Sudan Archives: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

In light of current events, NPR is postponing new live tapings of Tiny Desk Concerts. In the meantime, check out Tiny Desk (home) concerts! They’re recorded by the artists in their home. It’s the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
June 22, 2020 | Bob Boilen -- Sudan Archives is a truly singular artist, inspired by Irish and African music, especially Sudanese music. The first time I saw her was in a crowd of people at Cheer Up Charlies during SXSW in March of 2018. The show was wild and wonderful: effects pedals transformed her violin into a full-on band, with electronic beats keeping it all moving.
Almost exactly two years later, things couldn't be more different. On March 6, SXSW 2020 was canceled due to COVID-19. By the time Sudan Archives arrived at NPR in Washington, D.C., on March 11, everyone was concerned about the coronavirus threat. So we sanitized the desk, the mics and the cameras. We also kept our distance.
She came not with an array of electronics, but with violinist Jessica McJunkins, violist Dominic Johnson and cellist Khari Joyner. The new arrangement at the top of "Confessions" was the perfect tension queller. And those arrangements also heighten the lyrics. Listening again three months later, three weeks into police brutality protests, the words - "There is a place that I call home / But it's not where I am welcome / And if I saw all the angels / Why is my presence so painful?" - take on new meaning.
When the show was over and the small, socially-distant crowd of NPR employees dispersed, our crew began to wipe everything down with disinfectant wipes. Our incredible audio engineer, Josh Rogosin, started to set up for what we thought would be the next Tiny Desk show, the Pulitzer Prize-winning opera p r i s m by Ellen Reid and Roxie Perkins.
Josh Rogosin remembers the day clearly. "After the Sudan Archives concert, I optimistically went about setting up for a string quartet plus an eight-person choir and two vocal soloists, plus harp and conductor," he told me. "About halfway through my set-up, our boss gathered us around the Tiny Desk and made the painful but obvious decision. No more Tiny Desks until further notice."
Three months later, things are not looking much better. I miss it madly. There will be Tiny Desk concerts again and the celebration will be joyous. We'll do it as soon as it feels safe. Stay tuned and enjoy the nearly 1,000 concerts in our archives.

@@MissMichele1993 no not dubbed. The mics they use are very sensitive and a bit of compression could take care of her moving away from the mic from time to time.

I’m from Sudan and this sounds so alike how our violinists sound! I’m amazed to see it used like this in a modern context. If anyone is interested they should definitely check out our old musicians.
@Veronica Karn I would definitely start with Mohammed Wardi, he’s the most famous. I also really like Al Balabil (they were like the Sudanese Supremes) and Abu Obaida Hassan.
She is such a unique artist. I’ve never heard music like this before, it had a literal physical effect. Kind of calming, kind of grounding, kind of theatrical. Completely unique and amazingly talented. She has her place in history, I can feel it.

some of her music is inspired by Sudanese violinist Asim Gorashi and she also named herself Sudan Archives because of her love for Sudanese fiddlers
okay that's super cool but can you tell me where she said this? because i initially thought she got her music mostly from Irish fiddling. also again super cool info, no intention of shade, sounds like a new artist i can look into :D
@@elianahadassah1197I just saw her on Austin City Limits. She said she wanted to feature the violin in all of its forms - classical; country; rock; ethnic - like Irish and African fiddlers. I thought she said she was self taught too. She’s impressive.

she is amazing her vocals are getting stronger her violin skills are improving as well. You can hear the progression from her older performances until. Her voice is pretty and getting polished now.

Those musicians backed her well! They were so serious! That change @1:13 was beautiful and we all Love Non't For Sale. I enjoyed the high and low notes... brought my Afrikan roots out. This really sinks in after watching it a few times.

Yeah... tht’s wht strings can do for you. You should try listening Dvorak’s Silent Woods. There’s one note near the end I consider the epitome of string-induced emotion.

If you havent heard "Water" from Sudan Archives it's a gem. Her percussion work on her albums is incredible too.
One of the first songs I heard from her a few years back. Queen Kunta was the first a believe. Both songs had such beautiful and powerful energy!
Comfortable in the skin she's in and used every part of her being ( including her chokers ) to communicate that TRUTH!!!😁😁😁😁😁

She is so beautiful and I was entranced by her voice and her new style compared to when she first came out. I was already intrigued but now I'm a stan.... i like when artists are just free and not afraid to grow and change. Her violin skills and vocals have improved alot. I love Iceland Moss, Glorious and Confessions. She knows how to write bops ughhhh so good.
I'm just now discovering her music...she is so freaking amazingly talented and beautiful! I am absolutely obsessed with her now. We definitely need more music like this nowadays.

Tiny Desk is the reason I have found numerous musical artists that have healed my soul in troubled times. Even now, as I cry tears from a recent soul moving upset, I searched here for music to soothe me. Tiny Desk is a life savor for those like me, are music addicts, and this is my drug of choice in the midst of deep sadness. A year ago, My friend invited to BRIC celebrates Brooklyn. We heard her and instantly fell into her trance...the little messages in her sound, layers of beautiful melodies and lyrics was so refreshing. Her growth after that year has been amazing to watch. I’m pretty sure it is, it just takes time. The thing that feels hardest on day 1 can feel totally natural by day 100. It’s all GOOD practice and the brilliance of muscle memory.

Wish I was a fly on the wall, while she was there March 11th, I was in DC in my grandmother's lil apartment, asking God to take her pain away. She died on the 12th, but Sudan archives music is so soothing, even though you posted late, I love it, thanks NPR.

I caught her on Jools Holland. BBC doesn’t release the latest shows in the US, so that must have been taped about four years ago. I’ve been looking out for her music/videos since seeing that performance. I’m very happy to see her here. Tiny Desk is on point with the creative talent.
