Hello everyone, some viewers reminded me the safety issue. Yes, everyone does grafting needs to be very careful especially if you do the back-cut for whip grafting. Actually, I saw another video and that guy was using a flexglass disc which should be a good idea. The transparent disc has a hole in the middle which is large enough for your scionwood to go through. Basically, you have a disc between the scionwood and your fingers. Even if you miscut, you cut to the disc first, not your fingers!

I am planning to top it off with few other varieties. A friend of mine has another variety that he is willing yo share. Is it ok to do the grafting now? We live in zip - 90503 near LA ( 2 miles from beach). The tree gets around 6 hrs of morning sun. I can even move it to partial shade if needed.
Nice video, thank you. I see the fruit of the wild plants everywhere on the ground as you work. Is that where you would get seed for more root stock or do you find digging suckers easier and faster? I am watching this in preparation for doing about 10 of mine this year. I have grafted for 25 yrs, and the whip and tongue is still hard for me to do. Jujube don't lend themselves to my favorite graft types. Thanks for the demonstration.

I do love the jujube fruit, I have 2 trees, diferent varieties ,that are in very diferent places o my farm, I will try to cross graft them, to see if they have better cross polination. Another project i am working on is to try to graft Jujube in native wild species, already establiched trees, like Rhamnus alaternus or Rhamnus frangula, I hope they work, Ill tell you later. sorry my bad spelling. Sorry for the slow response since I have not monitored it for a while. In China, people did graft jujube scionwood successfully to a rootstock of different genus (Paliurus hemsleyanus). You definitely can try some native species. Good Luck!
Thanks for the excellent and clear instructions. I have grown a tree from the big seed of a large sweet jujube (green taiwan apple) fruit. Will it grow true ? The tree grows vigorously and is thorny. In a year it has grown 5 feet. Can I graft such a tree ? And with a graft from which tree ? I will be glad if you can reply. Thank you.
Most fruit tree do not grow true from seeds. But you can use them as rootstocks for grafting. The Taiwan green jujube belongs to Indian jujube, a evergreen tropical plant which is different than the regular jujube Z. jujuba. Depending on your location, it may winter killed if you are not in a tropical climate.

Using 2-3 buds is OK if you have enough scionwood or buds are too close. But you need to remove competition when they start to grow. You may just keep 1 or 2 shoots at most.
@@juliegreen2630 Did you resolve whether to harvest the dormant scion woods or while active? From the look of a styrofoam cooler box in the background of this video, I presume the scion woods were harvested earlier and kept in fridge.

Sorry for the late response. I have no tried with different rootstocks except Z. spinosa. I remember in China that another related species could be used as rootstock in subtropical areas. I guess it is possible. You try it and let us know the results!
If your planning on using these techniques please be careful not to cut the finger supporting the scionwood. I cringed every time she sliced downward on the scionwood, but obviously Dr. Yao has been doing this awhile.
I skew my graft, so at least a small portion is making contact. I am the first to admit, that my grafts are the ugliest and sloppiest looking, but they do take well.
I graft at the first sign of the buds bursting. And as crazy as this might sound, I graft early Spring during full moons, which tends to fall on rainy weather.

Normally you do the grafting when they start to leaf out which means early spring and the time depends on location.
We are in northern New Mexico. normally I graft them in May and we can dig the grafted plants the next spring.
Why so late? Graft may and see result in late spring. Is it depends on the weather hot heat takes longer?
Because the jujube trees leaf out in May in northern NM.

You cannot get one big and sweet through grafting those two together. You might get one through cross breeding.

Adding ash will making your soil more akaline. Try something more acidic.
What's the reason you need to expose some of the scion cut? At 1:47
Because it heals better than letting the scionwood bark toughing the rootstock.

Not really necessary. If you cover up with grafting tape from the base of the cut to the top, it should be able to prevent it from dried up.

Usually 2.5 months, depends on the weather. Hot heat takes even longer.

Stratification is not necessary but you do need to soak them for 2-3 days before planting to make sure the real seeds are soaked.

We tried to graft buds or patch if bud on wild jujube but its failing, is it successful or not?
It is not easy to do budding on jujube plant since it naturally has second branches near the buds.

Yes. Harvest the scionwood before they leaf out and wax them, store them in fridge until you need them.

Citrus and avocado do not work as jujube rootstocks.

Since we do not have nationwide cultivar trials, I know the situation in the Southwest better, not much about the east coast.

The rootstock plants do have thorns! You can clean them with your prunner before grafting.

Before they leaf out, when they are still dormant. Here they leaf out in mid or late April, I usually collect the scionwood in late March.
