin customer service: 02266557007
    =====key====
    Series (1,2)
    Lightfast (A,B,C)
    Transparent (T,D,O)
    Staining (I,L,N)
    =======
    2BD lemon yellow (PY175?)
    2BD permanent yellow deep (PY110?)
    1AD raw sienna (transparent)/1AD yellow ochre
    2BD permanent orange (PO62?) (less bright than cadmium orange)
    1AD burnt Umber (reddish brown)
    1AO burnt Sienna (beautiful orange red, excellent granulation)
    1AO light red (semitransparent, excellent granulation)
    2BD vermilion hue (PR209?) (excellent mixer with reds and blues)
    2BT rose madder hue (PV19 Rose?)(mixes deep purple) /2BD carmine (PV19 Violet?) (mixes very deep purple) (neither stains much)
    2BT ultramarine (pigment load not enough for rich darks, unless with light red)
    2BDI cobalt blue hue (ultramarine light?, pigment load not enough)
    2BOI cerulean blue hue (mildly granulating, moderately strong, mixes bright greens)
    1BT Indian yellow (PO49?)
    1AO Indian red (not too purple, granulating)
    1AO raw umber (yellowish/greenish brown, gooey in the tube)
    1AO ivory black (add honey to stop mold)
    1AO Chinese white (not opaque)
    2BT crimson lake (PR122?) (mixes light purple, difficult to get exact shade)
    2BO scarlet lake (PR188?) (very intense orange red, ok mixer, staining)
    1BDL Terre Verte (ok, not great, staining)
    2BD viridian hue
    2BD sap green
    Sap green and viridian hue are minimally staining (no granulation)
    1BOI Prussian blue (staining)
    2C magenta (PV23/PV37? heavily staining, avoid)
    2C purple (avoid)
    2C mauve (avoid)
    2C violet (avoid)
    ==================
    The top 12+4 are on my palette. I don’t like staining colors.
    ultramarine mixes great with light red for blacks and silvery grays, and with burnt sienna and Indian red for grays. Viridian mixes great with rose madder hue/carmine/crimson lake for blacks. Raw sienna changes color based on dilution, unlike yellow ochre. IIRC, gamboge hue is a tad more orange than permanent yellow deep.
    Cons: No real red or bright orange in the series. No strong cerulean or turquoise. UMB strength sometimes does not seem enough. No usable violet/purple shade in tube. Probably no one has really tested the lightfastness.
    Camlin refused to divulge color index names: “This is to inform you with regret that we can’t disclose the pigment no as it is not allowed in the company policy.” :eek:
    I have no experience with Daler Rowney or WN. Ironically, Camlin is the WN partner in India. Camlin is now Kokuyo Camlin, also known as Camellia in the US.
    Other than Himalaya fine art (mentioned above, and they have excellent customer service), there’s also creativehands.in/%5B/URL%5D who are commercial importers with a retail outlet (also with good customer service).
    PS: Just a reminder, stay away from anything camlin/camel student grade, it’s worse than trash.
    PS: Get good paper. If you’re near Kolkata, you can get 100% cotton, acid free, handmade, internal and external gelatin sized paper at Rs 40/sheet from G C Laha (Very likely India’s oldest art store at 108 years old). I hear great paper is also made in Pune."
    Kind regards,
    Heidi
